Description This was drawn as a reference or concept of little Gawain as he appears in the early part of my comic. And look, his hair has the right colour!

Mark the influence of my visit to Holyrood Park in Edinburgh . He's in his proper setting now!

Faber-Castell PITT pen (Raw Umber), Winsor & Newton + Cotman watercolours and a few dots of white gouache in a watercolour Moleskine.

I tried to keep it really simple as a sample for the comic colouring. Hope you like it nevertheless...

Thank you!

It doesn't always happen that way, but sometimes I feel as if I actually know what I'm doing with watercolours . This one turned out to be like that...

I just play with washes in the basement and feel like a mad scientist, so I know just enough to be impressed

Rich Celts loved their decoration. I must keep that in mind .

It's a beautiful piece but if you hadn't said it was Gawain, I would not have know that was a boy. The long hair, lace-up shoes, and dress-like tunic all point to this being a young lady. Not trying to be mean, just offering a little constructive criticism. Could also just be that I'm brainwashed by modern gender roles. Simply as a drawing though, it's gorgeous work.

Thank you!

It's okay if he looks girly as a child. It fits the story, so it's certainly not an accident .

His clothes, though, fit an Irish noble boy of the period. If he were a girl, he'd be wearing a longer (ankle-length) tunic, and the lace-up shoes are unisex. (Scottish traditional dress even has these laces added to 'regular' men's shoes, which I think is kind of quaint!)

I like to undermine gender roles, so, um, I guess that will be part and parcel of my comic in any case .

He is so cute! I will never stop complimenting you on how you draw hair! Oh, and the brooch on his cloak--very nice!

Thank you very much!

The brooch is real; I bought it while on a trip to Edinburgh. Gawain just had to wear it!

LOL! I think it's become a tradition in Arthurian media that Gawain's hair MUST be awesome.

...Japanese influence?

He looks a teensy bit less girlish with his hair in a ponytail, but it suddenly struck me that I'd never drawn him with his hair loose. I like it .

No, it's not the hair, actually - more the expression, the rosey lips, and the blush.

Sigune In reply to cabepfir [2011-08-03 08:44:01 +0000 UTC]

But I like rosy lips! In fatc, I just like beautiful mouths, so I give them some colour to draw attention to them. Then again, I've done that in the painting of adult Gawain I made yesterday evening and, well, he looks pretty effeminate ...

But then again, if we ask ourselves what we consider 'masculine' and what we consider 'feminine'...

... we could go on forever.

Sigune In reply to cabepfir [2011-08-03 10:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know. I just go for "looks good to me". The way words like 'masculine' and 'feminine' are used often provokes an allergic reaction in me. But then, gender is bound to get me on my high horse .

I suppose the question should be "do I want my character to look that way or that other way?". If you visualise him with luscious lips and a rosey complexion, go with it. It doesn't mean he can't still stink like a true swordman
