Description
Your empathetic demeanor always gave you the ability to understand both sides of an issue; your indecisive stance on this new outbreak of convicts "magically" dying was no exception. While you were happy that the crime rate was decreasing dramatically, the fact that there was someone mass-murdering in an incomprehensible manner struck fear through your very being.
But you didn’t have time to reflect on controversial topics right now. You were late for your first day of college! You’re internal panic was made pretty apparent by your brisk pace through the halls, striving to make it in time for the opening ceremony. Relief washed over you when you found what you believed to be the grand entrance into the main auditorium. However that relief abruptly dissolved the moment you pushed the massive wooden entrance creating an ungodly “SCREECH!!!!”
Your anxiety-prone self was already making plans to transfer schools after this embarrassment until you noticed the minimal amount of individuals that bothered turning around to see who created the disruption; aside from a few stern teachers and curious students – you went unnoticed. Your process of calming down was interrupted when a loud applause erupted throughout the room confirming the conclusion of the speech from the two Freshmen Representatives. Wait – two? While unheard of, it technically wasn’t impossible you supposed. However you found the contrast between these two individuals quite amusing.
While one looked like an unkempt, idiot savant, the other was the clean-cut image of perfection. You disliked the latter character; for you could sense his air of superiority (like you could actually tell from the back of the auditorium), he was a model student, unlike yourself, not that you were a rebel but you were nowhere near some common conformist. Anyway, the two individuals peaked your interest; the possibility of having either of them in any of your classes made you anxious for your first year of college.
Aside from getting lost a couple of times; you survived through a majority of your first day of college. Navigating your way to your last class of the day, you realized that you didn't see anyone you recognized in any of your classes, including the freshmen representatives (honestly, you would have clung to any hint of familiarity you could find within this grandiose institution). Perhaps the loneliest aspect of this trivial predicament was the fact that you didn't have any classes with your best friend, Damien. Not that it was a surprise, about a month ago, the two of you were comparing your class schedules while lounging in your favorite café. But you didn't need to see his schedule to know that you two weren't going to be sharing any classes. Ever since the two of you met in 7th grade, he'd always ramble about Law and Criminal Justice; a major that was nowhere near related to your own. Nevertheless, Damien agreed to hang out whenever possible. He wouldn't let education get in the way of interacting with the bestie.
Dazed in your thoughts, the surprise of colliding with an object was nearly too great for your heart to handle. Rushing to retrieve your dropped workbooks and syllabi, you noticed a helping hand reaching for the rest of your items.
"You should be more careful, the halls are very crowded during passing period.....(y/n)"
Looking up to find out who the concerned voice belonged to, you discovered that the person assisting you was none other than Light Yagami! You began to panic; coming to the realization that is was not an object you ran into, but the (one of the) class representatives!!
"I-I'm so sorry, thank you.", you whimpered timidly as he returned the papers to their rightful owner.
Light chuckled at your bashful response, "You're very welcome; I wouldn't want to leave such a cute colleague in distress."
"Aha-ha-aaaa....", your trademark nervous laughter surfaced, "...well, I should head to class now... Thanks agai-"
"What class do you have? What room is it in?", he eagerly interrupted.
"Ummmm Biology, in room... SB-227?" you indefinitely confirmed
"What a coincidence! That's where I'm going.", he chirped.
You and Light made your way to class in silence.
'WAIT'.....you abruptly realized, 'how did he know my name?!' you inquired to yourself frantically.
Perhaps your thoughts weren't as internalized as you believed, because promptly after that thought-
"What did you say?" the brunet questioned innocently.
Were you really going to ask him? Did you really want to know why he knew your name?? What if he was a creepy stalker??? Or even worse, someone you have previously met but you completely forgot about the encounter and you were hurting his feelings because you showed no signs of recognition?!?! Despite your fears, you gathered the gall to ask anyway.
"How do you know my name?" you questioned more sternly than intended.
His pause which was probably intended to process the unexpected question but was interpreted by you as time to make up an excuse as to why he knew your name because he totally met you fairly recently but didn't want to make you seem foolish so tried to create a believable reason that he knew the name of a person whom he has never seen until this day. But you quickly decided to disregard that possibility. Your brain was a steel trap. You would have never forgotten a face, especially one like Light's.
"...It was written on one of your papers that I picked up.", he responded, still slightly caught off-guard by the question.
"Ohhhhh, haha, I thought you were a creepy stalker or something.", you attempted to make light of the topic.
"I wouldn't mind being your stalker, but I'm far too busy being an exemplary student.", he joked.
Despite his reply being humorous, you took slight offense to it, probably due to the fact that you spent the majority of your time reading fan fiction, watching anime, and playing video games. Your test scores must have been crap compared to his; not that you were dumb, you were just preoccupied with indulging in your unproductive hobbies. You knew that if you actually studied, your grades would have been even better.
You and your new acquaintance managed to make it to class without anymore talking. Upon entering the class you immediately hustled to the back of the room, not because you were a hoodlum, but your inherently introvert instincts made you feel comfortable in the back, where you can doodle and daydream to your hearts desire. What you failed to notice, was that Light was happily following behind, like a loyal puppy. It wasn't until he sat down by you matter-of-factly, as if that was the only rational place to sit, that you realized what was happening. However, he saw the confused, and slightly irritated glance you gave him.
"You don't mind if I sit here, do you (y/n)?" he asked merely as a formality
'Yes, please go away.' you mentally requested however, it was due to unassertiveness, not niceness, which you complied, "Of course not.", smiling pleasantly in hopes of making it more convincing than it probably sounded.
Light decided to ignore your reluctant tone for now; satisfied with your agreement, and a little pleased with your passive nature.
Aside from minor smalltalk between the two of you, class consisted of an unnecessarily lengthy description by the professor of what you'll be learning and dates of major projects, essays, and tests. Luckily, the instructor eventually ran out of syllabus pages and allowed class to be dismissed early, giving you a generous amount of time to leisurely stroll to your favorite café, where you agreed to meet up with Damien after your last class.
"So (y/n), do you wan't to go grab a coffee with me and converse for a while?" Light suggested hopefully.
"Oh, sorry, I made plans with my friend, I should leave soon or else they'll scold me." you politely rejected.
Not wanting to impose, but not quite ready for you to leave yet, "Well why don't I walk with you there? It's getting dark, It wouldn't feel right letting you go alone." he offered.
"If you insist." you retorted, but in reality, you were relieved, being a female out by dark, was unfortunately a very dangerous position to be in.
Before you knew it, you had already arrived at the café. You graciously thanked Light for coming with you and felt a bit guilty for leaving him like this but you were ready to decompress with Damien.
"Anytime, have fun with your girlfriend, (y/n)." he happily assumed.
You didn't bother correcting him, Damien might as well have been your girlfriend, he was about as straight as a rainbow and you were eternally grateful for that. Most guys made you way more uncomfortable than you let on. But Damien always managed to be simultaneously nice and sassy in a way that just made your anxieties disperse. Besides, it wasn't really Light's business to know what genders you were socializing with anyway.
As you entered the place you saw Damien in the usual spot, by the window where you could observe pedestrians and point out who you would "tap", on his computer; probably playing one of those ridiculously difficult mystery games that you could never finish, you always got frustrated within the first 5 minutes and aborted those brain-wracking games. Once you walked up to him you flopped into the cushioned booth and let out an exasperated sigh.
"Your late betch.", he calmly pointed out, refusing to make eye contact with your unpunctual self.
You just replied with an apologetic grin.
"Is it because of that tall, dark, and handsome fellow that escorted you?" he inferred with a mischievous smirk.
Too tired to reject the fact that you found Light attractive (you didn't have to like someone to think they might actually be kinda hot, perhaps) you hesitantly acknowledged the assumption, "Maybe."
"Well you might as well give up on him, honey, cuz I saw him first." he established.
"Haha, by all means, please take him." you insisted
"He's in a lot of my classes you know, him and that weird kid... what's his name? Oh right Ryuga. They seem pretty close and I guess they're both have the same major as me." he mentioned.
You two continued to joke and complain about your first day of school for a couple of hours. Unbeknownst to you, there was a pair of reddish-brown eyes staring you down from the restaurant across the street the entire time.
'Who the f**k is that guy that she's sitting with!? She didn't tell me she was going to meeting up with some punk. If I had known, I would have never let her be! Who the hell does he think he is making her laugh and smile like that?! (Y/n) is mine you cheeky little f***er. (Y/n). I implied "girlfriend" for a reason! I wanted to make sure or have you correct me if I was wrong! Do you not trust me? I was nothing but nice to you. Do you hate me? No, no, you could never hate me. I would never allow it. If only I knew his name so I could kill him immediately - then I wouldn't have to worry about you being taken away from me. As if I'd ever let that happen. You just need some time, don't you? Then you'll realize that you love me.'
Damien eventually drove you home and gave you a quick peck on the cheek before you got out of the car.
"See you later (y/n)." he farewelled warmly.
"Mkay, thanks for the ride." you replied.
As you walked into the house you were greeted by your parents, you gave a brief acknowledgment back but rushed to your room soon after, plopping all your new books and papers on the floor. You began looking through your new pile of stuff, reviewing syllabi, ensuring you didn't have any homework on your first day. While you were scanning through the documents, your mind wandered, and began to reflect on your new associate. He appeared so reserved and formal; his friendliness left you unnerved, and from your brief experience with him, he seemed like some self-entitling demanding child, but you decided to tolerate his "kindness" for now. Finally got to your last piece of paper. But the profound realization you had in that instant shook you to the very core. Your name was not written on any of the papers.
"Th-then..... how did Light know my name?" you questioned with a new-found anxiety which you have never before experienced. You were scared to go to school, but more prominently, you were scared of Light Yagami.
