Description What happens when you lose everything?
You just start again.
You start all over again.

The horse jumps through the mirror, out the the utopian world of imagination. He breaks the mirror, only to jump into a dystopian world of reality.

This came out of an ideal sketch I left lying around for a period of time. so I decided to paint it.
Done with watercolour and coloured pencils.

Wow, I love the concept of this. Plus you captured a lot of feeling with the blue you used. Very pretty. Oh, and I've question: how did you create the crystals on the left side of the paper? Or more: when did you create them? I'm guessing you used salt? I just never figured out when to put it onto the paper. When it's dry? Or when it's still wet. If so, how wet?

Wicked piece, I love it

Slickbrush In reply to Daktari92 [2010-05-09 13:33:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you ever so much!
Yes I used salt. Its best to use watercolour paints or maybe inks for this as you can make colours spread easier and lighter using water. You use the salt whilst the paper is still wet with paint on it, how wet can depend on how big or small you want the crystals, not to mention the size of the salt. Using table salt makes very small crystals, whereas rock salt creates a bigger effect on the paper. It also depends on how diluted your paint is, if it is very diluted, the crystals will be faded and a hard job to spot, whereas heavy colours make them stand out a lot more. If you really want I could make a quick tutorial.

Hope this helped!

Daktari92 In reply to Slickbrush [2010-05-09 13:45:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it sure helped, thank you! I think I'm going to experiment with different colours and salt a bit when I have more time. Those crystals just look sooo wicked If you have time a tutorial would be cool, especially because it could help others too! But if you're too busy it's okay, you already helped me out a lot.

And you're welcome

Very nice, I love the concept and your use of watercolors. However, the horse's anatomy is a bit off. The ears need to be a bit shorter, more muscle in the front extending leg, the eye needs to be up a bit higher, and lastly, the muzzle needs to be a bit wider or bigger. I drew up a redline for ya: [link]

Hope that helps! I do love everything about his piece though, the colors are just remarkable and I like I said before, I'm in love with this concept.

what a great idea and composition. i love the layout and the whole concept
my only suggestion is to work on the anatomy of horse a little more. it's hard but i think it would make this more understandable to the viewer. or maybe change the style of the horse from the imagination side to the reality side. but as is is still a wonderful piece

Slickbrush In reply to PreciousAngelWings [2010-01-07 08:43:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the beautiful comment. And thank you for pointing out the anatomy, I have wondered whether if it is a little off or not. So thank you very much, although it might be very difficult to work on it now, but I shall try in the future thats for sure!

stealing-the-light [2009-11-26 17:25:58 +0000 UTC]

Well for starters i like the gray horse against a coloured background it really makes it pop from the page. The horse its self is shaded and drawn really well i like how placed its musscels and its face is also drawn really well (just one thing with the horse a can't tell if it looks like a foal or adult as it looks very young in the face). i like also how you've used the broken mirror to give it a surreal style it almost makes it seem like the horse is running on the air its self.
The background texture is also nice and so soft which gives the picture a nice claim feel.

over all i love this picture all the elements in it fit to together very well and you should be proud of your self ^^

I was dropping by and saw this, This deserves be a DD, Its amazing, it looks so...living, I absulutly love the concept and I can't critizise anything in this, Brilliant work.

I couldn't take my eyes of it, i'm not really into art thats about Horses, for an experience in my younger day, and since i see horses every single day. But, This is just amazing. Just because its so well made, I feel proud over knowing you, and that you made this piece of art, Master piece is more the name of it, and also just because its so amazingly well made, I'm going to favorite it.

Yours,
Blaze

It deserves a DD?! Wow..
I used to be into horses, but I started widening my range on what I drew, and eventually I never drew these, so I felt like dooling Thats how the ideal sketch came out.

The fact that you feel proud knowing me makes me smile. In fact, the whole comment makes me smile!

Thank you so much Blaze <33

This really is fantastic, the colours and imagery from both sides of the picture work perfectly,

This picture as have many others inspired me to create some of my own pieces, nowhere near as good as this however.
The Horse looks as if it wants to repent its chinnerous ways and start over, perhaps why its breaking free?

the effect on the left also gives the picture a slightly chinnerous aspect to it.
