I kind of forgot the aperture (and to be honest I'm too lazy to search and check in my back-up discs), but I remember the speed being about 1/15th or 1/20th.

this photo is keren sekali!
i have a school sports carnival tomorrow, and i'd love to get a shot like this. i just don't get how to pan though.

do you think you could give me a basic run-through? please?
great photography :]

shinsenfreak In reply to mediocre-matt [2006-09-05 09:51:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, assuming you already have a basic understanding of exposure...

I'd first set the shutter speed, and then adjust the aperture to get the correct exposure (or you may use shutter priority program if your camera has it). Opinion varies about the best speed for panning, but generally it is said to be 1/30 s or slower. As you can see on the technical data of this pic, I used 1/20 s to make the motion blur more intense.

What you do then is to follow the movement of the subject you want to pan with your camera and click the shutter while keep maintaning your movement. Try not to shake your hands (hold your breath if necessary!) to get a sharp focus on the subject. On this particular shot, the only body part moving was my hip.

I'm not good at explaining things, you may find far better explanation here: [link]

It takes lots of practices, but if you get the general idea you'll learn pretty quick. Good luck for tomorrow!

Hey man, this is really good action!
I've seen it on OWP... just perfect rendition of "action" between the blur and the framing of the pic.
Bravo!

Ratafluke [2006-09-04 19:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Wow, what a perfect shot! The blur of the background, the even greater blur of their arms and legs, and their faces and torso all sharp (and the ball nearly sharp). A perfect balance focus and blur, conveys everything that counts: The sense of speed and motion, the two running players, the emotion and concentration on their faces. And the panorama format with lots of negative space on the left for them to run into rounds this off beautifully. Keep on practicing! ;]
