This is a sketch request I did for BlueHecate of her character Fanny. I'm not really used to drawing humans but challenges are always nice. She wanted me to draw her with a brainy smurf plush and since I didn't know her real age I decided to do a portrait of her as a child. I put more detail in then I normally do in these kind of requests, but since she had to wait quite some while I wanted to offer her more than I usually do.

Hello, I'm from ProjectComment

I have to say the wait looks worth it though, seeing as you've done a marvelous job on this character right here. Looking at the source material and your drawing, I have to say this had to be quite a treat. It's almost as if the character jumped out from the cartoon world, and landed right smack dab into the real one. I'm not sure how old the character is supposed to be, but none the less I like how human you've made her. She had a very child like body shape, and she seems to be well proportioned as so. Nothing is out of whack and I like how her face has that puffiness that children tend to sometime have. Your pencil work here looks very well done and I like how it came out. Almost like a storybook drawing of the sorts. The eyes or glasses look well done too. I like how you've handled them, and they don't seem out of place even though they're a pivotal part of the character. The smurf character while small and unnoticeable at first, looks like how they should be, a smurf.

The pencil work on this looks simply amazing. Even though you've not drawn people before, you certainly do a very good job in not giving that impression lol. Her body (human proportions) look decent, but giving her a look, it appears her legs are a bit short compared to her body. Normally legs make up the body the most. Try looking at refs or anatomy charts of how the body proportions should be. You're very close, very, and it's not noticeable that much, but given time people can see how out of place it looks. I've almost glanced it over, believing it's her shirt that's very long until noticing you've put her waist a little bit too low, and her body seems to be very elongated. The ears should end where the eyebrows begin in height, as they're a bit too low. Overall things look good on this.

You've done a marvelous job on this drawing and I do like it. While there's not that much shading on it, the overall line work you've put into this character is amazing. I like the face and the expression you've given her. I like the fact that the shirt isn't flat, you've added in details that show the curves, bents and folds within the shirt and skirt, and make them look natural over the character where they should be. The shading around the cheeks make them look as if the child has rosy red cheeks.

Well done and keep up the good work. You've certainly done a good job. Hopefully there's more human drawings coming in the near future.

Thank you very much for your comment And I'm deeply sorry for my late reply, but I was doing my master thesis and literally had no time at all for anything else besides that
You definitely are right about your anatomical remarks! Once somebody tells you it always springs to your eyes right away So, great you showed me my mistakes on that, now I can improve them next time! And indeed, I really should do more human characters It is always good to challenge yourself on something new, glad you enjoyed it!!

You're Welcome, it's no problem- school first.

I sure did. Wish you the best on your future endeavors, as well as your future challenging drawings. I'd imagine they'll be just as great, if not better.

Hi, I'm from

For not being used to drawing humans, this is absolutely amazing! The general anotomy is almost spot on, and it truly feels like this is a child. The texture of the hair and clothing is super nice to look at too, and the shading is super nice!
There's something you gotta watch out for when drawing faces and stuff though; children's faces are very soft and are often supposed to look innocent; placing too much shadow in places might ruin that whole ordeal. Even though faces do have a lot of shades to them, it is also something we constantly look at; this makes small errors in shadows and such much more prominent; my point is, I might have considered toning down some of it on the child's face. There's also something about the feet that seems a little off, as you've shaded the rest of the clothing and body with such a nice flow while they seem to be lacking that same feeling of form. Studying both faces and feet might come it handy! Speaking of hands - the area where the hand meets the doll is a little unclear - like I can't place what's part of the doll and what's not.

But at the same time as I'm suggesting being more careful with shadow, I also really encourage doing more of it! I know that is super counter intuitive, but having a few places with much more darkness that others can really make the piece pop!

I'm sorry this got super criticizing, I hope it wasn't too heavy to read   I'm truly in awe of how you manage to capture the human figure, and the form of the sweater and hair are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Never give up, and good luck!

Thank you very much for taking the time writing this critique!! It's perfectly fine that you voiced all those points, that helps me a lot after all!!! So no worries about mentioning all those points. Actually I never really thought about being more tender in shadows on a child's face. I always would render those out the same way I would do on grown-ups. But reading your recommandation makes perfectly sense! So, I gotta keep it in mind And yeah, hands and feet... Nothing to add on that. Feet are somewhat okay for me to do, but hands... no thank you So no wonder you stumbled upon that! I don't do humans that often, so even if it's just a small squetch, it's great to get in detail feedback on that, too! So thanks again!!

What a wonderful take on her character! Your line work is beautifully done. I feel like I could touch the striped fabric of her shirt and it would move as fabric would.

Keep up the awesome work!
