Description 8"x10" black paper
Derwent China White sketch pencil
8 hours of work
Reference: [link] posted by ~Menschenmaterial

There will be no prints of this image. I have found I am unable to satisfactorily scan these white-on-black drawings and retain full detail in the shading. They look good enough at screen resolution, but in order to adjust the background to a smooth black, I always lose the softer shading details, which scan to the same shade as the texture of the paper.

The original will be for sale in the Further Confusion 2008 art auction.

Enjoy.

Her fur is awesome. Is she waiting for somebody?

I'm not sure about waiting, but she is definitely bored.

Impressive. I like how you worked with white on black, as opposed to the common opposite. The texture looks great in this scan, though I'm sure it doesn't hold a candle to the actual drawing.

Thanks. If you don't like the subject much, you might look at the others in my gallery. There's an otter, a horse, and a wolf face.

Definitely my favorite part of this is the place where the tail crosses up across the legs... In this kind of medium, it's necessary to do NOTHING there, rather than add extra shading, and that takes more effortful consideration and control than simply adding more pencil until it looks right.
Brilliantly done! And a great use of the reference piece to make this natural-looking pose really come alive.

Thank you very much for your comments. They are very thought out, and most appreciated. I've always loved photography done in this style, and I've been having a wonderful time drawing this way.

I haven't seen many white-on-black sketches done before, but I don't think anything else could compare, anyway. The whiskers are very delicate compared to the thick, rough fur. Great textures, and of course, great sense of lighting. Stunning piece!

molten-fire-and-ice [2008-01-16 01:40:03 +0000 UTC]

Wow this is really gorgeous, and extremely impressive!
I just have one question - which hand is supposed to be on top of her head? I'm trying to work it out in my mind as the arm that's supporting her, but that way the hand would be drawn backwards with the thumb on the wrong side. Is it her right hand?

sidneyeileen In reply to molten-fire-and-ice [2008-01-16 02:03:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Yes, it is the left hand, and her thumb is entirely in shadow. That would have been an embarrassing mistake..... and I have made mistakes equivalent to that before. Years ago, I finished a piece and was so proud of how it had turned out, really above and beyond most of what I had been doing at the time, and then I realized I had put his left foot on his right leg...

Aww ick. My favourite picture that someone has ever drawn of me I'm lightly playing the drums..with my hand on backwards XD They happen a lot, but I'm glad to see that her hand's on the right (left? ) way. You're a wonderful artist

this is fantastic work! I love it! Looking at the thumbnail I was like.. is that a photo? how can it be, it has a tail... and then I skimmed the DD description and was like, it's a sculpture? O_____O? Amazing, love the details, looks very realistic and it is very emotive

Thank you for the comment. Your narrative was quite amusing. It's actually a drawing, but put =Butch007 in mind of a pewter sculpture. I have really been enjoying drawing fantasy and animal subjects in this style.
