Description So I banged this sketch of Ratigan out in under a minuet--speed drawing, you know I love it!

It took me much longer to clean it up, 'line it and color though. Anyways, I was surprised that he came out so well for my first time drawing him. And I actually like the colors I used!

I'll definitely do more Ratigan later. Enjoy!

Ratigan is from the movie The Great Mouse Detective © Disney's Basil of Baker Street © Eve Titus

That's kinda...sad that you have such a phobia. So no owning your very own mini version of Ratigan. Now I'm a tiny bit sad that I can't have one nowadays--it would end up in a kitty's tummy (strange though if the cat's name was Felicia).

I also wanted a ring tone of Mark Hamill's Joker laugh. I just find it amusing to have and all the disturbing looks I get would just be a bonus!

I was able to get one at one time, but a few weeks later this stray kitten came around my birthday, so no rat for me. T.T
We started with one kitten and wound up with 4.

XDDD I'd love to see people looking around trying to find that thing

Aww, poor rat. Yup, cats multiply like crazy. My current cat is an Egyptian Smokey Mau--so pretty!

It would be so fun to see people going crazy over finding random, creepy laughter XD! Imagine the fun to be had if you set up a couple of them and set them off at different times XD! I think I'm going to have to try it!

oh I love those cats! i've only seen them on cats 101 but they were a pretty breed
I got a Bombay and now 3 tuxedo mix kittens... they look like little mice.... can that count?

You gotta tell me how that turns out! |DDDD

Cats 101 was where I saw them too. I didn't know what kind of breed my cat was but then I saw that show and I was all, "So he's not a fluke of nature?"

Yours sound so cute, looking like mice would count I'd say.

I will let you know what happens when I do get a chance to do it XD!

Very nice work for your first time! That's a really good pose of him looking like 'hmph!' as he puffs away on his cigarette. Good job, looking forward to seeing more!

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-08 15:37:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I don't know why but I like his poses while he's smoking.

I want to draw him enough where I feel comfortable and able to draw him without a reference. Since I think drawing Basil was easy it only took me drawing him a few times (maybe 3 or 4) to get him down pat.

Ratigan though has such an odd shape for his head that it makes him tricky to draw! So I anticipate doing a great many of Ratigan before I'm able to draw without ref.

I tried to tell another GMD fan that there is nothing wrong with using reference pictures when she made it sound like it was a horrible thing. It's not at all, in fact, the Disney artists used reference pictures to animate the scenes. That's what is known as model sheets. It's also fine not having to use a reference when you get used to the character enough, but you shouldn't let anyone tell you it's a bad thing. You're learning about the character and that's great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-09 00:04:44 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's true. And they use maquettes too. They really have to use the modeling sheets since there are so many people that work on one movie and everyone's drawing style is different. It would be too distracting if the style the characters are drawn kept changing every few seconds.

The reason I'd like to be able to do characters without reference is just for the times that I'm unable to have them. It happens to me often that I get a great idea to draw out but I'm not at home with all my ref. stuff so I end up doodling it fast in my little sketch book (I sometimes can't even tell what it actually is unless I write it out).

I knew someone that liked to learn drawing a character by tracing the character out on paper and then proceeding to break that character down until it looked like the steps to a how-to-draw book. I think tracing the initial drawing just helped build her confidence and show her that it wasn't as hard as she made it out to be.

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-09 02:00:39 +0000 UTC]

Maquettes! That's the word I was looking for. Yes, the sculptures of the characters are created for a three-dimensional view for the artists. Yes! I couldn't think of the word, but I knew it started with an 'M'! Thank you!

Oh, I totally get that when being out and there's nothing to reference. I asked for a sketch of Basil from Ruben Procopio, an animator from GMD, and he was sitting at a table in the Autograph Area of the San Diego Comic Con. He had no pictures to look at, even the History of Art Japanese pin (with Basil and Olivia) I gave him as a gift didn't seem to help. He sat there and drew a quick sketch of Basil in five minutes flat. It came out absolutely beautiful! Of course Ruben has been with Disney for over thirty years, but that's a good example of how someone can draw without any reference pictures! I sort of can do it, but I don't like the results.

That's an interesting and good way too! Breaking it down and practicing on pieces, that's excellent! See, I used to trace back in the late 80's early 90's, things like horses because they were tough. As I got more comfortable, I moved on to my own until I gave up tracing entirely. But, for example, if you were to keep drawing Basil's deerstalker in all sorts of angles, eventually you'll get comfortable and it will become easy whenever drawing it.

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-09 03:50:53 +0000 UTC]

Yup, yup. That's me, ever helpful--even when you don't want me to be! And I see now that they some times do 3D animated Maquettes! For only the 3D movies though.

Wow, that's so awesome that you got Ruben Procopio to do Basil! What year was that? Since he's worked there that long I wonder if some of the time he forgets how certain characters look? I know I would.

Everyone has done tracing what with light boxes and all. I even did some around the same time as you. My attempts though were never any good--I didn't have a steady hand and I kept moving the paper. I mostly used it for practice (never tried to say that I didn't trace it) but I got some flak for it all the same--which actually helped me get out of that and just do them on my own.

Tracing is such a basic drawing essential that its fun to come up with new ways to use it. I like to do a character on regular paper then tracing paper on top and add an outfit to see if I like that one. If not I just do another and I can save it to try on other characters.

Oh, this was last year's Comic Con with meeting Ruben. He's real good friends with a married couple my sister and I have known for many years. They like to do cosplaying as super heroes and my sister got to participate with their group either as Catwoman or Super Girl. He did kind of forget how Basil looked and he told me that, too. This is what it looks like:

[link]

Yeah, mine was tracing horses because I used to draw a Pippi Longstocking book and of course, she has a horse. On my own, it looked hideous, so I used to check out a lot of horse books and trace them. I was bad but at least it worked for the book.

Did you know they used to sell coloring books that had tracing paper included? It was pretty helpful. I had a Barbie one, so it helped a little with learning to draw humans...as beautiful as Barbie of course!

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-09 07:19:03 +0000 UTC]

Wow, friend of the family your lucky! For somewhat forgetting Basil still turned out great! Thanks for sharing!

I tried to do comics but I never finished any. I had a short attention span at the time and got bored easily. Or I'd lose it. I used to draw horses and man they are hard. Needless to say my real life drawing skills are better at animals than people.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember those coloring books. I know I always thought "Why is this in here?" Ha, really Barbie? Maybe I had the same one...early 90's? I loved their clothing style at the time, really bright and colorful. I just colored them. It wasn't until later that I figured out they would make good references.

Oh, man these books were drawn hideously, and I do mean hideous! I wonder if I still have them or they were fit for the shredder, no, better, set them on fire!

That's right! It was like wax paper in-between in those coloring books and even then it came out horrid. I just needed loads of practice back then. I tried throwing away my old drawings, but my sister fished it all out of the trash.

Well early drawings are hardly every perfect. I have a few of mine and I shutter sometimes when I look at them. But others...I view them rather fondly and I'm glad I kept some.

I never actually tried to draw on those in-between pages since I couldn't figure out what they were for XD! Aww, your sister must have really like your drawings.

I've seen The Game's Afoot Fansite before and can I just say--Wow! Now that is dedication! Recently someone asked me about the House of Mouse episode with Basil on it and I know which it is and everything. But I was wondering if The Game's Afoot actually lists that as an appearance of Basil, Dawsen, and Ratigan.

Oh, when I got into my Phantom of the Opera days, I was breaking away from tracing by then and the pictures came out awful! Michael Crawford looked like a monkey as the Phantom. Those were the ones I tried to toss and my sister rescued them.

Thank you! I've got information and a link to one episode from House of Mouse at TGA. The photo is listed under Odds and Ends of the Miscellaneous page. I didn't know where else to put it. Here's the link:

I haven't really drawn only Phantom of the Opera--meaning that I've drawn characters as him or wearing the outfit for a costume. I have a cute doodle of Mickey Mouse as the Phantom somewhere....

Ah, good to see you didn't miss that piece of info--as I said, that's dedication! When I first saw that episode I took it as proof that Ratigan didn't actually die and thought that they might do something more with the characters.

Alas, they did not but they did release The Mystery In The Mist Edition DVD. So I though okay now they're going to do something more and I have yet to still see anything. It was sad but it was nice to see the movie so widespread again.

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-11 07:54:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that has got to be adorable! I want to see that! Mickey as the Phantom, that is. I put up the one I drew of Yakko Warner as the Phantom. Two of them actually.

No no I caught that. What I need to find out now is what other episodes of House of Mouse Basil made an appearance. I think there's at least two others. To me it's like all villains survived and are enjoying themselves at the club. If you've never seen House of Villains, you should! It's funny!

Not much in bonus features this time around for the Mystery in the Mist edition. One good thing on this DVD was seeing the original 1986 title. No one has seen that since then, so it was great! Well, I hinted to John Musker that fans do want something big for the 25th anniversary. A double disc with goodies *coughcoughaudiocommentarycoughcough* , so John said he would pass my ideas onto Ron Clements since he's more in charge with the DVD stuff. We'll see!

I'll have to put Mickey the Phantom up sometime. I remember the Warner brothers and their sister Dot! I used to love that cartoon but I never had a chance to draw them before.

They had more Basil in House of Mouse? Really, now I'm going to be obsessed with looking for him! You know I never really thought about it but you're right that all the villains that "died" are enjoying themselves at the club. I've only seen a few episodes of HoM and no, I never saw House of Villains but I so want to!

Ooo yeah, double disc with commentary and goodies! That'd be so great for a 25th anniversary! I hope, I hope, I hope they do that!!! Ha, now I have the crazy idea to do art of it! Basil and Ratigan fighting over the DVD that had all the extra goodies on it!

And the funny thing about me drawing Yakko as the Phantom was I thought of the idea way before the Animaniacs episode, "Dot's Entertainment" aired. I was literally freaking out as well as laughing hysterically.

Yeah, I'm just not sure which episodes they are. I did see one of he and Dawson (along with other mice) in one of those commercials at the end of the show, something about using Dumbo as a plane. Dawson's hat blew off during flight, too, pretty amusing. Neither of them spoke, though.

I actually have one idea to draw a collage for the cover. An imaginary cover, of course, since no one knows if a 25th edition will be released. I'm hoping so too!

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-13 07:04:12 +0000 UTC]

The Animaniacs read your mind, freaky. I know I saw every episode of that show and I really loved the characters. And I know that eventually I'll get around to drawing some but I really want to draw Slappy for some reason .

Dumbo seems to gravitate towards Basil and Dawson doesn't he XD? I love it as a running gag. I only ever caught HoM episodes here or there when they were new so I have a lot to catch up on.

Oh, a collage would be great for an imaginary cover! I wonder if some people will think its a real cover that you replicated by hand XD!

Draw her, she's a hoot! I find myself quoting lines from her every so often.

Oh, I know! That was actually a goof with Dumbo appearing in GMD because the book wasn't published until 1939 by Helen Aberson and the movie takes place in 1897. Leave it to Disney to sneak in other characters from their own films.

Well, I'd hope they'd believe I did the work! What I do is show the original sketch as well before coloring it. I have the perfect pose in mind of Basil and Ratigan for this collage, I just now have to physically draw it onto paper. I have until July 2nd of next year. But, watch, I'll wait till the last minute!

Yeah, she's on my very long list of things to draw XD!

Yes, I love when you find other Disney characters in films that they have no business being in.

I can't wait to see your collage! That's a good idea to put the sketch up too, I always like to see the before and after color. That's a lot of time to do the drawing in and I hope that you don't wait till the last minuet 'cuz then I'll be waiting forever to see it XD! But if you do, I understand 'cuz I'm like that too. Always finishing things at the last minute can be fun though. I've done it so much its ridiculous!

Well, my scanner has been dead for months, so I've been photographing my drawings. They look hideous that way, but it's the only method I can do for the time being. I'm supposed to get a new scanner from a friend, but I've yet to retrieve it. So, what I've been doing now is photographing the sketch and adding it to my Photobucket account. The colored version gets submitted here and then I add a link to show the original sketch at Photobucket. I would LOVE to have both versions submitted here like I used to do it since I'm a member of #Traditional-Disney (they only take drawn submissions, not digital).

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-14 05:34:52 +0000 UTC]

Hope that you get your new scanner some time soon 'cuz it seems that you are more comfortable with that. Will the club not accept photos of drawn art or are the pictures not clear enough to bother submitting?

You know I've never had a scanner so I've always taken pictures of my drawings and it works pretty good for me but I hate it when they come out blurry. It is a tiresome method but it does work.

Once I get it on the computer I just go straight to work on it--I don't usually add the sketch just the line art sometimes. Although I am on Fur Affinity and I do have a few sketches there but I'm thinking of taking them off.

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-14 09:29:28 +0000 UTC]

Not sure yet. The last drawing I submitted to the club was one that I was able to scan normally. I was hoping I'd have a scanner by the time I submitted all of the scanned ones so that I can scan the newer ones properly, or the ones that were photographed.

I know, I'm spoiled. I get so frustrated without having a scanner, especially when I need to scan magazine articles for the GMD fansite.

Usually, I draw the picture in full, scan it (back when I had the scanner) and keep two copies. One of the regular b&w and then the other in full color.

If you really need the scanner why not try using a stores? Like Kinko's or something?

I actually love to see the initial sketch of a drawing and then the finished piece. I keep my sketches in my drawing book and the finished one on my pc since I killed my printer a while back. I've yet to get a new one but when I do I plan to print them out.

My birthday is on the 27th and my dad was talking about getting me a laptop. I whooped and hollered since I've been dying to get one, but then the realization struck about not having a scanner for the longest time. With bills and credit card payments, I can't afford to buy one right now.

The printer still works, thank goodness, but the only paper I have is that high quality photo paper. I need to go out and buy plain white paper before I can make more drawings. A drawing book, I don't have one of those!

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-16 04:13:25 +0000 UTC]

Wow, laptop! And new, lucky! You must have a great Dad! My own b-day was back in July and my "Wow, you're awesome but shouldn't have gotten it since it cost money" pres was a sewing machine! Never had one but always wanted one. Usually we're like save as much as you can so it really surprised me.

Still its too bad about the scanner (it will be bemoaned until you do get one, right?) but at least you have your printer even if ink and paper can be expensive. Drawing books are good for when you're on the go or when you want all your drawings to be in one place but I think you would still eventually end up pulling them out. Speaking of which I have to buy a new one of those.

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-16 07:47:49 +0000 UTC]

A sewing machine is good if you're into making clothes. If I were into cosplaying more, I'd need a decent sewing machine.

I just don't draw nearly as much as should, so buying one of those books would do me no good. Or it might do the opposite and make me draw more?

I love to put together costumes for Halloween but I've never tried to make/sew the costumes. So this year I'm going to give it a try! I always get too many ideas for Halloween XD!

I think, for me, having a drawing book does make me draw more. I just throw it on the coffee table and it stares at me. Eventually I will break down and draw something in it. Or I'll see something on TV that sparks an idea. So, yeah, I find just having it in front of me helps. You should see if it helps you--just get a 99cent one or something.

Ahhh, fun! I have no idea what I'm going as for Halloween. I'll be at that party at Disneyland and I want to wear a costume!

Now that I think about it, I used to have a paperback sketchbook that has now disappeared from existence. I doodled in it somewhat. It's gone, haven't been able to find it. I wonder if it got thrown out?

I was thinking of going to the Disneyland party since I haven't been at one before. I like when people who dress up as the classic characters put their own twist it. I'm thinking a female Capt. Hook although I might change it later.

No, not a lost sketchbook! I had that happen to me and I never found it (I'm still lamenting it yrs later)! I hope you eventually find yours (probably happen when you're not looking for it) and then you can see what was in it.

It seems my tablet is on the fritz this week , so I'm filling the last two pages in my sketch book with as many drawings as I can fit on them!
