Description
In his recent self-awakening, Norway had also come to detest Denmark. In the new Norwegian history writing that emerged in the first half of the 19th century, the period of union with Denmark was referred to as "the 400 year night", a time in which the "proud and brave Norwegian national consciousness" had been "supressed by the evil Danish overlord", only to reawaken and emerge in 1814. One almost gets the impression that nothing at all happened in norway during the 15th-18th centuries - which is of course not actually the case.
