Was Papageno  supposed to be part bird, or did they call him a birdman because he catches birds, like we call someone who catches fish a fisherman

squonkhunter In reply to grazatt [2014-12-21 21:06:35 +0000 UTC]

He's supposed to be dressed as a bird and he is also a bird catcher, but no, he is not biologically part bird. XD

Yeah, I think that cartoon was the result of people thinking they needed to dumb something down to make kids like it

squonkhunter In reply to grazatt [2015-01-13 21:18:58 +0000 UTC]

That is true. Fun fact: The Magic Flute is actually Schikaneder's dumbed down version of Mozart's ideas and a German fairy tale in order for the common people to like it.

Oooooooh! He's so cute! I love how his hair looks like ruffled feathers! This is...actually, incredibly similar to how I tend to imagine him and--oh--

ohgosh
I just noticed the feathers in his hair
I can't

He is just SO CUTE. I can barely restrain my inner fangirl just LOOK AT HIM.

I see in the comments you mention Saami influence and Vietnamese opera, neither of which I know anything about, but I do love the blend of whimsical (the diamond patterned fabric, the dagged hem of his tunic, the plumage...eee, the plumage) while still making it look as if he, you know, lives in the woods and catches birds for a living. The coat originally put me in mind of a 1400s doublet (which I found fitting because I usually imagine Papageno in a Robin Hood hat for...reasons), while the diamond pattern had me thinking of commedia dell'arte, which I also felt was appropriate since he's a comic relief character. And the color palette is just perfect.

I love his design so much.

(Just...answer me one question. It's been nagging at me. Are Papageno and Cassie still going to be a thing in Rathuni? I need to come to terms with my expectations sooner rather than later. Also, I feel like it's been a while since you drew Jez. She still around?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to violet-raincrow [2014-07-01 00:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Cassie is no longer a character, she has kind of been combined with Jez to create a younger version of Jez (but don't tell anyone; I like the dynamic of Rem being bested by a twelve-year-old rather than another adult. It also forces him to be more responsible and watch his language, which is part of his character arc, in coming to care for someone). But Papageno is not in Rathuni. He gets to be a part of Tamino and the Magic Flute, though, so you will indeed see him in action in a comic.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like the design! Yes commedia dell'arte is definitely an influence, and I used to put Papageno in a Robin Hood hat but I've been putting Rigoletto in one, so it's kind of Rigoletto's thing for me. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

violet-raincrow In reply to squonkhunter [2014-07-01 02:01:32 +0000 UTC]

That's probably why I imagine Papageno in the Robin Hood hat, then.

I kind of figured Papageno wasn't going to be in Rathuni when you announced Tamino and the Magic Flute, but I've been curious as hell about Cassie's fate since probably this time last year.

squonkhunter In reply to violet-raincrow [2014-07-01 07:55:27 +0000 UTC]

Lol thank you! But yeah, the dynamic between Rem and Jez works so much better now, because just the presence of a kid encourages him to be a better person, which is something adult Jez was never really giving him. He always acted like a kid around her but when an actual kid is present, there's a certain level of adultness that he has to take on, if you know what I mean.

squonkhunter In reply to violet-raincrow [2014-07-02 06:28:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've written out some sample dialogue between them and I love it more than anything I ever had between the characters before. Jez feels like she has a lot more depth too, and the way they banter feels a lot more natural.
Of course, Rathuni will be coming out after Tamino and the Magic Flute and probably after Wormsblood as well, but it will be published mainly online to be viewed in its entirety. If things go well, I'll be able to sell hard copies of it with sketches I've never posted online.

I would totally "squee" but I promised myself I wouldn't turn into an obnoxious "fan-girl". XD  My, my~  Isn't he quite the handsome little bird catcher~  The outfit is so wonderfully designed and you've captured the character beautifully; his optimistic disposition and everything.  I sometimes wonder whether you were inspired by some Papagenos you've seen live, etc.

squonkhunter In reply to AymsterSilver [2014-06-22 20:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Mostly Hermann Prey and Manfred Hemm, I must say.
And I listened to a lot of Saami yoiks while drawing and coloring him so...sort of that love of the land and nature came out, I suppose. I kept in mind that he made all his clothing himself, so what would he do to decorate himself and things like that.
Also, as you recall, his face is an old design of mine, with a couple years to improve it, so I need to take some time to fully sketch out the other characters and get to know them from every angle as well.
But thank you! And lol you don't have to admit your squees if they happen. XD

I'll have to watch those two playing the role.  After seeing them in costume, I definitely know you didn't get your costume inspiration from them.  Their costumes oddly remind me of Peter Pan.

i1.ytimg.com/vi/i2RG7u7tYvE/0.…

I think you should have been their costume designer.

Saami Joik?  I had no idea you were into indigenous Scandinavian culture!  When did that obsession arise?

And yes, I recall seeing Papageno in your earlier drawings.  Though I believe he's changed quite a lot since then.

squonkhunter In reply to AymsterSilver [2014-06-25 23:38:42 +0000 UTC]

They're my favorites as far as understanding the character of Papageno. Prey can even do it without a costume! www.youtube.com/watch?v=tENJ2B…
He embodies so much of the spirit of Papageno, it's beautiful.

Lol thank you so much for saying so. And yus, I only recently discovered Saami Joik while getting pissed about the soundtrack for Frozen and looking into the music they supposedly took inspiration from, then threw to the wind for a generic, ugly Broadway sound sung in the ever-hideous mid voice. And please...do at least TRY to hit a few notes, especially if you're going to hold them out that long. Anyway. I have been indulging in Saami Joik and Mongolian chants to wash my ears of that half baked movie.

Yes, Papageno has changed quite a bit, but his face is essentially the same. I don't know. I always sort of pictured him that way.

AymsterSilver In reply to squonkhunter [2014-06-30 00:21:57 +0000 UTC]

Hermann Prey is wonderful and so cute.  His voice is especially wonderful.  Also, I'm wondering where this video is from~

Long ago, when I was a kid, I had seen an Opera Atelier adaptation of The Magic Flute (Opera Atelier is a company in Toronto).  I remember Olivier Laquerre played Papageno and I had never seen an opera singer who could act as well as he could sing.  He will probably always be the Papageno I imagine (until I envision your Papageno in your comics~~).  It's just amazing how some lesser known artists and popular artists can stand out and inspire you to create characters based off their interpretations.

Don't even get me started on the Frozen soundtrack...  I remember thinking that section of the opening song sounded a little more "South African" than "Norse".   You're correct.  When I heard the song, "Let it Go" for the first time I couldn't help noticing that Idina Menzel is harshly straining her voice to reach the high notes.  It's a very flat, ugly sound.  Yes, the music is "showy" and too "pop-like" for my taste.  It's obvious Disney was trying to appeal to a much larger demographic.   What happened to the simple movies they used to produce, like Brad Bird's "Ratatouille"?...I suppose the average domestic American household can't relate to "French Culture" or anything not completely Americanized...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to AymsterSilver [2014-06-30 04:17:33 +0000 UTC]

Well the opening song for Frozen was a combination of a Saami chant issuing the spirit of the story to aid them and using sounds instead of words, with a Dutch Christmas hymn planted on top of it. So it's not really South African, it's just a side of European nomadic tradition we haven't heard, but the Christmas song was a little odd to just splice on top of there.

Oh don't get me wrong, Ratatouille is extremely popular here, but with Frozen they're still trying to do their princess movies but somehow move in a more feminist direction (even though they don't). It's just...asinine. I don't know why the Disney company is so stuck in this tradition. Because girls sell? I don't know. But I agree, the soundtrack is just awful.

Olivier Laquerre, eh? If you find any links of him send them over, though I know a lot of my favorite opera singers aren't on youtube either, like Leon Williams. I saw him live twice (and he's actually played Papageno though I never got to see it) and he has nothing on youtube.

AymsterSilver In reply to squonkhunter [2014-07-01 18:58:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.  That's interesting.  I wasn't aware that Chris appropriated authentic Dutch songs.  I thought he'd just emulate the style (even if it was badly emulated).  It's kind of cheap.  When Berlioz appropriated in Dies Irae in "Symphonie Fantastique" he at least added some bulk to it. Same with Mozart and his variations in "Ah vous dirais-je, maman"... But...the Frozen opening song is just...a disappointment.

I don't really mind that they're going in this direction with female characters.  At least it opens up opportunities for female actors in the future.  The only thing that bugs me is that these movies with these types of characters are still mainly marketed to the female populace and not both.  Yes, girls sell.  They've seen that statistically the women in relationships are now choosing the movies as opposed to what men used to do a couple of years back.  So...it's no wonder that modern movies are so feminine.  Though I still find some of these movies "stereotypically girly".

That's too bad about Leon Williams.  I'll try to see if I can find something with Olivier, but I somehow doubt I'd find anything Papageno-ish.  I think I found a clip of him playing Medusa once in Persée, but it was hard to come by. Haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to AymsterSilver [2014-07-01 19:30:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's just copy-pasted. Real musicians do variations, like Beethoven riffing on Schiller's Ode to Joy. But the popular music scene has become so lazy these days.

I didn't find it feminist, to be honest. The main character still gets with a man, the "villain" still ends up single, they were young, beautiful, and thin and wore dresses, and they still inspire girls to be young, thin, and beautiful. Not all girls are like that. As a kid, I remember identifying mostly with the side characters because there was nothing of me in these girls. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

LOL Medusa? Nice.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AymsterSilver In reply to squonkhunter [2014-07-02 23:35:42 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly my point. The girls in these movies are still too barbie-like to identify with.   Though at least female roles in general are becoming more interesting little by little.  I guess it's just the first couple of steps.

And yeah~  Though when I saw it live it was way funnier...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to AymsterSilver [2014-07-03 03:04:30 +0000 UTC]

LOL sounds like it! And yeah, it's all marketing. The characters are built to look like dolls, so they can sell the dolls more easily. I appreciate the little steps, but they're still too little. All the women look alike in Frozen because they used the same model (I mean, look at their mom???) and the creator had some sexist remarks about how women should always be portrayed as beautiful and some bull shit like that.
