Created in a lab by both Oil Slick and Knockout, Motormaster was designed to oppose and rival Optimus Prime. Although Motormaster is physically similar to Optimus Prime in many ways, he lacks the wisdom of the Matrix of Leadership, an item that he covets.

Upons his introduction to the Stunticons, Motormaster proclaimed himself leader of the splinter faction in his booming, hollow voice. Most of the Stunticons obey Motormaster out of fear rather than respect because he is violent and merciless. Even though he is immensely strong and durable, his greatest weakness is the disloyalty he inspires in those under his command, especially Breakdown, who challenges his position of leadership.

Although he is arrogant and vain, Motormaster is loyal to Oil Slick, whom he views as a father figure. While he holds Oil Slick in high esteem, he deeply resents Knockout, who feels that Motormaster is nothing but a cheap knockoff of the Autobot leader.
