That's kinda...sad that you have such a phobia. So no owning your very own mini version of Ratigan. Now I'm a tiny bit sad that I can't have one nowadays--it would end up in a kitty's tummy (strange though if the cat's name was Felicia).
I also wanted a ring tone of Mark Hamill's Joker laugh. I just find it amusing to have and all the disturbing looks I get would just be a bonus!

Aww, poor rat. Yup, cats multiply like crazy. My current cat is an Egyptian Smokey Mau--so pretty!
It would be so fun to see people going crazy over finding random, creepy laughter XD! Imagine the fun to be had if you set up a couple of them and set them off at different times XD! I think I'm going to have to try it!

Cats 101 was where I saw them too. I didn't know what kind of breed my cat was but then I saw that show and I was all, "So he's not a fluke of nature?"
Yours sound so cute, looking like mice would count I'd say.
I will let you know what happens when I do get a chance to do it XD!

Thanks! I don't know why but I like his poses while he's smoking.
I want to draw him enough where I feel comfortable and able to draw him without a reference. Since I think drawing Basil was easy it only took me drawing him a few times (maybe 3 or 4) to get him down pat.
Ratigan though has such an odd shape for his head that it makes him tricky to draw! So I anticipate doing a great many of Ratigan before I'm able to draw without ref.

Yes, that's true. And they use maquettes too. They really have to use the modeling sheets since there are so many people that work on one movie and everyone's drawing style is different. It would be too distracting if the style the characters are drawn kept changing every few seconds.
The reason I'd like to be able to do characters without reference is just for the times that I'm unable to have them. It happens to me often that I get a great idea to draw out but I'm not at home with all my ref. stuff so I end up doodling it fast in my little sketch book (I sometimes can't even tell what it actually is unless I write it out).
I knew someone that liked to learn drawing a character by tracing the character out on paper and then proceeding to break that character down until it looked like the steps to a how-to-draw book. I think tracing the initial drawing just helped build her confidence and show her that it wasn't as hard as she made it out to be.

Maquettes! That's the word I was looking for. Yes, the sculptures of the characters are created for a three-dimensional view for the artists. Yes! I couldn't think of the word, but I knew it started with an 'M'! Thank you!
Oh, I totally get that when being out and there's nothing to reference. I asked for a sketch of Basil from Ruben Procopio, an animator from GMD, and he was sitting at a table in the Autograph Area of the San Diego Comic Con. He had no pictures to look at, even the History of Art Japanese pin (with Basil and Olivia) I gave him as a gift didn't seem to help. He sat there and drew a quick sketch of Basil in five minutes flat. It came out absolutely beautiful! Of course Ruben has been with Disney for over thirty years, but that's a good example of how someone can draw without any reference pictures! I sort of can do it, but I don't like the results.
That's an interesting and good way too! Breaking it down and practicing on pieces, that's excellent! See, I used to trace back in the late 80's early 90's, things like horses because they were tough. As I got more comfortable, I moved on to my own until I gave up tracing entirely. But, for example, if you were to keep drawing Basil's deerstalker in all sorts of angles, eventually you'll get comfortable and it will become easy whenever drawing it.

Yup, yup. That's me, ever helpful--even when you don't want me to be! And I see now that they some times do 3D animated Maquettes! For only the 3D movies though.
Wow, that's so awesome that you got Ruben Procopio to do Basil! What year was that? Since he's worked there that long I wonder if some of the time he forgets how certain characters look? I know I would.
Everyone has done tracing what with light boxes and all. I even did some around the same time as you. My attempts though were never any good--I didn't have a steady hand and I kept moving the paper. I mostly used it for practice (never tried to say that I didn't trace it) but I got some flak for it all the same--which actually helped me get out of that and just do them on my own.
Tracing is such a basic drawing essential that its fun to come up with new ways to use it. I like to do a character on regular paper then tracing paper on top and add an outfit to see if I like that one. If not I just do another and I can save it to try on other characters.

Wow, friend of the family your lucky! For somewhat forgetting Basil still turned out great! Thanks for sharing!
I tried to do comics but I never finished any. I had a short attention span at the time and got bored easily. Or I'd lose it. I used to draw horses and man they are hard. Needless to say my real life drawing skills are better at animals than people.
Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember those coloring books. I know I always thought "Why is this in here?" Ha, really Barbie? Maybe I had the same one...early 90's? I loved their clothing style at the time, really bright and colorful. I just colored them. It wasn't until later that I figured out they would make good references.

Well early drawings are hardly every perfect. I have a few of mine and I shutter sometimes when I look at them. But others...I view them rather fondly and I'm glad I kept some.
I never actually tried to draw on those in-between pages since I couldn't figure out what they were for XD! Aww, your sister must have really like your drawings.
I've seen The Game's Afoot Fansite before and can I just say--Wow! Now that is dedication! Recently someone asked me about the House of Mouse episode with Basil on it and I know which it is and everything. But I was wondering if The Game's Afoot actually lists that as an appearance of Basil, Dawsen, and Ratigan.

I haven't really drawn only Phantom of the Opera--meaning that I've drawn characters as him or wearing the outfit for a costume. I have a cute doodle of Mickey Mouse as the Phantom somewhere....
Ah, good to see you didn't miss that piece of info--as I said, that's dedication! When I first saw that episode I took it as proof that Ratigan didn't actually die and thought that they might do something more with the characters.
Alas, they did not but they did release The Mystery In The Mist Edition DVD. So I though okay now they're going to do something more and I have yet to still see anything. It was sad but it was nice to see the movie so widespread again.

I'll have to put Mickey the Phantom up sometime. I remember the Warner brothers and their sister Dot! I used to love that cartoon but I never had a chance to draw them before.
They had more Basil in House of Mouse? Really, now I'm going to be obsessed with looking for him! You know I never really thought about it but you're right that all the villains that "died" are enjoying themselves at the club. I've only seen a few episodes of HoM and no, I never saw House of Villains but I so want to!
Ooo yeah, double disc with commentary and goodies! That'd be so great for a 25th anniversary! I hope, I hope, I hope they do that!!! Ha, now I have the crazy idea to do art of it! Basil and Ratigan fighting over the DVD that had all the extra goodies on it!

And the funny thing about me drawing Yakko as the Phantom was I thought of the idea way before the Animaniacs episode, "Dot's Entertainment" aired. I was literally freaking out as well as laughing hysterically.
Yeah, I'm just not sure which episodes they are. I did see one of he and Dawson (along with other mice) in one of those commercials at the end of the show, something about using Dumbo as a plane. Dawson's hat blew off during flight, too, pretty amusing. Neither of them spoke, though.
I actually have one idea to draw a collage for the cover. An imaginary cover, of course, since no one knows if a 25th edition will be released. I'm hoping so too!

Yeah, she's on my very long list of things to draw XD!
Yes, I love when you find other Disney characters in films that they have no business being in.
I can't wait to see your collage! That's a good idea to put the sketch up too, I always like to see the before and after color. That's a lot of time to do the drawing in and I hope that you don't wait till the last minuet 'cuz then I'll be waiting forever to see it XD! But if you do, I understand 'cuz I'm like that too. Always finishing things at the last minute can be fun though. I've done it so much its ridiculous!

Hope that you get your new scanner some time soon 'cuz it seems that you are more comfortable with that. Will the club not accept photos of drawn art or are the pictures not clear enough to bother submitting?
You know I've never had a scanner so I've always taken pictures of my drawings and it works pretty good for me but I hate it when they come out blurry. It is a tiresome method but it does work.
Once I get it on the computer I just go straight to work on it--I don't usually add the sketch just the line art sometimes. Although I am on Fur Affinity and I do have a few sketches there but I'm thinking of taking them off.

Not sure yet. The last drawing I submitted to the club was one that I was able to scan normally. I was hoping I'd have a scanner by the time I submitted all of the scanned ones so that I can scan the newer ones properly, or the ones that were photographed.
I know, I'm spoiled. I get so frustrated without having a scanner, especially when I need to scan magazine articles for the GMD fansite.
Usually, I draw the picture in full, scan it (back when I had the scanner) and keep two copies. One of the regular b&w and then the other in full color.

If you really need the scanner why not try using a stores? Like Kinko's or something?
I actually love to see the initial sketch of a drawing and then the finished piece. I keep my sketches in my drawing book and the finished one on my pc since I killed my printer a while back. I've yet to get a new one but when I do I plan to print them out.

My birthday is on the 27th and my dad was talking about getting me a laptop. I whooped and hollered since I've been dying to get one, but then the realization struck about not having a scanner for the longest time. With bills and credit card payments, I can't afford to buy one right now.
The printer still works, thank goodness, but the only paper I have is that high quality photo paper. I need to go out and buy plain white paper before I can make more drawings. A drawing book, I don't have one of those!

Wow, laptop! And new, lucky! You must have a great Dad! My own b-day was back in July and my "Wow, you're awesome but shouldn't have gotten it since it cost money" pres was a sewing machine! Never had one but always wanted one. Usually we're like save as much as you can so it really surprised me.
Still its too bad about the scanner (it will be bemoaned until you do get one, right?) but at least you have your printer even if ink and paper can be expensive. Drawing books are good for when you're on the go or when you want all your drawings to be in one place but I think you would still eventually end up pulling them out. Speaking of which I have to buy a new one of those.

I love to put together costumes for Halloween but I've never tried to make/sew the costumes. So this year I'm going to give it a try! I always get too many ideas for Halloween XD!
I think, for me, having a drawing book does make me draw more. I just throw it on the coffee table and it stares at me. Eventually I will break down and draw something in it. Or I'll see something on TV that sparks an idea. So, yeah, I find just having it in front of me helps. You should see if it helps you--just get a 99cent one or something.
