Description NOTE* I used a Sharpie with fat/thin end to ink this before anyone else gets confused.

Mike Mentzer is my favourite Bodybuilder of all time and I've learnt so much from his writings. He's a proponent of HIT training which is incredibly different to what most bodybuilders do. His research helped me get better results from my years in training.

This was referenced. This image can be found in many of his books: [link]

I photoshopped some areas of this clean and made adjustments where I messed up. For example there was a huge mistake on the right shoulder that got worse and worse. This was just something I felt like drawing randomly Then when it got to rendering time about an hr ago I felt tired, so that's why its also a bit lazy.

I should've worked on this Batman piece I'm meant to do, but Mike's a big hero of mine and I know there isn't much of him on dA. (I've searched!)

Edit, Keith, Dreee and Lit wanted me to fill in his hair and tasche as Black.

Looks real good, like it could be in a genuine comic book. There is character in his face and posture. All proportions look correct, for a bodybuilder that is. The hand is drawn as well as one could hope for. The best aspect though is your use of lines. Very economical. No more than needed and blocks of black make up the bulk of the shading. I know how hard using ink can be. You have to rely on those lines to represent the outline, shading, hair, and various other details. In this case you pulled it off in stark, bold fashion.

Such a piece though, is hard to classify as great art. Not because of the style or the subject matter. The bare-bones composition and empty background make it look a lot more like a character study. As far as that goes, "Mike Mentzer" shows off your skills quite well.

Cheers. Its drawn from a photo of now late great Mike Mentzer. So I guess it is a study and he never stood behind anything except a blank screen in the original image.

He was awesome. I tried to training routine one time. It was interesting because you worked out less but was able to put on mre because of the routine and because you rested more.

Yeh, high-intensity training is what gets me results. Mike's work and writings definately influenced my approach to life dramatically. I love lifting weights. More than drawing. Its a shame he passed away.

Man I do love your high contrast stuff!
Nice anatomy, one question though.
Shouldn't it go a bit wider at his hips?

Actually, yeh they should be. But not massively like a normal guy anyway. I didn't really pay attention to that bit cos it was going off the page.

I think Mike might've actually had a waist that was so thick that it was close in size to his pelvis anyway. A few people do have that, depending on how well they can develop their muscles in the region and how well they keep their bodyfat low. Christiano Ronaldo is another guy who shows a lot of that.

Mike Mentzer was 5'8 and 225lbs of pure thoroughbred muscle. He had long muscle bellies. Even his forearms were ultra thick. Best bodybuilder ever imo. All those 70s guys were the best. Very few since have much worth.

I do a bit of body building myself, but only during autumn and winter time when I can't go out and bike or swim. I don't really want to get big or ultra muscley, I mainly want to stay in shape, and maybe put on some extra muscles My muscles develop really slow without taking any proteins or stuff. And I can't seem to get rid of my little belly

I don't wanna be a bodybuilder either. I am a fan of the sport and the methods real bodybuilders use are the same as what even someone staying in shape needs to use for the most part.

Mike was 5'8 and 225lbs of muscle. I'm 5'7 and I try to stay around 165lbs when I can. My aims are different of course tho because I like to stay in shape for health reasons and soccer.

I don't think its healthy in the long run to be that muscular, and especially modern pros who do it through chemical help, but it is cool to watch and it does still take effort on their part.

Muscle development doesn't require as much protein as the industry tries to make out. Its a marketing gimmick. This is why Mike is one of my heroes. His books help teach many of the truthes behind weight training.

Getting rid of the belly is about doing cardio at the right speed so you're in the fat burning zone and a lot of dietary manipulation. Heavy lifting helps too.

Oh cheers for the fave mate. Glad you like my high-contrast stuff. I'll try do even better in future. I didn't think much about the inking here, and in hingsight this could've been even better.

Cheers. You're right looking at it today. In hindisght I've actually made a huge error in inking style. I did this with a sharpie and normally that means I draw a consistent bounding contour line as you don;t get much lineweights, and then go in with a finer sharpie to do internal details. Inking is about thinking and patience. Something I lack a lot of in my art.

This is GREAT, Dave. You did an excellent job on this!

I vaguely remember the name, but don't seem to be able to place the face. I'll have to follow your link and check him out.

Cheers, though looking at it now a day later, I realise I made an error in the manner in which I inked this. I did it with a sharpie which usually means I approach the inking differently.

Do you remember the guy now? I think its a shame more people don't know about him, because the principles he used and his approach to life could dramatically help a lot of people.
