Description I made this for my adoptive grandma and grandpa. They used to have a black horse that they were quite fond of, so I decided to make this felted one look like her. It was easier than I thought it would be, the only problems I had were related to it being solid black! It was often hard to see what I was doing, and I couldn't get decent photos of her without editing them a lot in Photoshop.

Made of hand-dyed core wool over a wire armature, with hand-dyed superfine merino wool over the top. The mane and tail are hand-dyed Tussah silk with a bit of bamboo for interest.

Beautiful! I've knit a few poseable horses myself, but I haven't seen many needle-felted ones other than MLPs. Nice work!

Incidentally, where do you get your wool/fiber from? Needle-felting has piqued my interest recently, so I'm trying to get an idea of where to find materials.

I have a journal post here that I list my favorite stores in, plus a couple I haven't ordered from yet. The shop list is near the bottom, the stuff at the top is general info. I really need to organize that better.

Ah, thanks! I love your stuff, and the other needle-felting things I've seen.

Pretty! I agree that solid black can be a real issue. You need to have really good lighting.

I'm not good at realism (and I don't try to be) but I do try to at least give my creations believable anatomy.

but that horse is already realistic enough, in my opinion...I have nothing to criticize!

do you have any tips for felting a horse? i was thinking of making one myself in a little while, but i'm not so good at animal anatomy D:

What I do with pretty much any wool sculpture is sketch it out on paper first, and use that as a reference for size and shape. For the horse I drew it from the side, and drew where I wanted the armature to go. As I built it up, I would hold it up against the drawing to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be, and adjusted as needed. Use Google to get good pictures of horses from all angles and use them as reference points for the anatomy you're not familiar with.

Hey, it's Black Beauty! Great job! I love the sheen in the mane and tail.

It's modeled after a mare my grandparents had, she just happened to look like Black Beauty. I used silk for the mane and tail because I wanted that shine. I could have used a coarse wool that would have been closer to the texture of a horse's mane, but it wouldn't have been shiny. My grandparents liked that touch, so I'm glad I did it that way.

Thank you very much! I've never really gotten to be around horses, and I didn't really use any references on this, so I'm really glad it turned out well.
