EL OH EL at the "Advice Carl: Now Pocket-sized"! Good lord, I don't even know what that is but it's HI-LAAARIOUS. And also, as always, the expressions of all the characters are brilliant! I can see them moving and alive in my head just by looking at the drawing. Either you are very talented or I am very high. (Probably the first one, seeing as though I don't do drugs)

Well, you're not the first person to say that, so I think the answer is clear.
You all are on drugs.

Some of the expressions in these are extraordinary. And I can actually see each individual character's movement. (A company like Disney would probably want to devour you with your drawings)
How do you maintain that professionalism? (Every single drawing of mine gets smudged etc, but yours-...They're clean...Perfect.) Unless, there is no secret, and you plainly use an eraser. XD

Oh wow haha thank you very much! A lot of what I draw I see in my head first and so I practically already see it on the paper. I also don't erase all that much and I've been trying recently to make my strokes more bold and to go with the idea even if I think it's too exaggerated. A lot of curves also help with the illusion of movement. I don't know...I mostly just draw lightly and then fill in when I like a line. You might also notice that a lot of my seemingly solid lines are actually a lot of little lines placed together. Also, if you're right-handed, work from the left side to the right in a drawing so as not to smudge it. If you must go back to a part in the picture, put a sheet of paper over the drawing so the oils on your skin get on the paper instead of on your drawing. Also, the oils in your hands and fingers make it harder to erase something.

Yes! I do realize that. It's very true. I find that every artist recommends Japanese drawing utensils. At least now I have another reassuring word. So, haha, I'll consider it. Yeah, in terms of supplies, my collection is limited. Pretty much all I use to draw are lead pencils. I know...it's pretty bad.
(P.S. I used your curve technique and it worked. XD)

Oh, I'm glad it did! You'll have to post some of your work!
Lead pencils meaning the wooden ones or do you at least have some mechanical? Animation has gotten me into using wooden pencils again but whenever I sketch, it's mechanical. Too much sharpening...slows things down.

Sorry, haha, I suppose I was a bit vague there. Yeah, what I meant was I still use standard HB pencils; mechanical or the wooden ones. None of the fancy stuff artists generally have. Though most often I use mechanical pencils. I guess that's because I'm lazy, much how you describe it; too much sharpening. XD
And I would post some of my new work, though it's all sketchy, and not really worth seeing. But the gestures...they are becoming more noticeable, especially with your help.

Oh, that's good to hear! I recommend sketching real people as well, just taking time to watch them move or sit, see where they're applying the weight. And of course, do this without them noticing. That's how you get some candid and genuine stuff.

AymsterSilver In reply to squonkhunter [2012-06-28 13:26:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, about that. I have a question: even in animation class, do they force you to pay attention to realism, and make you sketch people realistically? Or do they pay more attention to things like gesture drawings?

squonkhunter In reply to AymsterSilver [2012-06-28 20:47:15 +0000 UTC]
Photo realism is not really practiced at all, but gesture drawings, certainly, as well as constructive drawing. Exaggeration is also encouraged. I might post some of my sketches from class so you can get an idea.

Yes, please do. I'd love to see them.
But yes, I'm surprised they don't pay much attention to photo realism. That makes my childhood a lie. Haha. XD

Haha well photo realism can only take you so far. Unfortunately a lot of photo realists focus on the 2D images and animation is trying to get you to focus on the 2D portrayal of a 3D image, you understand? That's what constructive drawing is. Let's say you drew the eye line on a face. In constructive drawing, you are to continue that line all the way around the back of the head, even though you never see the back in this particular drawing. What this does is give you the proper curve of the eye as it reaches the edge of viewing, because sometimes this curve is more extreme than you'd originally thought, and it can flatten the image if you don't do this ugh much as I am an English major, I communicate the best visually. Let me draw it for you in the dA muro.

Haha yeah, I was considering animating him for my summer school project so I made him cartoony. I finally decided to go with Rem.

I like Peter Gabriel even more than I like him! LOL

True dat, big personalities. Ach, I love Peter Gabriel. He's my favorite living person on the planet.
Haha Rem is REALLY fun to animate. Any wacky, exaggerated pose I want to go with is never pushing it too far with him. He's a perfect subject for something fun and crazy, which is what Aardman will be looking for.

Does Papag love the Hoatzins as well?
Also Ecrus cannot rock the 70s look. No one ever did.

Haha the 1970s were an interesting time, as far as fashion goes. I decided against giving him sideburns.
Ah, hoatzins look beautiful! He loves any bird he can find.

He probably also doesn't love condors very much. You know, they repel predators by throwing up on them. Considering they eat the carcasses of dead animals, it's mostly half-digested rotting meat.

While simple looking, the clothing always fits nicely into the overall feel of the pictures. Plus I'm a sucker for giant hats.

Haha I had just drawn that picture and my girlfriend likes to voice my sketchbook sometimes, so she pointed to each and said that and I thought it was funny enough to write down. She's also the one who added "You didn't take notes" to the latest HMS comic I did.
