Sans Famille by Hector Malot is a total, unabashed, melodramatic tearjerker with a downright saccharine ending. It still gets to me every time My earliest memories of this story are actually vague recollections of the Spanish broadcast of Nobody's Boy Remi and Nobody's Girl Remi, as seen by my siblings and I on a family holiday to Spain when I was six and no clue whatsoever about the existence of anime Ah, the innocence of youth... Probably did quite a bit in paving the road to the anime-nerddom. First read the actual novel when I was 13 or so, and even then I could recognize its rather sweetsy tone for what it was and still cried my eyes out at every other chapter. Good times
