Description Usual workflow- SolidWorks > 3dmax > Vray
It's the second time I used HDR frame mapped in software outside 3dsmax. Only 40 minutes of rendering.

Hi, what kind of file do you export from SW to 3DS ?
I tried IGS, SAT, STL, DXF, DWG but meshes are very triangulated... or flat...

Sorry for late reply- at the time of this render I was using some 3dmax plugin, but now don't remember it- just use .SAT format to transfer models between SW and 3DS. Try Yourself, it works flawlessly- just change precision of a model. I will post some renders soon, so You can check.

I love how in the center of the ring, the shadow looks like a heart. It's very beautiful.

Oh thanks! I didn't notice before that shape is a heart in fact.

Haha! I'm not too surprised that I did. My fiancΓ©e, ~not-really-living, says I tend to notice details a lot. Really good work btw, hearts or no. XP Lol! Keep it up!

This took only 40 minutes? Dang! All of mine take at least an hour or two.

Great Caustics. I can tell you spent some time with the settings.

Indeed it was some time spent over caustics settings, but as I remember I guessed quite nice settings in one of the first approaches. Studying renderer papers is really worth it

A perfect render.

I love specially the caustic patterns.

Thanks a lot, actually there was not much work to get the caustics right, maybe it was just a good shot by mistake or I just hit the spot Anyway, glad u like it.

well, if the photon system is accurate, then caustics will be good. Don't try to lessen your part in the result

Wow! This is great!
I absolutely love the ring material.

Say, how did you do the caustics?
I tried using the V-Ray area lights, but those show up as ugly dots..

So I used V-RayLightMtl, which looks marvelous on the reflective lines from the ring... but doesn't seem to show any caustics from the diamonds. Any pointers?

Sirius-2 In reply to The-Altairian [2009-03-28 10:36:58 +0000 UTC]

Answer is as simple as it can be I just used single 3dmax point light, and in Vray properties (right mouse button on light) I set caustics multiplier to about 3,5 ;but You have to try Yourself which setting fits best to particular picture. Beside that I used simple HDR map as environment. If You have those dots, just go up with caustics subdivisions value (same place were multiplier is set).
