Description Most basic machines have a zig zag stitch, but very few people have access to a serger. Even through I have access to one, the collar seam for the Princess Leia Organa costume I was working was so thick, the sergers couldn't handle all the layers of fabric. Zig Zagging over the edge repeatedly is a great way to achieve a finished edge if you don't have a machine that can do any sort of specialized stitches. If your machine has a blanket stitch or another decorative stitch, you could also use that.

As wonderful as sergers are, they aren't the be all, end all way to finishing a piece and making a garment or costume look like a ready-to-wear piece you bought from a store. Not to mention there are many other ways of finishing the inside seams if you want something neater and tidy, but I'll cover those in future Pro Tips.

I love the sewing pro-tips you do. As a beginning/intermediate skilled person in sewing, it's super helpful.

I'm thrilled that they're helpful to you!  After all, that's exactly why I make them.  Sometime you don't need a whole tutorial on how to do something, and instead just a few things here and there that are really helpful to what you're working on and generally improve the quality of your work.

While I won't always do sewing-based pro tips (as I expand into the larger theme of costuming like props, leather working, accessories, and more, other tools and skills will be covered as well), I'll certainly create them as I think of them.  Be sure to check every Friday, since that's when I usually post new pro tips.
