Description A commission for Tantantanuki’s 13th birthday. If you’ve ever seen her gallery, you’ll quickly deduce that she’s an aficionado of everything Sly Cooper related; hence, this picture.

“Fluctuat Nec Mergitur” roughly translates to “Beaten by the waves, it does not sink”, and is the motto of Paris, home of Sly Cooper. I felt it was an appropriate title for the artwork due to the location it depicts (Paris), and the events occurring within that location (ie: the Cooper gang’s battle with Clockwerk).

Why Clockwerk?
Well, out of all the villains in Sly’s extensive rogues gallery, Clockwerk has always been my favourite. He has the strongest connection to the Cooper clan (he hated them so much that he made himself immortal and hunted them for centuries), and to Sly himself (Clockwerk murdered Sly’s father).
No major villain before or since Clockwerk in the Sly trilogy has equaled or surpassed him. Clock-la was just a Clockwerk clone motivated by petty greed (rather than millennia-old loathing), and Dr. M. (though a challenging opponent with a grudge against Sly and his dad) just wasn’t as big, threatening or vengeful.

Plus, Clockwerk’s boss battle was HARD AS NAILS

Anyway, let me pitch “Fluctuat Nec Mergitur” to you:

It is six months after Sly 3.

One of Clockwerk’s living descendents has rebuilt Clockwerk’s hate chip (the source of his immortality), and reassembled his body. The leader of the Fiendish Five is back, and ready to exact bloody retribution on his mortal foe, Sly Cooper.

One small problem. He doesn’t know where Sly is.

The solution? Paris.

Clockwerk travelled to the city of lights once before, when he paid a friendly visit to the two last living Cooper raccoons. The son of his prey, that sniveling little brat who shot him down two years ago, was born in Paris, and has a soft spot for the place. He’ll come running when Clockwerk starts ripping it to pieces. Besides, even if the pathetic rat doesn’t show, Clockwerk has been dead for a while. He could use some exercise.

As it turns out, the last Cooper does show.

Sly Cooper was already on vacation in Paris with a couple of his old friends, “admiring” art at the Louvre on the night Clockwerk rained his vengeance down upon the capital of France. After returning the Mona Lisa to its rightful place, Sly, Bentley and Murray weighed their options.

There was no time to form an elaborate battle plan. Clockwerk’s humiliating defeat at the hands of Sly, combined with his already seething hatred of the Cooper clan, had increased his strength astronomically. He would destroy Paris in minutes.

Fleeing wasn’t an option. There are over ten million people in Paris, and Sly Cooper, in spite of his many well-cultivated faults, is neither heartless or a coward.

Backup was too far away, and Paris' power grid had already been blacked out by Clockwerk’s crushing assault. They couldn't call or radio anyone.

In the end, there was only one choice the original Cooper gang could make. They had fought Clockwerk before. They knew the deadly owl’s strengths, and his weaknesses. They were the best chance Paris had.

Stopping briefly at an old safehouse near Dmitri’s, the Cooper gang pick up some auxiliary gear and weapons, scale the tallest building nearby and looked on.
Entire districts of Paris are already burning under a hail of Clockwerk’s energy blasts.
Sly climbs up an aerial, and shouts a challenge. Immediately, impossibly, Clockwerk-several kilometers up in the air, far beyond earshot-breaks off his attack, and dives directly towards his most hated foes.

The Murray lets out a roar, and raises his fists.

Bentley arms a bomb, and plans like mad.

Sly raises his Cane, heirloom of the Cooper raccoons, symbol of his proud heritage, the same Cane he used to smash Clockwerk’s screaming face in all those years ago. He looks his father’s killer in the eye. In the scant seconds before the Cooper gang and their deadliest enemy clash for the last time, Sly Cooper, sole survivor of the Cooper clan, has time to think only one thing:

“God, I hope Carmelita doesn’t see me like this.”

Whew. Looks like I’m more of a Sly Raccoon fan than I’d care to admit

Drawn in Adobe Photoshop CS3, over one week. Sly, Bentley, Murray and Clockwerk were sketched by myself, but Paris is heavily based on tooti’s excellent photograph “Eiffel Tower”, which you can find here:

*Nag* Personally, even though I hate admit it, Clockwerk would win. He's said that the Coopers always found a way to beat him at least once. Perhaps the second go they weren't so lucky. It would be the same for Sly, Bently, and Murray, but I bet that Clockwerk wouldn't kill him this time, I bet he would try and brainwash him to be his metaphorical "son".

*Emerald* Basically, Clockwerk was smart enough to have probably made more weapons for this particular frame.

I like that idea, it would have been an interesting plot twist. It would seem like something Clockwerk would do, after all what better way to prove his superiority than by forcing the Cooper Clan's last living heir to serve his sworn enemy. And to have them refer to him as their father to add insult to injury! Why hasn't anyone written this story yet?!

And the Bentley and The Murray go on a quest to save Sly.

I loved this artwork, I saw you working on the early stages of it, and I was SOOO excited! Did you notice (this may just be the lighting, but..) clockwerk has a similar colour scheme to Neyla in this pic? Ya know, the purple limbs and head, blue body... it's probably just me -_-; You did an amazing job on the shading, and the city looks amazing (the colours, not just the build)

Hey! you forgot to mention that Clockwerk was copyright too!

lol for Paris being copyright to France XD

SpaceBoy969 In reply to The-Last-Dragon-Kni [2011-06-05 04:20:54 +0000 UTC]

She would, wouldn't she? Perhaps I'll have to make a sequel to "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" where Carmelita skydives at Clockwerk (while wearing the cocktail dress from Sly , no less) off the Eiffel tower and shoots him John Woo style with dual Shock pistols.

Now all I need is the spare time to sketch it...

She should, after all, maybe bentley throw his bombs into the holes her shock pistol creates in clockwerk's armor >w< But then she can explode at sly all she wants, considering they won the battle.

Clockwerk deserves to die.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fel-Fisk In reply to The-Last-Dragon-Kni [2011-06-03 23:04:54 +0000 UTC]

Correction, volcanoes are INCREDIBLY hot! They can destroy towns and cities if there's enough lava, plus they release mountains of poisonous gas and scolding hot ash. Lava MELTS metal. and acid doesn't technically 'eat' metal, it corrodes/dissolves it.

You may want to not e the fact that clockwerk is practically invincible unless his hate-chip is destroyed, plus, where the heck would you find a concentrated supply of acid big enough to melt CLockwerk in Paris I mean seriously, even if you could, Clockwerk is a very smart bird, luring him into such a place would be near impossible.

>_<; I'm such a nerd

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Last-Dragon-Kni In reply to Fel-Fisk [2011-06-03 23:08:10 +0000 UTC]

Valcanos are at Just over 1300 farenhight. You can get a camp fire hotter than that with gas and old wood.

So thats how you want to play is it?
Lava burns all in its path. Its not hot enough to melt. And Acid is a massive dehydrating agent. But it ose Eat metal.

Douse him in Hydro cloric and be done with it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fel-Fisk In reply to The-Last-Dragon-Kni [2011-06-03 23:30:58 +0000 UTC]

'Eat' isn't the scientific term dude, dissolve or intensively corrode would be more scientifically correct. Also, acid has no stomach, mouth or similar so eating is imposible for it .

Technically, volcanoes can reach temperatures from 700 to 2000 degrees celsius (which is 1292-3632 degrees Fahrenheit)

the average campfire is only 400-600 degrees celsius (752-1112 degrees Fahrenheit) Lava is definitely hot enough to melt steel, considering the lava in question is hot enough.

And all these facts are COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT BECAUSE CLOCKWERK IS RUDDY INVINCIBLE AS LONG AS HE'S GOT HIS HATE-CHIP IN!!!! HAVEN'T YOU PLAYED THE FIRST AND SECOND GAMES?!? I mean seriously.

'cloric' is actually spelt 'chloric' and hydrochloric is one word 0_0, and you mean 'does'

-_-; great, now I'm annoyed, thanks.

(I'm not trying to make you mad, I was just stating facts, and you tested my knowledge)
