Oh, yes. Sharp cutting instrument of doom (Courtesy of Sakuya Izayoi of the Scarlet Devil Mansion).
Thank you very much for your comment. It's always so nice to hear back from fellow Touhou fans. Especially when they tell you what they like about what you've done. I really appreciate the feedback.
If you'd like, please follow the link in "artist's comments". There are three other Touhou-related paper-cutting projects (Yukari Yakumo, Cirno and Marisa Kirisame.) I hope you'll like them, too.

WEEE Sakuya is awesome!!! (even if she wears pads XD) It took me a while to get into Touhou. My friend kept making drawings of them and eventually I got a game... then the Touhou insanity ATTACKED!
You have more of these masterpieces! Oh I must check em out! WEEEE

Oh... but she is awesome, pads or not. I think she's awesome even when's completely flat like Suika.
Just like you, my Touhou-mania hit me earlier this year because of a friend who started playing the game and got me into it. I think I'm completely hooked on them, now. It's so wonderful to actually meet other Touhou fans here on DA. I think the series had sparked a lot of talent from all over the world into adding more onto the Gensokyo universe. And that's a great thing.
Please do check them out. I'd love to know what you think of them as well.

I would have to say that Reisen is still my top favorite though. Who is yours?
Yeah, Touhou managed to grow into a worldwide fandom. The shooters are cool, but I love the fighting games. I wonder if a Touhou racing game will ever come to be...

I really can't say which one is my favourite. I have a few in mind, though.
I like Sakuya, no doubt about that one in my mind.
I also like Reisen (not the "useless bunny" Reisen, but the "Lunatic eyes" Reisen), as well as Suika, Hina, Yukari and Yuyuko - each with a different reason, of course. I have to say that I'm not entirely familiar with the characteres from the newer games... but I think that list is plenty.
I like the shooters more than the fighting games, for some reason. I guess it's just because it's the way thing started out with (and I really don't like using girls in fighting games. That feels weird.) I don't know about a Touhou racing game... but I did know about a group of fans who created a Castlevania-style Touhou game this year. It's been nicknamed "Touhouvania" by the fans.
Here's the trailer: [link]

Nice Sakuya, Reisen, and Rinnosuke are my top lol (Reisen the most).
Sadly I haven't downloaded one of the shooters yet... (barely got hooked on Touhou not so long ago). I downloaded the fighting ones because I like fighting games XD.
Holy monkeys, that game looks Suika drunken awesome! They did a good job on it! (Someday I'm gonna make games or animated movies... still unsure which way to go when I reach that semester)

Rinnosuke?
Poor Rinnosuke does need a little bit of love around Gensokyo. For the only humanoid male around town (who can't do danmaku)... he's been much maligned by the fandom, I think. (Man-suke still gives me the willies.)
I liked fighting games, too (nothing quite so stress-reliving than punching an opponent straight into the floor, I say). But I think I like the Touhou shooters quite a bit more... for the danmaku, among other things. I guess I like the whole idea of seeing flashing patterns of light trying to make me blind (and dead) on screen...
They did a great, great job at it. And I loved the production team behind them, too (Some of my patterns came from the guy who did the concept art fr them). I'm waiting to get my hands on that game myself, actually (a friend of mine downloaded a copy... but since my computer's been on a fritz lately, I am waiting for new computer before I start.)
Oh... I like games and I like movies!
No matter which one you do, keep me posted!

Yeah, Mannosuke is a little creepy O.o'... XD Speaking of Rinnosuke I'm rping him in this one forum. Well, I barely got on it so yeah...
My friend got the first shooter downloaded (got her into it too). She still hasn't beaten the second boss because of the crazy light patterns XD! (random comic moment [link] )
Let me know how it is when you get it! I just got a laptop (finally) so maybe I can download it onto there.
Oh to make the first Touhou animated movie would simply be pure bliss!

Mannosuke is more than just a little creepy. Besides, I have to say this... I really feel sorry for the guy. (By the way, good luck with the RPG!)
Aah... not to worry, your friend will get used to the flashing light eventually. The shell-shock moments will melt away so she can properly enjoy the fun and beauty of danmaku. All things will come, in time. The same thing goes with the Touhouvania game, too. You see... just like you, I've gotten myself a laptop this Christmas. However, unlike you who seem quite excited about it, all I can think of right now is "this thing looks like it's going to break... what do I do?!" (Yes, yes... I'm technologically quite impaired...) But... all the same. When I get to the point when I can actually tell you about this game, I definitely will.
Oh dear... I am very sorry to disappoint you... But not only has there been a Touhou anime([link] ), but there are other folks who are planning on making Touhou animations as well. (Since the Touhou anime got released in Japan, ZUN became quite mad at the fans and said that if the co-operations were allowed to take over the Touhou fandom, he would stop making more Touhou games.) But... either way... in the world of Touhou, the more the merrier. Good luck, my friend, and make something even bigger and better than what's out there already!

You know, I think you've got quite a task ahead of you.
Rinnosuke is one of those characters who, like Alice Megatroid, is defined very differently between Canon and Fanon (and this is not counting Mannosuke). But if we think of it on the bright side - that's even more of a challenge, right? It's exciting, in a way.
Technically, I saved up money and lined up for about 1/2 hour on the day after Christmas to get my laptop. But we needn't get so technical. And even today, I still have this inherent fear that I am going to break it inadvertently. I'm getting a friend to come in and help me out with installing a few esential programs (antivirus, Microsoft office, etc) and transfer some data this weekend so I can actually use it instead of my old clunker. My plan is to return to a desktop after I've moved into a larger, more permanent place, too. You might call me technologically backward (and yes, I admit I am!) but there are some advantages in a desktop system that the laptop still can't quite match yet. In the meantime, though... I think I still have to learn how to make friends with my new-found technological gadget.
Yes, indeed! There is already a (relatively) big-budget Touhou anime out. Aside from this one, there had been a number of fan-made, flash-based skits and short-clips-in-series that had been created. The world of Touhou fandom has to be the largest this poor world had ever seen (I mean, look, it's got its own annual convention -called the Reitaisai- with thousands of participants across the globe every year!) This means that there is a vast world for each and every fan to discover and explore, n00bs and pros alike. And even when you think you've ran out of things to do, there are always some really nice cross-overs that people have come up with over the years (my personal favourite is One Night Stand's "Advent Cirno" comics).Even if ZUN suddenly takes a hiatus (which, I hope he won't for a long time yet), the gears that make up Gensokyo will just keep on grinding forth to make the fandom grow larger and larger still. On that note, there is never "too late" in this fandom. There are always going to be newer and better things to do.
You know, when I was younger, I had this dream of working somewhere in the art industry. I even created (and partially published) a comic/manga for a short while. All of these dreams, unfortuantely, had gone very dormant nowdays. But, as I've said to a friend of mine who is presently studying and working as a graphics designer, I live my dreams vicariously through him. But the story here is not about projecting your dreams on someone else, it's about having and believing in those dreams. So what if you're a big dreamer? Those who dream big are the ones who go one to do big things in their lives, right?

True True, playing Rinnosuke shall be very interesting indeed!
I hope you and your friend fix up your laptop to your liking! Well, at least until you get a better computer (mine is older than the beginning of the universe and them some XD). As for me, I need to get a mouse for my laptop... that little finger thingy-ma-baba is cool and all but for details in pics and 3d modeling, I like the more stable and controlling mouse in my hands.
hmm One Night Stand's "Advent Cirno" comics, I'll have to check that out. (9) is the main character in it from what I see by the title XD. Yeah, Touhou has boomed exponentially from how it was to how it is now. I don't think Touhou Mania will die down anytime soon.
You should still try, your art is amazing and your style is unique! People would fall in love with your artwork! You have a manga? What is it about?
I hope that's true, of couse dreams are everlasting! No matter you faint they are they never die, and they help us achieve things we never thought possible.

Aah, but that's why it's fun, right?
Good luck with the game!
Oh... He was a great help. I got almost all of my information moved from one computer to another (The old one is called "Virgil" and the new one is called "Dante". This goes to show you how technologically backwards I am, right?) He left before everything was hooked up, though. That left me scratching my head to figure out how to configure my old printer to a new OS andmake sure it runs... Anyway... thing's are almost back to normal. Hopefully I'll be able to get used to this new set-up soon. Wish me luck?
(I call mice "rodents". And one of the first things I think I said when the idea of a laptop was suggested to me was "I need a rodent! Can I still use a rodent!?" I find that there is a lot more fine control with the mouse, even for daily activities. If you are doing 3D modeling, you'll definitely need a lot of fine control. If rodents aren't good enough, you might even consider a tablet.)
"Advent Cirno" is a cool cross-over between Touhou and Final Fantasy VII. (9) plays "Advent Cirno", a "Girl of justice". She is partnered up with Reisen Valentine. Meiling Lockhart (who works out of the Seventh Heaven Tea-house) is another person in the team who is like an older sister to both of them. Other figures who show up are Eirin Hojo (as ShinRa researcher), Tewi (also as ShinRa researcher), Yukari ShinRa and Letty Whitelock who acted as a mentor for Cirno. Other people who are supposed to appear in the next volume includes Yuyu-roth and Youmu as Kadaj. Now... I hope I didn't give any of the story away... things are a lot more fun when you read it for yourself! (And no... Touhou mania is not going to go away anytime soon. I am sure of it.)
Well... at 29 years old (I was born in 1981) with a completely different career in front of me, it's tough for me to go back to my dreams of working in an art-related field. I know there are a lot of people who are a lot better than I am (at a younger age, too). So... I think I am just going to keep this as a hobby and live vicariously in my friends' careers. Of course, I will still dream. I have some high, high hopes for some of my original characters and their stories. A friend of mine who recently visted me tells me that I should really, really get back to my stories (there are three that were stopped mid-way). The "manga" is one of them. It is called "Oneiromantic" and it is set in the 1890's London. It follows two reporters, Oliver Cayce (who can see the future in his dreams) and Markus Crowley (who is a magician) and their friends. They go through assignments and meet up with strange things and other supernaturally endowed people until they find out that everything is linked to a plan that threatened to topple the government at the time. If you are interested, [link] is a link to most of the main characters in the manga.
There was 13 episodes planned out and ready to go. I could only finish 2 of them before I just couldn't continue anymore. But I am still looking for ways that I can do something about this (or the other two stories). I know I won't get too far... but I am still trying.

Good luck getting used to Dante, good name by the way. LOL rodents!!! Wireless ones used to scare me, mice need tails to keep balance in a way and without a tail they go crazy O.O (and thus the little pointer starts jittering on the computer screen)
Wow, I'm gonna have to find these "Advent Cirno" comics. LOL ohhh Advent Childen now I get it. Meiling as Tifa fits really well, but does Meiling Lockhart have enough bust to support that role XD. Oh my, Youmu as Kadaj now that will be interesting.
Wow we're almost a decade apart, I'm only 19 at the moment. You're so lucky to have lived in the 80's! (Many people say I should've been born in the awesome 80's). Wow "Oneiromantic" seems very interesting! I love mystery type novels and such. Oliver and Markus's adventures seem rather intriguing, especially with their uncanny abilities. For some reason I can see it as a movie one day. You must finish the manga at least so I can read it!!! (no pressure really lol)
I have a tendency to stop halfway into stories as well, most of which involve my OC Mad Man Prophecy (real name: Daman McShea, here's one of my horrible old pics and some history if you wanna read up on him [link] ). At the moment I'm writing the story of his full life, but I'm trying to keep it with actual history (not being a historian of any sort makes it very difficult).

Thanks! Dante is -almost- up and running like his predecessor, Virgil. All I need to do now is to install Photoshop to run on Dante, and I'm back in business! (Well... whatever you call -this- thing we have here...) I don't know why "Virgil" was named "Virgil", but when I got the new computer, the name that came to mind was "Dante". It had to be "Dante". If I ever get another computer, I think it'll be called "Beatrice", just to follow the trend.
(Oh, rodents... I had a wireless rodent before. I thought I'd completely hate it, but because of the living quarters I'm in, the wirelessness actually afforded me some kind of freedom. So, I started to live peacefully with my tail-less little rodent. Even now with Dante the laptop, I'm still using a little tail-less rodent.)
Oh, you won't be disappointed! I love this series for all the inside jokes (in both the Touhou and the FFVII universe). I stand behind it, all the way. (...er... I thought Meiling is among one of the more busty characters in Touhou? I am sure if her "measurements" are not up to par, she can always borrow Sakuya's pads, right...?)
...Well... I guess... to fully enjoy the awesome 80's, you've gotta be born in the 70's. That way, you're not spending the crazy cool decade growing up and trying to learn how to read and write. Speaking of reading and writing... you see, my parents introduced me to detective novels at an early age. I started reading Sherlock Holmes and Arsene Lupin at around... grade 4. Ever since then, mystery has always been the genre that comes natural to me. I don't even know if I am capable of writing something that's not a mystery in some way.
"Oneiromantic" is definitely one of them. The story start out with these two guys, just going about life like any other harried reporters, trying to earn a living. But things start to go down-hill for them very quickly. They get a glimpse of the villain by the end of the first episode and these two barely escaped with their lives. (You know... I've never thought of this story as a novel... more like an anime. One of those nice and short animes that only last one season. That's why it's got 13 cases, too... that's the length of a normal season.) But... um... what... you actually -want- me to finish this? Oy... do you know how long that's going to take?
Sounds intriguing, this Madman Prophecy. I'll visit him in a moment.

WEEE photoshop is so awesome! I hope you get it working on Dante. Beatrice sounds like a good name, but something about the name Dante is just awesome!
(Tail-less rodents eat poor Reisen batteries T.T LOL)
LOL she may NEED Sakuya's pads to fill out that Tifa costume! I just downloaded the first one, and fell on the floor laughing at Reisen Valentine with her bunny guns XD
My first novels that I ever read were mystery... then I fell in love with Edgar Allan Poe stuff and lost my mind XD. Speaking of Sherlock Holmes, did you see the new movie? At first I thought what's his name (not good with names) wouldn't make a good Sherlock; but he surprised me...
Yeah finish "Oneiromantic"!!! Or at least put up the story of it. Yeah, making any kind of manga would take a while to do, especially when there are times involving writer's block. I have faith in you though, and if you don't wanna finish it that's cool. Either way, It sounds like it would become an awesome anime or movie!

Aah, Dante is a totally awesome name. (Then again, so does Virgil...). I guess there's nothing like a little classic to make the new technology a little more bearable, right? That... and a little more awesome; yes.
(Hmm... now that you mentioned it... Yes. Tail-less rodents would have to run on Reisen-batteries. But then again, I thought she would "just keep going and going and going..."?)
Don't you just looove that bunny gun? I told a friend that one day... one day... I must make it! With the little spring so the rabbit head can pop off... just like the comic!
Oh, I certainly saw the Sherlock Holmes movie. When I first saw the trailer, I was horribly disappointed (and completely appalled). However, after being dragged to see it with the rest of my family, I was forced to swallow my own words. The movie was actually really good. Not to mention the folks who produced it went back to the original novel for source material (instead of what others have done for the character in later years). I must say I went away quite satisfied.
I loved Edgar Allan Poe (who actually wrote the very first "detective novel" as a genre). That's why "Oneiromantic" is not just a mystery, but it's also a supernatural story as well. I certainly hope to finish it one day (I've got the plot layout for all of the episodes completed. Unfortunately, since they remain as layouts, I don't think anyone else would understand what I am talking about except me...). This story was originally meant to be a manga, I hope it would remain in a manga form when I complete it. I have the old documents for the first 2 episodes, but I think I may need to go back and redo them all. Things have changed quite a bit over the years (and now I don't have to be limited by the number of pages my editor is willing to give me...). The next time this story makes a come-back... it will be bigger and better.
... or that's my hope, anyway.
Thanks for your enthusiastic support ahead of time.
I will definitely keep that in mind in the months to come.

Hmm... with Reisen batteries powering the little tail-less rodents... who need batteries from other brands?
Oh, I certainly plan to do so. Now... I don't think you can buy that gun anywhere yet, but considering that I've seen Advent Cirno cosplays already... there might come a day when I don't have to make that gun myself... (Hein, but it's still much more fun if I do so myself...)
I think... the new Poe Toaster got scared. I think he didn't want to be the next Toaster and decided to throw his own spin onto this whole tradition... with people actually raising an uproar over it. I'm sad that one guy's brash behaviour is going to end this tradition. I want the Toaster back, myself. And if he doesn't come back, I volunteer to be the next Toaster! I'll leave better notes!
Ahem... you didn't hear that, did you?
Oh, you're certainly right here. I consider myself a tad more knowledgeable 5 years ago when I started the story (The year was 2005. I was working part time and waiting to get accepted into my master's program...) Aah... I really do want to go back into it. But now... Time is really, really not on my side...👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Why, thank you very much!
Paper-cutting do indeed have the potential to be "built-up" into 3D figures, but they are traditionally 2D by necessity (they used to be New Years decorations that you plaster on walls and windows). But I like the possibility to take this just a tad further.
(The PVC vest idea wasn't bad, either. It's got its potentials.)
Answer:
Paper-cutting, just like stenciling, takes preparation before cutting. The pattern needs to be made ahead of time before the knife is out. That way, you know where you're cutting - and avoid the embarrassement of chunks falling out with a miscalculated cut.

Ah, good! It's always nice to see things working out, especially if you're trying something new. One man's frustration and another man's amusement; it all depends on the person's temperament, really. So, you're definitely right, it -would - depend on who's there!

I suppose you are right.
With something as versatile as paper, it's difficult not to come up with interesting and divergent uses for it, isn't it?
Aah... it's always nice to hear that an experiment had worked out. (Now, the greater question in the scientific circles remains: Can the results be replicated?)
Life is much better when you live as an amused person. Everyday seems all the brighter. As far as those instances where things don't turn out the way you want them to... try, try and try again.

Er... without that one?
I think we'd be in quite a bit of trouble. (Then again, it's because we have this one that our trees are getting cut down. Tough balance, that one. I wonder if we can come up with recycled TP?)
Well... In the art world, it's nice to know that some things are one-of-a-kind and will not or could not be replicated again. But here's my bias as a man of science. In science, we are talking about reproducibility as a measure of proof and reliability. For us... it's all about how many times the results can be replicated. Just like what you said, like with all things in the world, there are advantages and disadvantages in everything. Reproducibility is definitely one of them.
Oh, the lyrics?
"If first you don't succeed, pick youself up and try again. Dust yourself off and try again."
It probably came from an Aaliyah song back in 2000 called "Try again" (part of the soundtrack for a movie called "Romeo must die"). I remember watching the movie and wondering "... wait a tick, there's no one here named Romeo!"

[No worries.]
I know, I know... we've been using leaves for quite a while before we turned on to this new "invention". We can't start backsliding now, can we? As far as newspapers go... sure, we can use that. But what about all the ink?
When it comes to reproducibility... well, I don't consider myself an artist by no means. These paper-cuts are, in a way, a motor exercise for me as well. That being said, I don't mind if anyone wants to try this out for themselves (it's easy: print out the pictures in their original size, stick on to another sheet of paper and cut out all the white spots). Perhaps when I start thinking more like an artist, I'll start worrying about the reproducibility of creations...
You're welcome!
I'll admit it, I first watched the movie because it had Jet Li in it. I used to watch Jet Li in his Chinese Kung-fu movies, so this was quite the departure for him. I got curious, let's say. Now that I look back to it... I still like the Kung-fu movies better...
