Latest design. It indeed is a cow stable. This might come quite surprising for most of you, but yes architects also do build cow stables, and it really was an interesting design as well. Not to mention what I learned about the ways cows are held nowadays, which really can be disturbing, though, of course, exceptions prove the rule. Luckily.

Looks like it is based on a traditional timber framing design, although in those the lower beams in the central part usually would have extended to the walls. I like the massive trunks used as posts in the outer rows. And I love the use of wood (if it is from sustainable forestry). It just gives the interior a much warmer atmosphere, although I agree that there is not much warmth left in most of todays dairy farming.

It is not directly based on timber framing, but I guess you can see resemblence there, of course Basically this construction is developed out of the constructions that could be found in neighbouring buildings (to a small part at least). Most of it was developed in reaction to those massive trunks you like I wanted to have a distinction between this outer structure and the inner, very light structure. This is why there is no connection. Since the roof sits slightly assymetrical on top due to the terrain, this filigrane structure resolves out of reacting to this. I spent quite much developing work into this, so I guess it has some elements from different ways of wood construction I chose to have those trunks for two reasons: the more important reason being so the cows could use them to rub themselves against them (they can exit the stable on one side through them), and the second reason is the very clear resemblence they produce to a columnar hall, which for me evokes a feeling of importance for what's inside, showing visitors, that these animals deserve having a good life and being cared for instead of being exploited for their products. The wood of course is meant to be taken from the farmer's own woods

That makes a lot of sense, all of it. I love to also know why certain decisions were made by an artist the way they were made - especially in something that invloves construction, and tries to combine certain needs specified by a customer with the wish to create something special and unique.

I would be a happy cow in this stable

Decisions I make about my projects are always driven by a kind of "usefulness". I wouldn't add things purely for aesthetical reasons, rather than reasons that complement both an aesthetical value and a certain function

That's great!
