Description Hey everyone. This is SofiaBlythe2014. So, the DC Superhero Girls franchise has been a very interesting ride despite only being 5 years old. I figured I should give some thoughts on certain elements of it. I will talk about 1 element where the 2019 series improves over the 2015 series, one element where the 2015 series does better, one element I like in both, and some general thoughts on season 5 of the 2015 series. Let's begin .

1. One Element Where The 2019 Series Does Better Than The 2015 Series: Episode Length

So one element I feel that the 2019 series does better is with the episode length. Each episode clocks in at 11 minutes in length. This is in stark contrast to the 2015 series. They did eventually get to longer episodes, but that took some time. It started with an average of 1.5-2 minute episodes before branching out to 2.5-4 minute episodes, and eventually 7-11 minute episodes. One example where it hurt a bit early on was the episode "Weaponomics" , with Wonder Woman trying to show off her lasso in class. However, Cheetah meddles in it, and gets her detention, ending the episode. This is only 1.5 minutes. I might've liked it a bit more if Cheetah also got detention in the end. The show did eventually grow out of this, as mentioned, but still. With the 2019 series, there are shorts, but they're a compliment to the main series. The pacing for regular episodes allows more time to flesh things out. I feel an episode like "Meet The Cheetah" shows their dynamic well in this timeframe as, even if Cheetah did technically get away with things, it at least ends with Diana learning something and being able to empathize with Barbi (granted, while not knowing it's her, but she still acts very graceful). I think a better compromise would've been if the 2015 series started with episodes that were at least 5 minutes in length, so as to bring more to the table.

2. One Element Where The 2015 Series Does Better Than The 2019 Series: Portrayal Of Male Characters

So, this is one element where I feel the 2015 series does better, the portrayal of male characters. In the 2019 series, many of the male characters do have some of their negative traits emphasized more, such as Superman acting smugly, Robin acting like an obnoxious twerp, and Hal Jordan's ego being more reminiscent of Guy Gardner. It doesn't particularly bother me since I think they're at least funny to watch, though it is a bit weird to sit through. Though I guess that stems more from Lauren Faust given how male characters aren't portrayed in the most positive light in shows where she's the prominent figure. With the 2015 series, the male and female relationships are portrayed more positively. One example I can think of is the Frost/Flash dynamic. They're both science nerds who tend to act pretty cute when they're together. One scene in the Legends Of Atlantis movie has Frost being pulled by Flash with his speed when getting to Metropolis, though it's shown in a more playful manner that she instead comes across as delightfully mischievous yet still thinking straight. Another example is the Wonder Woman/Steve Trevor dynamic, even if it's not given a lot of focus. It's played for comedy in the 2019 series, quite well, though they definitely feel more equal in the 2015 series. At most, she acts a bit awkward around him, but she is able to talk to him calmly. This is evident in most of Shea Fontana's works where she plays a major role. For example, the 2018 Polly Pocket series (which has a similar vibe to the 2015 DCSHG series, but with 22 minute stories) has Nicholas be Polly, Lila, and Shani's main male friend, and their relationship is pretty close, with any rivalry moments being more playful. Season 2 of the 2019 series is said to have Amanda Rynda (art director and creative director of The Loud House) as showrunner , which should sort things out, though there are still more positively portrayed male characters (such as Flash and James Gordon).

3. Grey DeLisle Griffin Is My Favorite Voice For Wonder Woman

So, this is more an unconventional opinion rather than an unpopular opinion, but it's worth mentioning. Many people think how Wonder Woman in the DC Animated Universe is the best take on the character, with Susan Eisenberg's performance being of praise. I'll admit that haven't regularly watched the DCAU shows in awhile (and the DCSHG franchise is fresh in my mind), so my mind is a bit rusty, and while I think the character overall is well written, I find Grey DeLisle Griffin's take on the character to be the best. It's due to one thing, compassion. While most other animated versions of Wonder Woman can show compassion, they are also more confrontational. I do like how, throughout the DC Superhero Girls franchise, Diana's peace and compassion are just as important as her fighting skills. The 2015 episode "Truth Of The Lasso" has her trying to get Cheetah to stop her plan for revenge through talking things out, and has her do community service instead of arresting her. The 2019 episode "Soul Sisters" has her trying to not inflict lethal blows on Katana and focus more on trying to make her less extreme in her ideals. Even beyond that, I like the voice she gives her. She plays her as sweet, compassionate, and a bit dorky, yet when it comes to action, she can take authority without missing a beat. Plus, she's the only person who's voiced Wonder Woman in all stages of her life. She's voiced Wonder Woman well in other projects but this gives her really good material.

4. What Do I Think Of Season 5 Of DC Superhero Girls 2015?

So, I've mentioned season 5 a few times , though I've never talked much about the whole season as a whole. While I think season 4 is the best season, I think season 5 is still good. The change in showrunners is evident here as some of what was teaser in season 4 (such as graduation, what with the final episodes sensing some sort of finality) was not followed up on. Also, Wonder Woman received less focus in season 5. There was also a weird tendency to have characters appear without dialogue, at least more often than usual. However, the writing was still good in season 5, particularly with the inclusion of a story arc. Spoilers ahead.

The story arc here involves Darkseid (voiced by John DiMaggio). He initially appears as the meek teacher Dr. Seid only to reveal hismelf in the series finale where he's trying to get the smartest minds to complete the anti life equation and take over the world . A few episodes (such as the season premiere, "Anti Hall Monitor" and "Dreamscape") build it up well. It feels like something that could've been for a DVD movie, but with what we get, it's pretty good.

Thanks for reading. Have a good day.
