Description "A rare type of OMANYTE found in the Genesis Gorge. Its bizarre, coiling shell is comprised of a beautiful yet mysterious crystalline substance that seems to give it a number of mysterious powers."
"Despite early claims that this is what OMANYTE originally looked like, it has since been shown to be quite different from the fossil species. This may be due to eons of evolution in the Genesis Gorge."

**********

First regional variant of the new year! The Genesis Gorge DLC continues with deep-sea variants of four different fossil Pokémon, and we're starting off strong with none other than Lord Helix himself! PRAISE HIM!!!

In all seriousness, though, what can I say? Because the regional variants of the Genesis Gorge are themed after both deep-sea life and the very earliest forms of life on the planet, it was a complete no-brainer to include the four canonical fossil Pokémon families based on extinct marine life. This of course gave me the perfect excuse to come up with some pretty wild variant ideas that I'd wanted to put onto paper for some time now, though the one I'm most looking forward to will be saved for last of course. The Sundonese Omanyte line however came in second in that regard though, because I really like the concept I came up with for it. For those not in the know, I once came up with the idea of one of my fossil fakemon for this region being an opalized fossil, wherein the process by which animal remains become fossils is given a twist in that water seeping through where the bits and bobs were leaves minerals behind which slowly accure into the opal gemstones we know and love. Several other types of mineral also do this to those poor critters that went six feet under, but opal is the best known, and because ammonites are among the most common form of this enhanced fossilization, it was only fair to come up with an opalized Omanyte! There was a little indecision regarding the shape of the shell, though. My first choice was actually an orthocone with a shell shaped like a stereotypical wizard's hat, but everyone does the orthocone Omanyte family already, and when I found some inspiration for Omastar I knew I had to make the transition to the crazy curly shell that one's planned to have be less abrupt. Luckily, some ammonites, such as at least one species of the aforementioned Cochloceras, do have shells that coil in a conical spiral, so I decided to work with that. The color scheme of the shell itself is based somewhat loosely on Australian black opals, while the body of the normal color scheme along with the webbed tentacles are taken from vampire squid, which do produce a light blue glow! My first choice was actually Rock/Fairy but since I already had a Fairy-typed fossil, I went with Rock/Psychic instead because I needed more Psychic-types anyway. It was either this type combo or Psychic/Water, but ultimately Rock/Psychic won out because I have another variant line planned for this very DLC pack that's Water/Psychic and didn't want any overlap. The fact that this line is based on a fossilization process means Rock makes more sense anyway lol.

(By the way, before you ask, yes, the shiny sprite being colored the way it is is absolutely, 100% intentional, and is also the reason I would've picked yesterday of all days to post this variant, but I was too busy with IRL stuff that day. Ah well. Either way, welcome back, Ina! )

Unlike the previous three regional variants I posted last October, all of which put a focus on physical stats regardless of the role their canon counterparts have, this Omanyte variant is a special tank, although with six weaknesses compared to five resistances, it may be a bit of a stretch to call it that. This is why I took Kantonian Omanyte's stat spread of 35/40/100/90/55/35 and switched the physical defense and special attack (opals aren't that fragile, but they can still shatter like glass. The more you know!). This makes Sundonese Omanyte a touch frailer but enables it to hit harder with its special attacks, and to this end I transferred CrystalStorm, a special Rock-type move created for free use (with credit) by cj1206 and previously learned by 096 - IGNITHECUS , to this line now that the monke is Ice- instead of Rock-typed and has no real reason to learn it. Of course, the real draw is its strong Psychic-type attacks such as Psyshock and, well, Psychic, along with Eerie Spell which was formerly a signature move of Galarian Slowking. Signature moves have been un-signatured before and it made perfect sense with a wizardry-themed variant, so there you have it. Of course, the Water-type moves get to stay as well, but among this thing's type weaknesses they're only useful against Ground-types, and the only other coverage move it can learn that its Kanto cousin can't is Dazzling Gleam, which is only strong against Dark-types, but like Kantonian Omanyte, it can learn a few Ice attacks as well to deal with Grass-types and some Ground-type attacks to take on Steel-types... buuuuut that's about it coverage-wise. Unfortunate, but what can you do? Hopefully, Sundonese Omastar will make up for being this limited in terms of attack options with sheer brainpower... won't it?

You guys will have to wait for a bit before I get to evolve this lil' tako though, since I'm going to be posting all the first-stage fossil variants in order and then draw and post their evolutions only after all four have been revealed. Hope you don't mind this format - I thought it was fitting, personally. Sundonese Kabuto is up next, so I'll try to get the write-up for that one done tomorrow after work. Stay tuned!
