Schmidt is worth studying up on, I promise. Her books were among the first I read for myself as a kid, and her witty style and wayward characters never failed to delight. This particular novel, Minoes, concerns a down-on-his-luck journalist who encounters a most mysterious lady - not a lady at all, really, but a cat-turned-human after eating some chemical waste. She still speaks 'cat', though, and her network of feline friends makes for an exceptionally effective set of informants for the protagonist's articles! At least in the beginning...
