Description Back in the analog days. Me, working late.

I sometimes miss that feeling, the light from the table (that actually warms the working surface gently), and the feeling of pencils scratching on paper.
Then again, if I look at the insane ammount of scrap paper a traditional animator burns through each and every day, the Digital Age has its benefits. Now I sit like this at a turnable screen I can directly draw on.

Where did you got that lightboard? It is very rare now these days!

Like I wrote, this is not my own studio, I just worked at these tables

I own some collapsible/portable ones for my own studio though. These ones I even designed myself, and had a German carpenter build for ToonBase.com - they are still sold there. Point is, I for myself today only work digital, so these sort of tables are more or less collecting dust here. I animate directly on a Cintiq 21UX.

Yes, when I am working. It's not healthy to spend your days looking at the 10 inches in front of your nose.

Wow this is really great! Really nice photo! I love these kind of Lightning tables were Artists make traditional art.

Btw, i have a question about drawing. How long have you been drawing so far in your life?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SierraRomeo In reply to Spocky87 [2014-09-23 21:28:05 +0000 UTC]

I drew stuff ever since I can remember, though the more serious approach started with the creaction of the cartoon rat more or less exactly 20 years ago.

Sleepless in Seattle ^_^ Although engineers had lamps on any side of that desk, not just behind.

I saw exactly these same ones in documentary about the history of animation.

Who knows, may be somewhere students draw on these.

There are still several studios working fully on these. Switching to digital animation is quite expensive, even though it pays off in the long run, and if a studio is established with the traditional analog equipment, with a huge stock of paper and supplies, they still have a couple years to smoke that up, or don't switch at all.

How do you do initial sketches - on computer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SierraRomeo In reply to InflationFormation [2014-09-23 08:23:16 +0000 UTC]

Today it is all on the computer. Including first sketches. I also switched to a paperless office. No more sticky notes or the likes either. Inbound correspondence excepted.

Since the 90's. Were you on an Acme or Oxberry punch pegbar?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SierraRomeo In reply to GreyOfPTA [2014-09-23 07:48:04 +0000 UTC]

ACME ones. And as there was no animation supplier in Germany, and the whole (quite large) industry over here bought their stuff in England, I founded the first German animation supply store over here, together with an investing partner. Developed our own our own ACME type aluminum flat pegbars, an own pegbar punch that finally eats more than just a few pages per punch, and my own line of animation pencils as an alternative to ColErase.
The shop is called ToonBase, and though I am not associated with them anymore, I am still proud on the products, packagings, texts and graphic designs

Yes, the entire site design, and most of the texts too. All the CI. I am quite proud of the canyon landscape (note the coyote - shaped hole in the ground, together with the roadrunner tracks hehe).

Thats how I started, too. But already in the 10 years I am in the industry, the whole animation "world" has undergone so harsh changes that I can't predict how it will look like in another 10 years. It is a great form of art - just make sure you have an emergency parachute just in case.

This was not mine actually And it is quite some time ago. Now my entire workstation is one single Cintiq. Back then, aside of the light table, you needed a paper station, a pencil test array with a look-down camera and lighting on a rostrum, and a computer workstation solely for scanning. Funny how times change.

SierraRomeo In reply to Nafyo-Toons [2014-09-22 19:30:22 +0000 UTC]

There are some animation studios in SaudiArabia, some start-ups too. Then again, if you really want to make this your profession, you may want to accept the fact that you need to travel a lot. I moved several times too, all being significant cuts to what I was used to, in regard of city, friends, way to live.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nafyo-Toons In reply to SierraRomeo [2014-09-23 13:42:57 +0000 UTC]

I signed up some of the studios in my country but mostly they don't take ideas from cartoon, all they focusing is posters and web design, that's it so far. The only place who is really have this kind of toons creativity is Dubai and Abu Zabi. They have Cartoon net work animation academy and Disney , the problem is is too expensive for a year term.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SierraRomeo In reply to Nafyo-Toons [2014-09-23 13:45:52 +0000 UTC]

Then moving might be the only option. Many animators even travel other countries to work what they love to work on.
