I absolutly love the way you do hands, always have.. and I love the lightbulb/ flower... it reminds me of optimism.. which usually I roll my eyes at but in this context I smiled at

Thank you... I guess I need to resume doing that I did not see the picture as something optmistic back then, but later on I started seeing the lightbulb as a symbol of alternative light, as the thing that lights your way when sunshine is absent. Maybe I've written this before, but I see it more clearly after all these years.

I found this painting very interesting.... every time I sign back on to deviantart I look at it.... I'm still trying to get what you're saying in the painting.... after a while of thinking about it I think I'm coming close to what you're saying, but there's some things I still need to know. Because rain is mentioned in both the title and the words in the painting... is it also a symbol of anything? And is the fiend reaching out to something, maybe the rain? And going to to the comment where you explained the symbolism of the lightbulb flower you said "Here,it is a symbol of artificial light = Artificial hope = A substitute for the real thing = A drug. Just like the fiend above. He's both a drug and an addict. Addicted to the minds of those addicted to him. Still,it's a lightbulb flower for the flower implies about something exquisite...as well as something growing, something living. A creature. The lightbulb is an object. A lightbulb flower is a living thing - and only living things can be addicts." does that mean that the lightbulb flower also represents the minds of those addicted to the fiend? Eh, sorry about all the questions, lol ^_^

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply. This is a very clever comment. I'm glad you're so interested in this painting, so I'll try to reply to all your questions.

In this picture, the rain is a symbol of pain. The fiend is reaching to get out, reaching for the rain, because pain is what calls him out, what brings him to life. He himsef is a drug,a painkiller, and the addict needs him to stop the pain. Still,he is an addict too, because he's addicted to being needed by those addicted to him. As for the lightbulb flower,it represents the mind of the fiend. He's like a lightbulb, artificial light. He's artificial hope for those addicted to him. He gives them fake light when there is no sun, gives them fake happiness when they can't get any real happiness. And this brings forward the everlasting drug and drug-addict relationship, when the addict needs the drug, and the drug needs the addict, because it needs to feel needed. That's why I wrote "who needs who". Well,I dunno if that made it any clearer for you,but I hope I helped...

That helped a lot, thank you. Now I understand.... it reminds me of a similar thing that happening to me.... It's not a good place to be in at all.....
Thank you for answering my questions for me!!!

Oh wow... My heart hurt when I looked at this. It's so brilliant, though it made me sad. I loved your description of the lightbulb flower. You put SOOO much emotion into your work, as I've said before... Just amazing..

Well...thank you I'm sorry it made you sad. But still,it's good to hear it is influencing after all. Yes,I put a lot of emotion into it. There's always a lot of emotion left for real life too, though.

Myyy dear.
And the symbolism? Symbolism makes everything a million times better.
Overall, it's absolutely stunning. :]

Why thank you. I am glad you think so. Glad you liked the picture, and the symbolism. If you feel the feeling, though,it won't seem that good. Still,I'm flattered.

That is truly powerful. The expression is deep and to me seems almost wounded.
May I ask what the lightbulb plant represents?

Soulstripper In reply to Shiny-Marble [2007-07-11 09:08:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. It is wounded, and it can wound too. Fiend, like I said.

At first it represented nothing. At about 2 a.m. the day before I drew this one I had started to draw another picture which involved a hanged girl and...nasty stuff. In that picture, I drew a lightbulb flower instead of a lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. I had no idea why. It was 2 a.m. after all,it just came to me,and thought that was both beautiful and scary. Like a witness of a crime, you know... Then, still,my father forbade me to finish that painting for it was too horrible for his taste, but I kept the lightbulb flower idea and painted it in this one. Here,it is a symbol of artificial light = Artificial hope = A substitute for the real thing = A drug. Just like the fiend above. He's both a drug and an addict. Addicted to the minds of those addicted to him. Still,it's a lightbulb flower for the flower implies about something exquisite...as well as something growing, something living. A creature. The lightbulb is an object. A lightbulb flower is a living thing - and only living things can be addicts. I'm not sure if I'll be able to explain that type of mind-addiction I've painted but I'll try... Let's say you're a real drug addict. Whatever they say, you can always give up...but things get complicated when the drug starts craving to be swallowed by you....

Soulstripper In reply to Shiny-Marble [2007-07-12 13:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I really don't think about it,these things just pop into my head and it's only later that my mind realizes what my heart is trying to say. Funny that I provoke people to think when I don't put too much thinking in that at all...

Shiny-Marble In reply to Soulstripper [2007-07-12 19:15:09 +0000 UTC]

Trust me, the same happens to me with writing poetry. In the middle of class I just start writing, then once it's finished, I always wonder how the heck I thought of it.

Shiny-Marble In reply to Soulstripper [2007-07-13 20:14:41 +0000 UTC]

But it's a little annoying when your physics teacher sees you writing in class when you aren't supposed to be, then she gets tetchy, 'asks' you to stop, then you've lost your train of thought.

Soulstripper In reply to Shiny-Marble [2007-07-13 21:01:52 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't worry,I know exactly what you mean. You have no idea how many times I've been told things like "this isn't an art class,miss".Story-writing seems harder to detect, though. I'm glad I only have one year of school left. And from then on,hopefully,my life will change forever.

I agree. Still,it's much nastier when your muse comes in 3 a.m. in your bed and you have no pen and paper around, still you're dying to get some sleep and yet do your best to repeat the idea to yourself over and over again so you don't forget it,and in the morning you are absolutely clueless, and the only thing you remember is that you had a brilliant idea that you forgot.

Shiny-Marble In reply to Soulstripper [2007-07-16 19:28:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh, definately. Teachers can be such a pain sometimes. I've got until December next year before I'm leaving school.

I've had that once or twice before, which really annoys me. So, since then, I've always keep paper and pens nearby wherever I am, which helps a lot.

My goddess -- that sultry, menacing expression on his face is astounding. I understand your message is important, but with this particular piece, I almost wish the words weren't there, covering up the environment he's placed in.

But, wow. You're amazing, woman! A-maze-ing.

Soulstripper In reply to RayvenOGiger [2007-07-11 09:36:41 +0000 UTC]

Gee,I had far too flatteries for just one day. I really can't express my gratitude right now. Wow. I never thought I'm worth that.

Thank you SO much. To be honest, I wish the words weren't true either. But when I state them out loud on the sheet like that...well,it gets easier to accept the truth. Makes me feel better about what I feel when I let it all out. Scream it out, pour it out, smudge it out, scratch it out,let it crawl out... whatever it is. Who needs who,I keep wondering. Who's the more lost addict...
