Description Please imagine the spaces in the title are alright. Damn title limitations.

What inspired me to draw this...erm, picture, was the words at the very bottom of this page ([link] ) : "He was bitter and he was vindictive... "

As I read that,I immediately thought of the "Stranger Than Fiction" movie, and the theme about what would happen if the author and his character were aware of each other's existence. And of course, this was the reaction I could picture from that particular character. He was supposed to be in a "What the hell, you put me through all that s**t, you killed me and on top of that you're trying to JUDGE me?!!!" kind of mood...well... I dunno, I was just looking for something to draw for the fans. I found it cute.

Fictional characters are people too, you know. And they are NOT bitter and vindictive. Not one bit.

Thanks Which reminds me I have to draw a better Snape one day. St. Snape... it would be an idea to ponder over

How DARE you say those things about Rowling? She is one of the most awesome people in the world. If it wasn't for her, there would be no Snape (not that I would mind that). She is damn right about Snapes character, and never said that she don't understand him. Snape let children take the full blast of his anger, and still had the balls to think himself superior to James (who matured unlike Snape). I have been through a similar hell to the one that Snape lived, and there is no excuse for his behaviour at all. Snape-fans can be really stupid when it comes to their own "God" sometimes.

I have to say, indeed, many years ago, when I painted this, I was being indeed quite intolerant and I'd say I'm a much better and more composed person right now. I don't think the things written in this picture, and never have, although there is a slight chance that I assumed Snape as a character would react this way to the idea of Rowling having chosen this fate for him. Still, even then the idea of the picture is that he IS bitter and vindictive. And everyone knows that about Snape. He's no angel, certainly not, but then again, people wouldn't love him half as much if he was the cliched virtuous character, the hero. I think it's his mixture of motives, of the struggle between his unnatural moral choices in life and his innate predisposition to darkness that made him such an interesting character in the first place. I am not trying to claim he deserves redepmtion. If you've been through a similar hell to Snape, you contributed for your true love's death and what not, then I am not in the position to say anything more. But I don't consider Snape my "God"; nevertheless, I've always liked him as a character, from the start, and I would have still liked him even if there was no "excuse" for his actions. In my opinion, he's just unique and one of the most multi-layered characters Rowling ever developed in her literature.

Wow, thanks for the reply . It's ok to feel differently about a character. Some people like the bad guy, while other finds darkness to be banal. It's true that I and Snape have some similarities in our personal history. Things were difficult for me both at home and in school when I grew up, just as it were for Snape. I can also relate to his feelings of guilt for the death of a loved one. A person very dear to me took her own life, and I feel horrible about it every day . The nagging thoughts of guilt like "I should have called her more often", seems to never end. Snape and I both share the experience that love can be difficult to hold on to. I can't however say that I've been a deatheater XD. Enough about that. I hope you keep doing artwork. Take care!

I'm very sorry to hear that you've been through something similar to Snape. I don't think any good living person deserves this. But then again, we learn from what happens to us. It's true Snape isn't all sunshine and daisies, and he could have made better choices, chosen to be a better person... and not a death eater but then again, I don't know if he was raised with a strong concept of right and wrong to begin with... As for the bad guy, I don't know if I'm one of the people to be considered "a bad guy person". I firmly believe that in every person/character there's gotta be something good, otherwise he cannot be truly loved. Darkness in itself, deprived of good, cannot evoke affection. Anyway, thanks and I hope we got over the misunderstanding from so long ago, I was quite immature when I painted this picture...

Curry1 In reply to Soulstripper [2012-03-09 23:01:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your kind words. Your thoughts on what makes a character loveable are interesting. You are really insightful about these things The misunderstanding is cleared out completely as far as I'm concerned. Like you said, we learn (hopefully) from what we experience in life. I feel that both of us have matured since the picture was published here on deviantart. I should have reacted in a calmer way than I did when I first saw it. I have now learned to think a bit further before adding comments. Anyway, take care and keep up the good artwork. Cheers!

You're very welcome; and yes, it's only natural for people to mature with time. But I don't think your comment was inappropriate; on the contrary, I find it interesting to debate with other people about art. Thanks again and good luck to you too

I agree... JKR has some nerve. Even after she wrote him in book 7 as the saddest, loneliest, most hopelessly romantic and heroic character in the entire series... (Or maybe thats just MY point of view. )

I love it.

I identify totally with Snape for many reasons, although I'm female I was just like him in my school days and yes, I'm bitter and vindictive about some of the shit thats happened, but then why shouldn't we be?

I love this and think Sevy has every right to be a bitter twisted git.

Best wishes

I'm so glad you think so. Oh yeah,I can relate to him a lot too,not just because of love or school, but my family too,and everything... I know one should try to overcome what was in the past, but some people just don't deserve to be treated all kindly and sweetly.

I'm glad I came across you.

Chaobaby7 In reply to Soulstripper [2008-01-07 20:45:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, you seem like a kindred spirit anyway. I think the past makes us what we are now and its just not possible to overcome it all, it has coloured my future. Theres so many reasons I relate to him and also because he was drawn to things that are forbidden and dark, if you know what i mean, I always was drawn to such things, I wanted to know things that people said I should not try and find out about. I hope I make sense.

Yes,I think you make sense... I must say I try to be nice and go by the good way and all that,so no one could really guess, but I often spill a lot of blood in my mind and I know the dark of the mind, that's for sure...

Me too, i do my best to be decent to others and spread some goodness around, I am reconciled to darkness and am not afraid at all of death, I see it as part of the whole wheel of things, not always pleasant but acknowlegding death and darkness means you can really live, maybe half the world's problems are people just not wanting to face up to that. Sorry for bad spelling, the joys of Dyslexia!!

Haha, thank you! It was all just a laugh, that picture, just to show he really IS bitter and vindictive, and that Rowling is a really really clueless person, but I'm glad it made some of you laugh...though I got so many touching analyses on the way she treated Snape. I was glad to see people care so much. Sometimes fictional characters are more loveable than real people.

Thank you. Yeah, nothing wrong with being bitter and vindictive... well,if he was ever out to get Rowling, she'd most definitely not think so lol

I think Snape had enough reasons to be at least bitter and of course vindictive. Some of us aren't brave enough daring to be vindictive, so that we only become double bitter.
And thanks after all ,Mrs. Rowling, for insuting Snape any time you have a chance. This only achieves that people takes part for him more and more.

Soulstripper In reply to frodobolson72 [2007-11-14 10:49:05 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree. I'm double bitter, because I don't have the guts to be vindictive.
Haha,I'm shocked and yet so happy that picture thought up as merely a joke at first turned into such a model of agitation against Rowling's insensitivity towards her own characters. It's really amazing. Yeah,I guess that this will make people support Snape more and more
