Description This weekend I saw this ladybird in my garden. Probably it was hunting bugs.

Thanks to ~scourge2bunnies I know now that it's probably Harmonia axyridis.

My grandmother used to say that seeing them or having them on one's body is a sign of good luck to come, and that killing them brings bad luck... Here in Portugal we call them Joaninha (Little Joane ) I guess they're cute

'Joaninha' sounds nice for these lovely little creatures.

Da's een leuke zeg!
Het is inderdaad het Aziatisch veelkleurig lieveheersbeestje, een mooi beestje, maar jammer genoeg een echte pest aan het worden..

SmoothEyes In reply to Meneerofongeveer [2006-06-06 20:21:35 +0000 UTC]

Do you think your ladybird might be here [link] ? It seems to look like the Tottenham variety of Harmonia axyridis, the first one in the images section, though that is a very bad picture. It has two round red spots on the body, broad white sides on the forebody, a white spot on the head, and red on the abdomen. It's hard to see the top of the head in your photo, but I think I see the white spot between the eyes. Your photo is so much better that it's hard to compare. What do you think?

This is an Asian ladybird that has been released in Europe and became established in Belgium in 2002. You might have captured an immigrant ladybird.

SmoothEyes In reply to pinkshoegirl [2006-05-25 22:09:42 +0000 UTC]

It sure isn't. It was made in my garden. The leaf is from a Red currant (Ribes rubrum). I had to take about ten pictures to get one very good because there was a lot of wind and I got to much motionblur.

Nice lady-bird.... I always see them when I feel good...I don't know why but most of all when I'm on a holiday... I love them... When I was young my first ring was with a lady-bird on top... I also had earrings with them.. They give me a 'free" feeling...

SmoothEyes In reply to Ilharess [2006-05-25 13:11:59 +0000 UTC]

A bit, yes, but mine has two white spots behind the head. So I think it's a colour-variant of the Two-spot ladybird (Adalia bipunctata). [link]
But I'm not sure of that.

A very strong macro - the amount of detail that you've been able to capture is quite nice, and difficult considering the extreme depth here.
