Description EEEEEEEEER! I'm in love with Sherlock Holmes now!!!! Mainly because of the new movie. XD I LOVE Robert Downey Jr.

My grandfather has been trying to get me to read Sherlock Holmes for AGES and the new movie really got me into it. Now, I know the original stories and novels are not like the new movie. Not all the action-packed Holmes beating the snot out of someone, but that wasn't my favorite parts. I liked the mysteries and deductions and Holmes's arrogant attitude about deducing said deductions. XD

And I like the Watson and Holmes characters and whatever....relationship they got goin' on. *shrugs* (The part with the hag in the movie made me laugh so much!!! Aw Holmes...)

So, I'm just trying to figure out how I'm gonna draw these guys and make them actually look like the characters. I went with classic-y Holmes and sort of an inbetween Watson. I like Jude Law's Watson, not the bumbling, overweight, old man from the originals. Sooorrry.

*EDIT* Okay, so Watson wasn't a bumbling, overweight, old man in the BOOKS. That's just how I'd always seen him portrayed as...I guess from the early movies. I dunno. I haven't even seen the old movies, so I don't know where the idea came from. I had quite a few people correct me on this matter. XD Thanks guys. I'm a little new to the world of Sherlock Holmes. Still reading the first novel.

Alright, enough rambling.

The comments on this piece (which makes me smile, by the way ) reminded me of this comic:

"[...]more than a few people have a mental image of him as a fat old dodderer. Unfair!"

Anyway I thought you would get a giggle out of it!

^^ I like your version, I've begun to read the first sherlock holmes book (also due to the movie) and Watson wasn't fat at all, quite thin actually. I'm not sure if it mentions him getting heavier in later books but I'm thinking that's just how he tends to be portrayed. Holmes should have been taller than Watson, that was my only problem, but they both played the parts very well

Yeah, I think I'm gonna edit my comments because people keep saying "Oh noes! Watson wasn't fat, fool!" XD
Yeah, the height thing did bug me a little as I was watching it. *shrug*

(I won't like his next movie much tho, it's quite a rip off

Yeah, they meet each other when they're in their twenties or something-- Watson's fresh out of the army and Holmes is fresh out of school or something. I read somewhere that they aged him up in the illustrations to make him look more...respectable? Something like that. I'm a diehard Holmes fannnnnn and a HolmesXWatson fan as welllll and this artwork is AWESOME!!!!!!!!

These are great versions
They seem very ambiguous to me..but that's a good thing. Because then you don't have to feel like you're trying to ya know..commit to one particular version and you can mess around with it. I tend to do that a lot. Or at least use that excuse.Lol.
And I agree, Jude Law Watson>fat Watson. I mean come on..he was a doctor. That's gotta mean something.

Lovely job!
I've read the originals since I was a child, and the original Watson is not fat and old. That old, fat version came from later movie/TV series adaptations. I don't know what the movie makers were thinking.
A simple calculation based on the original books proves that Holmes and Watson met each other when they were around 30, and worked on cases till their 40's. Even the drawings of Sidney Paget of the books don’t depict Watson old and fat. Yes, Paget did draw both Holmes and Watson a bit older than what they were in the books, still...

silveraaki In reply to DreamyGirl58 [2010-01-13 16:31:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
Really?! Seriously, why'd they do that?

Well, I haven't really read any of the books (I'm just on the first novel) and anything I've seen of Holmes and Watson are from the movies. Well, coolio!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DreamyGirl58 In reply to silveraaki [2010-01-13 17:26:42 +0000 UTC]

I really don't know why they did that. So we'd better always stick to the originals and "read" the stories although watching the movies and the TV series can be fun too.

Well, I've never seen the movies and TV series. I'm kinda a late blooming Holmes fan. XD I've just seen pictures of from the movies....and the Great Mouse Detective. >_<

DreamyGirl58 In reply to silveraaki [2010-01-14 06:39:11 +0000 UTC]

It's OK! It's always nice to become a Holmes fan, no matter when! Welcome to the Holmsian club! But I've loved SH stories since childhood. I was about 11-12 when I read my first SH story, and I've been in love ever since - and I’m an adult now.
By the way, about our earlier topic (why the movies depicted Watson fat and older than what he really was) I have a theory. Watson is the narrator of the stories and is also a doctor. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the writer of the stories and he was a doctor himself. So I presume the movie makers or maybe even some of the readers assumed that Watson was, in a way, Doyle himself. Have you seen the photos and portraits of Conan Doyle? He looks so much like what the first movies depicted Watson. But reading the books, I never got the notion that Watson looked like Doyle - in appearance anyway – except for the mustache, of course!

Really? Fascinating! And no, I haven't seen in pictures of Doyle. *runs off to look*
Wow! He really does! (His mustache makes me giggle, especially when he has it long and turned up at the ends) I think I agree with your theory. ^_^

Oh, and something else worth mentioning (and I know you've kind of said it in your artist's comment already), but you should know that there is a lot of difference between the new movie and the original books. If in the books you are looking for the kind of relationship displayed in the movie between Holmes and Watson, you'll be disappointed. In the books, Watson only reports the cases and how his intelligent companion solves the mysteries. That's all. There are very little hints about Holmes and Watson relationship. As for Watson, he doesn't write much about himself but rather about the cases and about the detective's characteristics and mystery-solving methods. So I highly recommend that you draw a line between the books and the new movie.
