Description

Good grief this fire . It started Saturday early morning, and it's been completely out of control since. It's currently at 20,000 acres and is 0% contained, up from 14,000 acres this morning. There are three things that are making this fire impossible: It has crown fire , it's been super windy/hot/dry, and over the last few years we've had a huge bark beetle infestation, resulting in many thousands of trees standing dead. In essence, the forest is kindling just begging for a spark.

I tried to drive close enough to see the flames directly, but the smoke was far too thick to see beyond 50 feet, and the roads leading to it have been closed. (This was probably a smart decision, considering the startlingly heavy traffic leading that way.)

This is the first time I've been genuinely scared by a wildfire; none have come this close before.

TL;DR THIS FIRE IS HUGE AND CLOSE AND SCARY

I live by where this happened. The smoke stank, and the loss of land was really tragic, but the sunsets and sunrises were oddly beautiful through the smoke.
This is a great capture.

It's odd to know that it's a fire but still think the colours are beautiful....
Nice shot!

Just wow, such an amazing shot!
Although I'm pretty sure at the moment this fire was quite unnerving, being so close.

Thanks Yeah, the fire was waaaaay too close for any kind of comfort. I've been to the area since and the destruction just makes me sad.

i'm in longmont, and it's terrible. They say it's 45% contained now, but they think it will still burn for another couple months. Ah, I can't stop thinking of those people who lost their homes. :/

It's a miserable situation.

Lemme tell ya though, living in Ft. Collins has been awful the last week; the smoke has been chokingly thick sometimes. Fortunately I just moved to Denver, so I can actually breathe, but I really feel bad for anyone in all that smoke that has asthma or other breathing problems. What a mess.

Latest update on the fire has it at 37,000 acres. It is so hard watching this fire grow... The smoke is making it to Longmont.

Yeah, when I smelled the smoke here in Longmont, I thought it was someone having a bonfire... Then I saw the news :[

It's at 41,000 now. Sigh. In better news, it sounds like firefighters have begun successful containment of the SW corner of the fire.
