Spring was finally taking over, pushing back the remaining snow fields and slowly but surely dipping the land in vibrant green colors. Nature showed its newly gained strength to its full extent as trees and flowers began to blossom as well as all sorts of critters awoke from their slumber during the cold months. With each day the sun increased in power, warming the land and making outdoor activities a lot more pleasant. At least for those, who preferred warm temperatures.
Smaug took a deep breath and exhaled through a relaxed sigh as he let the sunlight warm his coat. Yes, this was much more to his liking. It even affected his mood; for his standard he was in relatively high spirits. This little detail might have also been the reason why he and Kelda agreed to meet up for a little walk. Voluntarily! There had been times when both of them would never have actively seeked the other’s company. Rather the contrary, but time had passed and things had changed.
This reminded him to get going. Being late wouldn’t leave the best impression after all, so he jumped into a lazy trot and made his way to the open fields which were framed by several small streams and rivers. The melting snow had raised the water level and some sections were slightly flooded, giving the area a swamp-ish appearance.
On her way to the fields Kelda found company in the two little bunnies she’s already met a while ago. She’s greeted them with a soft tone and they happily started jumping around her, as if greeting her back. When she continued her way, they tagged along and she gladly accepted their companionship. What cute little fellas!
She was still wondering how on earth Smaug and her happened to intentionally meet. For a walk. A walk. What happened there? It was a strange situation between them. Most of the time he reminded her more of a snappy dragon, an unsophisticated creature that had lost all sense of socializing. And yet here she was. On her way to spend her day with him. But on the other hand… there was something about him. Something she couldn’t really describe other than that there was this subtle quiet voice that told here that there was more underneath his blunt surface. Maybe something she hasn’t seen yet. Maybe something he didn’t want others to see.
As she arrived at the top of a little hill, her eyes fell on him in the distance. Okay, she had to admit he was nice to look at, being this considerably handsome stallion, well toned and all. It made her sigh. Oh boy, what did she get herself into this time. This guy had TROUBLE written in caps and blinking letters over his head.
It wasn’t hard to spot the mare once Smaug had reached the open fields. Somehow the sunlight seemed to dance over her coat, giving her a slight glow, like a pure aura. He made an irritated face at that thought. Where did that just come from?
Anyway, he didn’t want her to spot him like this, standing there staring, so he shook his head and approached her in a sweeping trot. “Good morning.”, the Drakkar stallion greeted her, kind of proud of how sophisticated and polite he sounded. He gave himself a mental pat on the shoulder; that had been a smooth start. “I see you brought fuzzy reinforcement.”, he added as he spotted the two bunnies. Kelda seemed to have a really good connection to other animals. They probably enjoyed her kind and patient nature and felt comfortable around her. Not that this would include him as well….. No.
“Can they swim? The rivers carry a lot more water than usual.” Who knows, maybe their fluffy fur caused them to float. Was almost worth a little experiment. Luckily his common sense reminded him straight away that pushing the bunnies into the water wouldn’t be a smart idea. Kelda would surely disagree.
“Uhm… Where do you wanna go?”
As she trotted down the hill, she already noticed how soggy the ground was, making subtle squelching noises. The water must have collected more down here. She should have known better and bind her long tail up to prevent collecting every dirt particle from this place.
“Good morning.”, she replied with a fond smile. A proper greeting. Unexpectedly charming instead of his usual way to start a conversation with an inappropriate comment or complaint. He must have dug out some manners from the bottom of his inner self.
“I hope so? Though I doubt you are planning to go swimming either. Maybe we can cross this swampy field and head to the forest? I heard there’s already a couple of berries to be found.” Or maybe a few nice flowers too. Kelda simply loved the smell of spring. She’d definitely have to find a nice spot to enjoy the early sun rays.
One of the bunnies raised its head as if he'd heard something. But the other bunny already scampered ahead, sitting back on his hindlegs and waited for the others to tag along. And so they did.
“We’ll make sure to keep your feet out of the cold wet this time.”, she assured Smaug with a warm, but also slightly smug smile. The mare was already aware of his aversion towards snow or water.
“Yea nah swimming isn’t really my thing.”, Smaug snorted and rolled his eyes. Not that those little rivers were deep enough to actually swim in, but even wading through water that barely touched his belly was fucking uncomfortable. He couldn’t stand this clammy feeling it caused.
“Sure, sounds good.”, he replied to the mare’s suggestion. They didn’t agree on a specific destination and there was also no task for them to fulfill. So he didn’t mind to just tag along and let Kelda choose their direction. He started moving when suddenly a slight breeze carried a well known scent their way, making him stop in his tracks again. “Wait.”, he said and looked around. Something wasn’t right.
