Description I fell in love with this image [link]

the moment I saw it. I think it was the way the sleeve of the gown had slid so innocently from her shoulder. For some reason, images of Paris and springtime came to mind and when painting, of -course- it had to be in morning light.

I want to thank for allowing me the chance to paint this particular piece. There are a large number of his works that are worthy of a great deal of attention.. but it was the simplicity of this one that caught my eye. If you find time, you might want to wander over to his gallery. [link]

It's worth the look

Painter 8 oils. Original canvas is roughly 4000X4000X300 ppi

Aww, thank you so much ( for the front page comment as well! )

No, I've not posted much in a good long while. My physical pain levels got to a point where I was simply incapable of making the range of motion needed in order to paint, even digitally. Lately though I've been slowly recovering the strength I had lost and have picked it back up.

I'm currently working on three paintings at the moment. One is a private gift commission... very intense and personal stuff going on there.

The other is a gift for a friend of my son. It's a painting of Pyramid Head, of all things.

The last is a pet portrait for someone who has waited a good long time for it... So I should have at least a couple more to hand up here soonish

I'm really glad you stopped by! I love the work you do. I get so much inspiration from the scene sets you take. The nature and woods shots are all simply wonderful. All of your stock is, to be honest. Thanks for sharing it!

Always willing to be an inspiration.
The work you're planning sounds great!
Sorry to hear you are still having such pain. Put the brush up your nose and paint that way. Then there's always the butt method. Haven't tried it but my gay friend swears by it. Maybe it's not for me?

Stacey73 In reply to Wicasa-stock [2008-02-28 23:24:21 +0000 UTC]

Nah, the wiggle factor required for the butt method proves to be something of a hindrance when one has chronic pain.. also the fact that any time a bare ass is wiggled in this household very little by way of painting gets accomplished. I WILL keep it in mind for Kink Night though, much obliged.

The nose might work.. At least until I have to sneeze or somesuch other annoying bodily function. The human body really IS a most undignified means of conveyance, no?

Hey thanks

I must say, you've an incredibly eclectic gallery going on yourself! I particularly like your tattoo work ( Koi tattoo in particular) and I have to say I think 'heroine, she said' is my favorite traditional work of yours.

I love seeing artists branch out like that. I have difficultly doing so personally, so I suppose it makes me appreciate the effort it takes to make it work. Well done

Are you sure this is a painting? I thougt it was a photograph. Marvellous!

Stacey73 In reply to Julemus [2008-01-01 16:04:14 +0000 UTC]

aww thanks

Sadly the photo that was my inspiration was removed when the photographer left DA for another venue so there is nothing to compare it to now, which saddens me as they are actually quite different. Ahh well. It really -was- a lovely photo.

As to your question, I have only just recently returned to painting again. I was forced to stop for a while due to pain and physical issues. Now that I am slowly getting better, I've picked my digital paintbrush back up and have begun once more.

I wont ever be able to return to real world oils, but I've become comfortable enough in digital for that to be okay now. I miss it, but I -am- happy to be painting, therefore I shall take what I can get

I absolutely -love- your work, by the way. I've -never- gotten soft pastels to behave so well in my entire life. Simply amazing stuff!

Sorry that you had to stop painting, but nice to hear, that you are better now and have started painting again. I have never tried airbrushing. It seems very complicated - and expensive - to me. I really admire you work. You are a great artist.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stacey73 In reply to Julemus [2008-01-01 17:46:36 +0000 UTC]

I confess to having never tried air brushing either

I use a computer program called Painter 10.. It's a digital program designed to mimic traditional media.. It does it very well, too might I add So all of my painting is done right on my computer now, rather than canvas.

If you're curious, you can look it over at corel.com. I pretty much always use the Oils in the pack, though I've occasionally added a 'chalk' variant in with the oils here and there as well. That's the great part about digital, I think. I'd -never- try something like that with real oils!

I would -love- to try to get the look you achieved with your Tibetan boy painting on velvet ( I think it was velvet, at any rate) -That- was incredibly well done!

And thank you. It's very nice to be able to paint again and as I admire your work a great deal, I take your appreciation of my own as a very high compliment.

I am very much looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Julemus In reply to Stacey73 [2008-01-01 20:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, Stacey, sorry that I have misunderstood something, but that doesn't make your drawing less beautiful. I have tried digital painting myself, but given it up because I prefer the real stuff. However, when I see your marvellous work, I could be attempted to try it again. I used a programm that was installed in my tablet. The programme was not very advanced. Do you use a tablet yourself or do you paint with your mouse?
I doubt that you can achieve the same results as that of my velour paintings on your computer, because the velour paper behaves in a special way. I am very fond of soft pastels and think they are easy to handle.
I'am very happy that you like my pastel work. I have been on the lazy side recently, but I have laid my pencil ready to sketch my next project which I think will be a challange to me, as the photograph I'll draw after, is of poor quality.
I appreciate your attention.

Stacey73 In reply to Julemus [2008-01-02 00:27:00 +0000 UTC]

Aww, no apology necessary Re-reading my post, it's actually somewhat vague as to method, and therefore very easy to misinterpret. The responsibility therefore resides with me, my apologies.

Before switching to digital painting, I used good old oils and canvas so finding a program that permitted me to get the look I was accustomed to was very important to me. I had tried painting with Photoshop the way many artists on DA do, but I simply can NOT make it behave for me where painting is concerned.

It was through the suggestion of a one time friend, that I try the program titled "Painter" and while it took me a good while to come to terms with how it behaves, I confess to now being -very- happy with it. It is relatively easy to learn (which was important, as making the switch was very painful for me. I loved my oils and didn't want to struggle with a program just to paint) and really did mimic my traditional media quite well.

I do use a tablet and would very strongly recommend others do so as well. It makes switching over ( or even between ) medias much less counter intuitive and is much easier on the hand, and arm than a mouse. You just cant get the same level of control with a mouse as you can when you use a tablet.

As for the velour paper, the program 'ainter' actually does let you create a 'canvas' texture and effects based on scans of real world media and papers. This means you can scan in your velour and with a little adjusting, create the same texturing that you would achieve in real life. The primary difference would be that the control would come from the brushes, rather than the 'canvas'. Meaning that by adjusting the flow and value of your paint as well as the impasto effect it creates when it comes off the brush, will interact with the scanned information of the paper to re-create the look of the real life painting.

It might not be exactly the same, granted.. But it would be very interesting to see it tried

If you're interested in trying digital painting again, the I cannot recommend Painter highly enough. There is simply no other program out there that can do what it does. As accustomed as we are to our real media, making that switch can be daunting, but now that I've found my stride with it, I can honestly say I adore it. I personally would be highly interested to see what you make with it. It has a very wide range of media it covers, everything from water colors, to soft pastels, to oils to acrylics to charcoal to simple pencils.

I would be quite happy to help you figure it out if you would like to try it. As a matter of fact, I think they still allow you to download a trial version to see if you like it or not for free. It 'times out' (stops working) after 15 to 30 days, if I remember correctly which should be sufficient to get a basic, general idea as to whether or not you find it interesting. Give it try

And if your wonderful 'Rabbit in our Garden' creation is anything to go by on how you work with photographic reference, then I don't seen how it could turn out as anything other than outstanding ( that was a -truly- wonderful piece!) I do understand the frustration of working with small or low quality reference material though. Homage to a Pearl took me a very long time to complete because (Physical pain notwithstanding) my images were so very small to begin with. Still, I have the utmost faith that you will do it justice.

Thanks a lot, Stacey, for your kind advice. I will give it a try when I'am ready with the work a have planned in the near future. However, I'll have to invest in another tablet which is more stable than that I have now and which was a cheap one. What type of table are do you use?
If you don't mind, I will revert to you when I need help.

You're most welcome

I'd be quite happy to help out in any way that I can and you are always free to drop me a line whenever you need a hand with something. If I dont know the answer personally, I'm pretty sure I can find it in at least one of the sites I frequent so one way or another, your questions will get answered

As for tablets, I use a Wacom tablet personally. The active area is 10 by 12 inches and the tablet overall is around 14 inches by 18. It's a bit of a monster in size, to be honest. I was expecting something a little smaller when I ordered it, but now that I've gotten used to it, I'm comfortable using it. It cost around 500 dollars at the time, but I believe the prices have since dropped quite a bit.

It's never given me any trouble though, and that alone is worth it in my opinion as I am one of those people that just want the tools to -work- I don't want to have to learn brain surgery to work with them

I'm pleased you will be giving it a try I think you'll enjoy it a fair bit, actually

Hey thanks

Though to be fair, I only painted it. The image itself began life as a truly lovely photograph by a talented photographer. Without his eye to catch the shot, the image wouldn't be here

Gota give credit where its due, no?

Speaking of which!

You've got some incredibly cool design work going on in your gallery! Loved that gold dragon..wasn't expecting it to pop up larger than life when I finally managed to hit 'download' correctly ( sorry about that ) and loved that it did. It let me get in there and really take a look at what you had going on. You've got something there in your shirt designs. I hope you pursue it!
