Yep folks, it is a play by play of how I made Usze!

1: The Victim - A newly arrived Elite Assault figure. N’tho already know what’s going to happen.

2: Stripping Down - Before I do any painting, I always remove any removable parts and set them aside.

3: Tools of Destruction - Some of the paints I used on this guy: I actually ended up using a few other colors as well. If he things he’s going to stop me….

4: Little Pieces First - I always paint the removed armor pieces first. In this case, the bulk of them was painted in Mechrite Red with a little spot of Liche Purple on the chest piece. Yes, Usze has a spot of actual purple there: whether that is due to design or mistake, who knows.

Side Note: when turning a figure into a canon character, always use multiple references. This is due to the different lighting conditions and it helps to have many references in order to be as accurate as possible. Finding good references for Usze was a pain, as he only shows up when there’s four people playing co-op campaign.

5: The Head - I focused on the head next. Armor plates, again, in Mechrite Red, while the body suit is mostly painted in Adeptus Battlegrey, with the eyes and the thick band going around the back of his head in Charadon Granite. I painted over the existing eye pieces because I will repaint them later.

6: Basic Color Done - Now I paint the rest of his armor in Mechrite Red.

7: First Details - Though it is hard to tell due to lighting, Usze does have darker red detailing in places on his armor. So to replicate this, I mixed Mechrite Red with a small amount of Chaos Black. I used my detailing brush to apply the mix to the appropriate areas.

8: The Wash - Now, at this point I realize I have a problem. The red I am using isn’t dark or purplely enough. The solution: a wash. I mixed Liche Purple with a small amount of Chaos Black and Mechrite Red, then diluted the heck out of it. Using this wash, I went over all the red painted areas with it, resulting in a darkened, slightly textured armor (which is sadly not apparent due to the flash).

9: Final Detailing - I went over the rest of the bodysuit with Adeptus Battlegrey. The light grey on the shoulder pieces is a mix of Skull White, Dheneb Stone and Mithril Silver. Lights on the head are Ice blue, while the lights on the chest and back are Verdigris. Eyes are Macharius Solar Orange with Tausept Ochre in the middle. Did any touch ups that were needed for slip-ups. The hock armor is a mix of Skull White, Dheneb Stone, Mithril Silver and Adeptus Battlegrey and the vent on the back of the armor is Charadon Granite.

10: Varnish and Done - Finally I applied varnish. I used a Gloss varnish for the armor/metal pieces/eyes and a semi-gloss for the bodysuit. All done!
