Description Here's another commission I did for Tantantanuki , on the Christmas of 2010.

The theme, as you can see, was Star Fox.

SOME BACKGROUND ON STAR FOX:

For those of you unfamiliar with the Star Fox characters or brand, Star Fox was originally a 3D rail shooter for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, released in Japan in 1993.

In Star Fox, you played as an Arwing (read: starfighter) pilot called Fox McCloud (an anthorpomorphic fox, appropriately enough), who leads a squadron of three other pilots (collectively referred to as "Star Fox") against the forces of the evil emperor Andross, who has declared war on the peaceful Lylat System. Star Fox's critical and commercial success quickly turned it into a franchise, which included titles like Star Fox 64, Star Fox Adventures (which saw the advent of Krystal), Star Fox Assault, and Star Fox Command, among others.

The popularity of the Star Fox series cannot be solely attributed to its solid library of games, though. It also has a large cast of distinctive, colourful anthropomorphic characters with equally colourful appearances and personalities.

They have many fans and admirers.

Tantantanuki is one of them.

Hence "Heroes of the Lylat System".

SOME BACKGROUND ON THE PIC:

I've never drawn any Star Fox characters before, so I had to conduct a great deal of research and experimentation before I settled on the above composition.
Still, the end result was worth it.
Slapdash toning and bad hand rendering aside, "Heroes of the Lylat System" is one of my best fan art pictures yet. I feel it has more visual clarity than some of my older works, and adequately captures the essence of the Star Fox characters and environment they inhabit.

Speaking of which...

SOME BACKGROUND ON THE PIC'S PEEPS:

From left to right, the "Heroes of the Lylat System" are:

1) Peppy Hare (Fox's mentor, and a former wingmate of Fox's deceased father, James McCloud)
2) Slippy Toad (Fox's friend and first wingmate. The resident inventor and engineer of the Star Fox team.)
3) Krystal (Sole survivor of the planet Cerinia. Accepted into team Star Fox after Fox rescued her from captivity on Dinosaur Planet. Has telepathic powers.)
4) Fox McCloud (Current leader of team Star Fox, and an ace Arwing pilot and soldier. Has a thing for Krystal.)
5) Falco Lombardi (A friend and rival of Fox. Also a very skilled Arwing pilot, but frequently operates seperately from team Star Fox.)
6) ROB 64 (The mechanical overseer and operator of team Star Fox's mothership, the Great Fox.)
7) General Pepper (Commander of the Cornerian Defense Force. Frequently hires team Star Fox to assist the CDF, and often personally oversees their missions.)

and looming over them is

8) Andross (The nemesis of team Star Fox. Self-proclaimed emperor of the Lylat System. A former Cornerian geneticist twisted by his desire for power and numerous self-inflicted genetic experiments. Directly responsible for the death of Fox's father. Has tried to conquer the Lylat System numerous times, only to be stopped every time by Fox and his companions.)

WRAPPING UP...:

When drawing the characters for "Heroes of the Lylat System", I used their designs from Star Fox Assault, since they were easy to find online, and the most polished versions available.
The one exception to this rule is Andross, because I preferred his design in the original 1993 Star Fox game to any of the later designs in Star Fox 64 and onwards. To me, Andross' old 3D polygon design always seemed more menacing and alien than his ape-head design, which in my eyes looked a little goofy and absurd. This is just a personal preference, however, and I have no desire to offend fans of the simian Andross by excluding him here.

He was a menacing final boss in Star Fox Adventures. I'll admit that much

The background took some effort to correctly render, too. Each planet was painted digitally, but the backdrop of space is a significantly tweaked version of a real photo of a nebula, which I smothered with Photoshop filters until the last dregs of the original image ran out of air, stopped struggling, and expired.

Photoshop's good like that XD

Drawn/assassinated with Adobe Photoshop CS3 in just over a week.

Fox McCloud, Krystal, Slippy Toad, Peppy Hare, Falco, ROB, General Pepper, Andross and the Star Fox crest are all copyright (c) of Nintendo.

As is the Lylat System itself, I guess

My favorite part is Slippy high-fiving with his tongue! That's funny!

Now, I thought Falco is about as tall or maybe a little bit taller than Fox? He seems to be a bit too tall in relation to Fox..

Fel-Fisk In reply to TMystery [2011-09-21 22:49:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, Falco is six foot two, and fox is only five foot eight so~ I think my bro's gotten the proportioning right there XP

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

TMystery In reply to Fel-Fisk [2011-09-22 22:07:08 +0000 UTC]

To further help, I found this image: [link]

Fox is about 551 pixels tall - Falco is about 569 pixels tall.

551 1
_ = _
568 x
568x = 551
x = 1.03
So it seems like the Assault model has Fox and Falco having a very similar height

Fel-Fisk In reply to TMystery [2011-09-23 04:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Bare in mind, perspective must be taken into account, due to the fact that falco is further back, he would appear smaller than he actually is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

TMystery In reply to Fel-Fisk [2011-09-22 21:48:53 +0000 UTC]

That's six inches.. a half of a foot.

Using the Assault model, Falco is taller and does have bigger shoes. But using the proportions you mentioned...
5 2/3rds feet 1
_____ =
6 1/6th feet x
5.6667x = 6.1666667

x = 1.088 - So Falco should be 8% (almost 10%) taller than Fox

Your drawing has Fox be about 210 pixels tall (Measured to the top of his head, but not his ears). Falco is about 288 pixels tall (I'm excluding the tuft of hair at the top)

210 1
_ = _
288 x

210x = 288
x = 1.37

So in the picture Falco is 37% taller than Fox.

Fel-Fisk In reply to TMystery [2011-09-22 22:12:37 +0000 UTC]

... my drawing? no no no! this is my BROTHER'S drawing *that was for me for christmas~*. and if you look at pictures from the game, the height difference is larger then 10%, even if that is incorrect [link] , my brother probably didn't consider the fact that falco is slightly further back in the picture than fox, so just took the height he was at~

Plus, the shoes to kinda give a bit of extra height *thicker heels, doncha know~* And he's got all those head feathers that jut outta the top of his head, adding at least a foot.

Plus, my brother has never played a star fox game, so the height difference in the picture might be impacted by that factor.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TMystery In reply to Fel-Fisk [2011-09-22 22:26:42 +0000 UTC]

Okay, it is your brother's picture. Sorry about the confusion!
The emuparadise pic is the same picture that I used in the comparison in the post that began with the words "To further help, I found this image" but at a lower resolution.

I took the measurements to exclude Falco's head feathers and Fox's ears, but the shoes were included (since Falco's wearing them).

I used Microsoft Paint for Windows 7 to get the pixel measurements - You get the select tool and select the portion from the top of the head to the sole of the inner foot (the foot that is not in front), and you will see the pixel height and width of the selection in the bottom of the screen

Anyway, I've had problems with proportioning too! Some advice for your brother: it helps to try to get multiple pictures of the subject(s) so one gets a better sense of the height and other dimensions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fel-Fisk In reply to TMystery [2011-09-23 04:57:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, he's generally fine with proportion *much better than I am at any rate* This's just a one off thing~ And the point is if I didn't mind, it didn't really matter~ Seeing as the picture was for me~

SpaceBoy969 In reply to shiftael [2011-08-03 10:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, since you asked, Pepper's facepalming . A facepalm can have a number of connotations, but in Pepper's case it represents all three of the factors you mentioned. Yes, he's embarrassed, yes he's wondering what the hell he's doing here and yes, he's trying to pretend he isn't several feet away from a wacky rabbit high fiving a toad's tongue in midair . ROB's there for the General, though, so that's a plus

Andross really awesome here. I like that rainbow colored effect you put on him. The background is great.

SpaceBoy969 In reply to Kaeru-Hime-Chan [2011-07-09 13:45:13 +0000 UTC]

The rainbow effect is a simple trick, actually. If you have a copy of Adobe Photoshop, go into Filter -> Filter Gallery -> Stylise -> Glowing Edges, then play around a bit with Edge Width, Edge Brightness and Edge Smoothness.

You'll turn a plain old image into a funky lightshow in no time

Plus, you can overlay the funkified version over the old one to create the neon glowy line effect I used on Andross here.

Like I said, simple...but effective
