Zutara: My Family Is My Life

(Zuko's POV)

Maybe hunting the Avatar makes me a monster or the villain of this piece. Maybe my quest to capture him is enough to label me as "evil" in the eyes of the world. Has anyone ever turned the tables...stopped looking at it through the Avatar's eyes and looked at it through mine? If they did...maybe they would understand.

I don't have a choice.

When a man is delivered an ultimatum he has two choices: Take it...or die. And in this case I wouldn't be the only one who'd die...in fact, knowing my father, I would be the one who -wouldn't- die. But Katara and Zhi? They would...undoubtedly they would.

That's why I'm here...on the opposite side of the world from them, hunting down a child. Not for my honor or my throne, it's too late for me to redeem and reclaim those in my father's eyes, but for my family. For the belief that if I succeed I can take them away from the palace...take them someplace where my father won't be able to touch them or us.

And if I fail, if I join the Avatar, then the price will be more then I could ever bear to pay...that's my father's assurance that I won't betray him. Katara and Zhi mean more to me then trying to salvage the pieces of my honor which are beyond repair in the first place.

If hunting the Avatar makes me a villain....if it makes me the enemy of the free world...and if that's what keeps my wife and baby alive...I can live with myself. I've given up too much already...I -refuse- to give up them also.

Oh look...AUs strike again for Zutara Eternity . This one is what I've dubbed "Arranged Marriage!AU" for lack of a better title at the moment. It's the overdone plot of Katara being forced to marry Zuko in an arranged marriage in a world where the Avatar hasn't been found yet. As you can see above eventually he -is- found...which opens a whole new kettle of fish. Add to this mix plenty of political intrigue, a feuding royal family, Zuko and Azula vying for power and the differences between their methods and Katara and Zuko actually falling in love with each other (which changes Zuko's priorities around -quite- a bit) and you've got something that either resembles a great political epic, a Shakespeare play or a Jane Austen novel.

The idea for the above scenario came to me when I was musing both on my story and on "Water Bending Scroll". I was thinking about Zuko's need to reclaim his honor and that was why he was so driven...and the idea started to hatch that maybe, instead of honor and a throne that pushed him on, it was something more personal and closer to his heart. That would probably make him -twice- as stubborn and determined in hunting Aang...scary as that thought is.

I know Katara isn't in the scene above...but I tried to put her in the picture on the table...though she looks like a depressed Jun...>.> It's the hair...Zhi is their baby daughter and first child. No matter what AU or timeline we put them in Zhi is -always- born deaf...and she can't hear through bending or anything. She's just deaf.

Either way I like this piece...I've got depth in it...and I've convinced myself that I -might- have a future actually being able to color with markers. Though I did nearly kill a couple of my orange and yellow ones on this piece...this drawing represents many, many layers of markers to get those colors in place.

And yes...the title is taken rather bluntly from "The Legend Of Zorro". I can't help it...I love that line...and I love that movie.

As always...don't flame...have no time for flame wars and I have a feeling that the rest of you guys are in the same boat I'm in.
