The background is thin wood that I had custom cut in the gothic arch shapes. One of them was split to make matching doors, but those are glued to either side. I then sculpted the ornate stuff using black polymer clay. I really get lost in details. And Ive always loved the good bones in antique furniture and architecture. They look so good even worn and pared down to nothing because of it.

Any kind of craft wood will work. the wood was dry and rolled into a panel. You dont want grainy wood that might drip sap when it gets hot. You can pre bake it to test if it will.

I am sorry for asking so many questioins but I am just amazed at everything you have done. Did you have to use something to adhere the polymer clay details to the wood or does it just naturally become one with the wood when you cook it. Also when you adhere the figure to the wood do you just use a rod. Do you use any sort of glue?and what kind? I tried making a figure with a rod but I don't think it worked quite right. Should i cook my figure with a rod sticking out and then drill a hole in my base to secure it.? Once again sorry for the questions.

The polymer does stick to the wood but if you need more stickiness rubb the wood with some oil. It sticks well to the wood but if you have a very hard wood adding glue and drying that first would help.
after sculpting and baking the figure, drill your hole and add a peg.

i was wondering. All the detail on the wood, is that made of clay?? did you put that on the wood and then cook the wood and clay together? It's really nice!!!!

Thank you.
The background is a thin panel of wood I had custom cut. Then I sculpted all the black edging and designs on it using black polymer clay. Yes you can bake the clay with wood and paper even hair. Some wood will leak sap or sometimes crack if its not seasoned well.
