Description Well, I promised it, so here it is: the colored version. As I lamented in the description of the sketch, I have yet to see any truly believable steampunk locomotives, so I decided to draw one myself. A rathter small one, of course. So here's the Gnat: a tiny little bugger of copper brass and steel with a boiler capacity of a teakettle (all right, it's not really that small).

I have done considerable research into finding "unconventional" designs steam locomotive drive trans (shays, heislers, climaxes, gypsies, etc.) and combined a couple of elements that I like (T-boiler, exterior frame and associated counterweights, Gypsy gearing system, and external winch mounted on the back). Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Steampunk...locomotive. Repetative. Otherwise great design, but I think the coupling rods would help.

In the Star Wars universe, this locomotive would be classified as an "Uglie," but I like it.

BTW I like your icon/avatar thingy. I've prepped the real Jupiter for operation and disasembled her for winter repairs Beautiful little engine.

Well since you nitpicked about my C-16, it's my turn on this!

Overall I think it looks good, reminds of a "Gypsy" logging loco.
Although... I see now valve gear to work the steam chest, I see the water line to feed water into the boiler, but there is no check valve to keep steam pressure forcing water back out. Also there seems to be no water storage on the locomotive at all.

And then the one thing that really caught my eye were where the cranks are located for the side rods. They are on the counter weights, which when operating would give the locomotive a bad lurching motion. The cranks should be opposite from the counter weights on the drive axle(s).

Overall however I do like the steampunk design and the use of brass trimmings and what I think is supposed to be copper piping. The design is very original and imaginative! And I'm also LOVING the headlight bracket!

hey...I never noticed that I misplaced the siderods! Stupid me, considering I've been working on removing a stuck rod on a real locomotive O_o ([link] )

And thanks for the input! I always welcome constructive criticism.
