Description

In ancient Egypt, Sephnet's kind, the venomous snakes are playing a role of outcasts. Rarely, they can be found executing an occupation of higher reputation like writers, physicians or viziers. Degraded to farmers, craftsmen or constructors living excluded in the outer parts of the Egyptian empire, there is still one who made it to become a high priest; Sephnet. The extraordinary understanding of the ancient language of uncertain origin and her unquestionable affinity for learning the rites of the gods were the carrying traits of her acceptance as priest of her temple. She'd have the privilege to serve one of the most despised gods; Apophis or Apep, a god of darkness, chaos and enemy to the daughter of the beloved Re. But being the god of her kind, Sephnet wouldn't be less committed to please her god, keeping his temple clean and hopefully preventing a dark fate to overcome Egypt. If the darkest of times would ever arrive, so she knew; everyone would blame her and the outcast serpents.

But having a lot of time and nearly nobody watching over her, Sephnet became most intrigued by the dark forbidden secrets... She would read in several books of the dead, find manuscripts and documents that would recite the fates of those prepared for the afterlife and more and more, a thought would sprout and grow… the thought of asking her god… to return someone.

Apophis has been slain again and again in the stories but always returned to the living to prevent the sun to rise on the horizon. Suppressed by Horus and subjugated by Ra, Sephnet sees the opportunity to weaken their powers by stealing either of their artefacts; Staff and Circlet. The Ankh would allow a soul to return to its body and be filled with life again.

Hello!  I’m here from with some constructive criticism.

After commenting on your 2018 year in review collage about a month ago, I instantly recognized your unique style in this piece.  Your designs blend the features of animals with those of humans in a way that looks more elegant and natural than any other anthropomorphic characters I’ve seen.

In this design, I especially like the long neck with the cobra hood.  The area where Sephnet’s stomach meets the base of her tail is another great detail; it reminds me of the way mermaid tails are typically depicted, which makes it look familiar and natural.  No part of the body looks unnatural or difficult to move.  The way her tail is coiled behind her makes it look like you’ve captured her in motion.

I like that you included versions of the character with and without clothing/accessories.  That way, the anatomy is clearly visible, but we also get to see what Sephnet usually wears.  The bright yellow of the leopard pelt and feathered crown add a nice splash of color to her dark gray scales and purple eyes.  I also like the way the skirt works with her body shape.

The shading looks amazing throughout.  The metallic staff and the symbol hanging from her belt are so beautifully shaded that they look genuinely 3-dimensional.  I also love the scale texture.

However, I think a different background color would complement this particular design better.  The gray scales don’t contrast very well with the gray background, even with all your highlights and shadows (and the jagged outline behind her, which I do like).  The warm orangey hues on the left side of the reference sheet look better than the cold gray on the right, but I’d still suggest using a totally different backdrop—something like a simple desert background, to go with Sephnet’s backstory.  You could paint dunes of sand behind her tail and blue sky behind her body from about the waist up.  That way, you’d get the same nice contrast between the yellow and gray for her tail (which is currently a little difficult to make out because of how dark it is) while also preventing her outfit from blending in with the sand.

I’d also like to see Sephnet’s design from a few other angles.  The pose you drew her in here looks great, and the close-up on the head is helpful, but the reference sheet leaves a few questions unanswered.  What does Sephnet’s back look like?  How long is her tail in proportion to the rest of her body?  When you make a reference sheet, try to make sure nothing is left unclear or unanswered.

Overall, I love the design.  It’s clear that you put lots of thought and effort into creating this character.  The only issues I noticed were those of presentation.  Try to pay more attention to the way the subject and the background interact with each other, and the parts of the design that you can’t see from looking at the character head-on.  Other than that, keep up the excellent work!

Hello again, Luna, thank you for coming back!

Good to hear you could remember my style and easily recognize it here. I think finally, something is about to solidify as my style.

I am very intrigued by your ideas of implementing a back-shot and whole body proportions. Back then, I was quite unfamiliar with reference sheets and what I could implement there. So in future, I will ask myself and a couple of others what questions they have regarding the character I'm portraying. I just wish I heard that before the point of finishing my layout for my current project

Anyway, regarding the background. I consciously decided against a bright background; note that I have made plenty of formats before. The dark blue to orange colours were to represent her character. The dark tone of blue obviously presents the darkness or night, which stands for her dark and questionable personality while the orange on the left represents light as a glimpse of hope on her dark path. Perhaps adding a dune or temple structure in the background could have added some sense of location, I give you that. I left this background because it was dark enough to get this across yet still separating her from the background for a proper showcase, but visibility and contrast are always on my mind nowadays because I had quite some mess-ups in the past ^v^

So thanks again for - once again - commenting your feedback on one of my artworks. Know my appreciation is there, sadly I can't give you another llama just yet, a hug will do

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

You're very welcome!

It's interesting to hear about the way you chose the background color to emphasize her personality.  That helps me realize that it works better than I originally thought.  I also do think that orange and dark blue are a unique color combination.

Thanks, but I guess it is very metaphorical and is usually not found in reference sheets. I'll keep things more practical from now on ^v^

Hello there and thank you very much for your constructive criticism! Despite I am happy with how much positive critique I get, I am also if not more happy to hear about things I could improve on.

I have trouble with contrast but I think your comment just made me realize that I really have to work on it more and take a step further in my rendering (and this includes reflected light) to achieve a better result.

And now that you mentioned it, I see that the red accent colour looks very weak. I'm always careful with adding too many saturated colours to my artworks but here I take it to my account that the red could've been more vibrant.

As a sign of my appreciation, I'd like to give you a llama. Have it and enjoy your weekend!

hey , comming from Project comment

I like overal look of the picter , concept is clear and form and anatomy are delivering your idea. Fierst thing which is a bit distarbing is the way you present your work, what I mean is this ugly raw stork over the charakter, ad least you can make ita lot tider and cleaner. Secund thing which can improve picter in my opinion is make ita bit brighter, shadow side hides to much, what can inprove that is adding secund light source or maybe some rim light. When working in shadow you can use abit more colur varietions insted of burn tool.

On plus side is clouthing ( what character is wearing) one can without any effort say where character belong.

Sorry for my English , hope it was helpful.

Hi there and thank you for your feedback.

Unfortunately I didn't understand all of what you had to say... What is this 'raw stork' you were referring to?

But I think you are right about the secondary light, it could have been somewhat more intense here, I'll try to work on that.

Have a nice and relaxing weekend!

I think that game would've been a wonderful source of inspiration for this sheet and probably more to come. But I strictly refuse buying any new AC games since 3 because they have lost their edge and with Origin; went in a too RPG grindy and time wasting experience. But maybe when it will be as cheap as about 20 bucks, I'll consider checking it out as it shows a lot of Egyptian detail.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaintedArtisan In reply to Souvillaine [2019-06-28 11:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what you mean^^

AC did lose their touch since 3. They even chose boring historical settings (In my opinion). But AC Origins feels really different. Doesn't exactly follow the same old formula, but it's SO good! Iv'e played all the AC games, and I find this one to be my favorite. The character you even play as is awesome (I might like him more than Ezio). So he's not like Connor (Acting like an edgy 14 year old teen ). I would recommend giving it a look^^

TaintedArtisan In reply to Souvillaine [2019-07-03 22:33:15 +0000 UTC]

No problem^^

I mean, you could take a look at some of the game play along with some of the earliest stage of the story first before buying the game. No need to just buy it without knowing how the entire game works (So that you'll be sure to know whether you like what you see in the game and not end up wasting money on a game you have no appeal towards whatsoever.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Souvillaine In reply to TaintedArtisan [2019-07-05 08:38:52 +0000 UTC]

indeed!

I always watch some reviews of games on YT before I buy a game. I have made two very harsh mistakes with buying a new game before that taught me to distrust big companies and never to pre order a game again. (the games were Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Far Cry 4 by the way.)

Do you have any games or movies you regret buying?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaintedArtisan In reply to Souvillaine [2019-07-06 22:05:45 +0000 UTC]

I have actually
My friends were nagging me for years to get Garry's mode and play with them. Unfortunately, when I got it, I think we only played like 3 to 5 times max. There were also PS2 games I used to buy as a kid, and a lot of the games I bought were typically not functioning properly, or I just suck at the game and completely clueless of what to do (Those games were pretty cheap back then actually, so at least I didn't lose a lot of money compared to the games we buy nowadays).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Souvillaine In reply to TaintedArtisan [2019-07-08 17:16:22 +0000 UTC]

I too bought Garry's mod with high hopes of spending and enjoying a lot of time with it, but I ended up never knowing what I should do with it ^v^

Well I'm glad you didn't waste much money on those old games. That's why I tend to buy physical copies nowadays whenever possible, so you can sell it back if you got bored of a certain game. Hope you continue not buying bad games anymore

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TaintedArtisan In reply to Souvillaine [2019-07-08 19:25:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's a smart move. But copies but I feel like having a copy instead of the original may have a greater risk of being poor quality (But it depends).
I don't really buy games as often as I used to anymore actually I always plan on buying a game, but I end up forgetting or just backing out when I lose interest XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Souvillaine In reply to TaintedArtisan [2019-07-10 13:19:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh you must have misunderstood the term copy there. On DVDs or Blue Rays, they are just a volume for the content. The movies or games are copied over there without any loss of data and don't require any internet connection usually. Physical copy is just the term used to describe the product in a physical form.

I think you did a great job with the drawing. The dull purple contrasts really well with the gold and the aesthetic is definitely my favourite part.

One thing that now sticks out a little, that I didn't notice when you showed the drawing to me, is that her clothes and adornments seem to be in a different style compared to her scales. The scales seemingly have outlines whereas the crown, pelt etc don't. It's not a huge deal and I still think you did a wonderful job with the character sheet!
