white is nco, orange is commissioned officer. red and yellow is never really specified.

That's wrong actually. The colors are more specific than that. Black is specialist, white is sergeant (TL), red is staff sergeant (SL), orange is captain. Yellow, blue, grey, green etc. are all pauldrons colors that are not used by stormtroopers.
