Starlene — Discussing Javerts

Description Oh yes, more doodles. Maybe I'll regain my ability to do finished work one day.

On the upper left, a little moment from the Finnish/Swedish Les Mis again - once, when taking his hat off to bow Valjean, that actually happened to Javert.
Upper right, my friend ~VinyaYY discusses differences in my and Norm Lewis's portrayals of Javert. (Hope you're satisfied with your hairdo, Vilma. If not, don't complain to me.)
Down, Finnish Enjolras. He's quite the master of waving that flag, it's always so fast it almost looks silly.

Les Mis is not mine, even though I'm doing so much fanart of it it's harmful to my health.
Seen the Finnish/Swedish cast singing One Day More yet?

I don't think we have colour guards in the Nordic Countries... But who knows, someone always has to be the first.

Heh, yeah. Twirling flags and such to music. It's an epic extracurricular from what I've seen. (Never did it myself, but occasionally some of their routines made it into the school talent show.)

Southern00Belle [2011-05-19 19:02:04 +0000 UTC]

I was spending a bit of time thinking about you and your friends conversation here the other day.

Okay, so I'm assuming you're the one holding the picture, because the other person is addressing "Starlene", so if you're the speaker, that means you're addressing yourself using a combination of first and third person, and you're also berating yourself for liking who you do, which would mean you have some internal issues you really need to sort out.

So I'm going to assume you're holding the picture, and your friend is the one speaking. But if that's the case, why is your friend insulting your choice, and why are you even holding that picture anyway? Did you draw it? I'm assuming you did, because you're holding it out to her, as if to show it to her. If she had drawn it and given it to you, you would be holding it facing inward, so you could see it. The way you're holding the paper, and your face, implies you already know what's on it.

So if you're showing off your lovely little doodle to your friend, how exactly did the conversation turn to "'My Javert is awesome and yours sucks because I said so." Did you just run up to her and be like "OH DARLING FRIEND OF MINE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS PICTURE I DREW" and then did she turn around dramatically and say "Oy. Get that out of my face, it's lame."
Of course, I don't know why she would say that, because she seems to be lobbying for Norm Lewis's Javert, and though I'm not good with details, it looks like you're holding a picture of Norm Lewis.

Is she insulting the way you drew Norm Lewis? If she is, why did she feel the need to insult your Javert while she was at it- who brought up your Javert, or could she just not pass up the chance to insult yours- no matter how obscure and out of place the insult is? If that's the case, why is your friend so mean?

*grabs your shoulders and shakes them* CONTEXT, STARLENE. I NEED CONTEXT.

I believe you've just raised this day to the ideal level of bizarre. I think I'll sleep well tonight. It was delightful getting such an insightful comment - I'm rather glad my art makes people think!

Now let's see if I have anything to answer...

"Did you just run up to her and be like 'OH DARLING FRIEND OF MINE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS PICTURE I DREW' and then did she turn around dramatically and say 'Oy. Get that out of my face, it's lame.'" - You pretty much said what I wanted to say with the picture in this sentence. Vilma thinks my Javert is lame compared to Norm Lewis. Insulting people at random... That's just one of her many talents.
Too bad if the Javert on the paper I'm holding came out as Norm Lewis-ish though - I meant to make him ugly grandpa-ish actually.

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-19 19:29:16 +0000 UTC]

If the case is that you were trying to draw an ugly grandpaish Javert, then who brought up Norm Lewis?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starlene In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-05-20 06:01:49 +0000 UTC]

Vilma. She had just seen the DVD and apparently liked Lewis quite a lot on it - so of course it was upsetting to her to see I only draw less-than-awesome ugly grandpas.

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-20 06:29:41 +0000 UTC]

And so your friend is just going out of the way to insult your ugly grandpas? That isn't nice. You should tell her it's mean.

You know, maybe I should start analyzing more pictures like this. It's been quite the brain exercise, and I get to test my logic.

Yes, but then I totally picked it apart. Sorry about that.

If it's any consolation for me picking it apart, your Les Mis in six character was my desktop background for two months, and even though the kids at my school teased me about it, I still refused to change it.

Aw. AW. AW. Thanks so much! I had no idea someone liked my art enough to actually see it every day when they open their computer! That's so sweet of you!
Too bad people teased you about it though. Les Mis is serious business. No one should tease anyone about it!

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-20 18:44:03 +0000 UTC]

I really, really love that picture. I got the clay to sculpt it just the other day, but I'm going to ask my friend Sam to come help, because she is way more artistic than I am, and I don' want to screw it up.

The kids at my school always did tease me about Les Mis until one point about a month ago, they called Fantine "Fantuna", and I told them to knock it off because I wasn't asking them to like Les Mis or even to give it a chance, but just to respect that I loved it, because it was very important to me, only I started crying after "important" and so then I just sat there for about five minutes crying, which made them feel really bad, and since then they've left it alone completely.

Can't wait to see what you and your friend can come up with!

Oh, that is so sad. I really can't understand what their problem is! Poor you - too bad it had to go as far as it did before it ended, but good that it ended after all!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-20 19:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Me too. We're going to have to change it a little, because we're both beginning sculpters and there is an extreme amount of motion in your picture, but we'll figure something out.

About three weeks before I told them to knock it off, I had been reading with my computer open in front of me, and your picture was up on it, and one of them came over, and changed the plot of Les Mis, but since he couldn't actually name any of the characters, he just pointed to your picture to indicate who he was talking about, and apparently now the plot revolves around Javert, who is a college student who just wants to go to Chuckie Cheese and eat pizza and play games, but he doesn't want to go alone, and his two best friends, Eponine and Marius are too busy to go, so he invites the popular kids, Valjean, Cosette, and Enjolras, but they just laugh at him and try to set up all sorts of traps to stop him from getting to his goal.
So yes, I am extremely glad they'll leave it alone now, just because I don't have to deal with crap like above now.

Starlene In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-05-20 19:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Heck - I should do a sculpture of it myself, too! I've done my fair share of sculpting in art school but it's always pottery, pottery, pottery, animals, pottery - wonder if I would have the talent for sculpting people! Hmm, too bad art school is closed for summer...

I feel so bad for you! And there are so many things I would like to say to losers like that, losers that use my picture as a tool of bullying others, none of them too pleasant...

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-20 19:40:00 +0000 UTC]

You should, yours would probably be really really good.

I don't they really knew how important Les Mis is to me. I mean, these are the kind of guys who spend all their time either online or playing video games, and so they're not used to teenage girls who are hormone casseroles, and will burst into tears if you say the wrong thing. I mean, Les Miserables just so happens to be my life. I can take good hearted teasing at it, as long as it's from people who truly do love the material. Those guys don't know anything about Les Mis and don't even bother learning...

Starlene In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-05-20 20:05:24 +0000 UTC]

Summer vacation activity: get some Play-Doh!

I can understand that very well. Les Mis is pretty much my life too. I've, luckily, never had to really fight for the right to love it (though it's kind of creepy how some people talk of it almost if it were my boyfriend...). Some of my friends can't really get what the fuss is about, but they've seen it and appreciate it on some level (and the one who rolls her eyes the loudest is also closest to me, so I can take that) - and probably think I'm so deep in it they can't drag me out anymore...
But yeah, if you don't know anything about it, there's no need to bother opening your mouth to talk trash about it, neither.

And now I have to be a horrible person and brag a little since I can't keep this inside no more: I'm getting to interview an extra from the Finnish professional Les Mis. Results is LesMisClub sometimes soon. He has some hilarious stories of what's it like working in the show!

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-20 20:23:40 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes. You get some Play-Doh!

Outside of those brats at school, the only problem I've encountered in the fanbase is a few hipster fans who act like because I'm fairly new to the fanbase I could never love it as much as them and I must be one of those people who just jumped on the bandwagon, probably after Nick Jonas or whatever. I really don't get that though, because I have read the entire unabridged book, and I've been in the fanbase for over a year, and I never did falter in it. I mean, if someone called me a bandwagoner over Wicked, I wouldn't care, because I'm still getting into Wicked, and one time a girl actually did call me a fake POTO fan, but I didn't care, because I don't even like Phantom. But Les Mis is the one thing that hurts, because I honestly and truly do love it.

Oh, Starlene, that's really, really cool!

Starlene In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-05-20 20:34:59 +0000 UTC]

I think I've an idea of those hipster fans you're talking about. I know the attitude. Pretty annoying. I'm trying my best not to become one of them - even though I notice those creepy signs in me every once in a while, signs that scream that Enjy must be blonde and everything must be book!canon. Even though I've never even read the unabridged book. (Shoot me... But there's not such thing in Finnish: it has been printed unabridged only once, 90 years ago...)
I remember when I was new to the fanbase and tried to find a place to talk about Les Mis... Those people scared me more than once, it felt like they knew everything but didn't really want to share any of it with the newbies. I even wrote a Finnish blog text to criticise that (weirdly enough one of them googletranslated it in about two days and got pretty mad. How they found me I'll never know, I was careful not to mention any names)... I don't get where the attitude comes from, new fans mean new life to the fandom, not some weird threat!
But luckily there's dART. This is the place with the most amazing Mizzies.

I'm letting you read a little bit:
"- Maybe you could share a couple of fun, interesting or memorable things that happened during the production with the readers?
- Aside from being sexually harassed by Thénardier and all that?"

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-20 21:05:04 +0000 UTC]

I am generally kind to all fans, except the ones that piss me off, and I'm not always all about apperances- I always will lobby for blonde Cosette's, but I prefer blonde Enjolrai. I absolutley despised Ramin at first, because he wasn't blonde- and was pretty terrible about it at first. I finally warmed up to him after a temporary lapse of reality several weeks later.

The Les Mis fanbase still mostly scares me, because everyone has been in it for so much longer than me, and most everyone is older and more intimidating- like I mentioned to you briefly before, it took me quite some time to approach you about my Tik Tok thing, because you honestly frighten me, no offense or anything, most people do- and so I'm fairly submissive and quiet and unwilling to talk to anyone who I don't know very well.

Oh my gosh, that's pretty funny. xD

Starlene In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-05-20 21:20:56 +0000 UTC]

I loved Ramin from the beginning though - I dislike the previous DVD Enjolras so much that even if Ramin had blue skin like a smurf I'd still preferred him!

That's true for me too - I may occasionally think I'm the Les Mis master of dART, but in Abaissé, for example, I rarely dare to open my mouth... They know all! I haven't read the whole book! I don't belong!
How's the project going, btw? Has anyone contacted you?

Now it's over midnight and I think I have to go to bed. I would like to stay awake and finish the interview, but usually sleeping on things gives them a little more sense.

I hated him, absolutley despised him. Now I love him, because, to me, he is Enjolras.

You totally are the master of dA. No one can even hold a candle to you here. On Abaisse, I'm not so sure about who is the master of that, I'm a fairly new member, and I haven't been on in awhile, but those guys scare me even more than you guys over here.

And yes! Three people have noted me, so things are looking up. Thanks for the note in your journal, I really, really appreciate it.

GOOD NIGHT STARLENE, MAY YOU SLEEP WELL AND MAY THE DIETY OF YOUR CHOICE BLESS AND KEEP YOU SAFE.

I don't really know of Abaissé's pecking order neither, though - but I'm still afraid of joining the conversations because it feels like I've nothing new to bring there, others are so much better-read... Well, maybe in five years or so I've gathered enough knowledge to contribute something and frighten newcomers.

Great, that's just awesome! Glad to hear it's working out! Hmm, have to get around drawing the pics one of these days - there's only the two-week long test week left before summer vacation, so I'll have more than enough time soon!

Southern00Belle In reply to Starlene [2011-05-21 18:23:08 +0000 UTC]

Don't abuse your power, Starlene. No one likes a power abuser. Not that you would abuse your power. You're not that kind of girl. Well, actually, you might be. I don't know you very well. And by "very well" I pretty much mean "at all". You're pretty much a stranger to me. Not that you should take offense at that. I don't know lots of people. And by "lots of people" I mean I don't know pretty much anyone. I'm anti-social. You may very well be a power abuser, I don't know, but from what little conversations we've had, I would say you're not. I mean, if you told me not to defile gravity and then just turned around and abused your power, that would make you a hypocrite, and you don't seem like that kind of person either. But then again I was never good with judging people. I make snap judgements a lot, which probably accounts for it.

You should join the conversations, Starlene! Add your wisdom! Even if you are less well-read than them, you still have your thoughts and ideas, and that's what really counts!

Once I get enough people, I'm going to request a two month deadline, I think, but I'm still on the people hunt, so I'm working on it.

Starlene In reply to Southern00Belle [2011-05-22 06:51:52 +0000 UTC]

I try to keep that in mind, not to abuse any of my supposed power... Life's generally better when no one's being abused.

Thinking about that... Thinking...
I've never been a good forum-user anyway, I end up a lurker every time (except when I once had my own Tim Burton related forum, had to say something back then ). Maybe it's some paranoia that no one actually cares about what I've to say - which is funny, because usually I love nothing more than talking about stuff I like and bore my IRL buddies with my obsessions all the time without much guilt...

Staaaarlene! Come on, woman! You've got to put your heart in it! In fact, if it will help, just imagine that the forum is like facebook- no one really cares about what anyone else is saying, but they throw their own opinions out there anyway- if it helps, I'll be your wingman. If anyone's mean to you, I'll have your back, man. Don't worry about it.

It's funny, I'm kind of the opposite of you in real life. I don't like boring my friends with things they don't care about, but I love fangirling, so I'll either put myself in their fanbase (like I did with POTO) or drag them into my fanbase.

I'm afraid of Facebook, too. Left after two weeks. But maybe I'll try opening my mouth a little more. If I've anything to say, that is. I make no promises...

I can relate to the dragging into my fanbase thing - I do that all the time! I've created Tim Burton fans, Cats fans, a Wicked fan and even a semi-Mizzie or two. I won't be dragged, though. I'm horrible in that sense - I force my own thoughts on others but never listen to them, it seems...

I've managed to drag my friend Sam into Les Mis and Doctor Who, and I think Wicked's next- I'm making her learn Glinda's part to For Good so her and I can duet it. I love making her learn duets. I made her learn Valjean's part to Confrontation before she even knew what Les Miserables was. I'm terrible.

Haha, you've actually managed to teach someone Confrontation! That's great! I've tried, but it doesn't seem to work out... Maybe it's my own non-musicalness though, I always fail with it.

Sam is really willing to do whatever, so after a few tries, we got Confrontation down pat. Though I think the time I was most glad I had learned not just Javert's part, but also Valjean's part to the song was when I somehow ended up doing a duet with a friend in Scotland, and he did Javert's part, and I did Valjean's, and that was a really weird day.

Thanks!
I actually didn't translate it, just fixed some typos and rearranged stuff and thing like that: he's so Finnish-Swedish he doesn't really speak Finnish, and I'm so Finnish-Finnish I don't really speak Swedish (this is just what the minister of education and whonot in this country want to avoid: they want us to be able to communicate both in Finnish and Swedish. It's not that insane around here. Pretty normal, actually.
Oh, wait... About two percent of the whole people gathered in Helsinki, on one square, when our team won gold in ice hockey a week ago. Yeah, madness lies withing this country and its inhabitants, a little at least...

I recognise the grammar conciousness in myself, too... I seem to annoy people with it, but I just can't stand grammar mistakes (in Finnish that is, I don't really dare to boast with perfect English)...

Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I'll die before the chance to. Maybe I'll live, but never get married.

Finland=Freaking madness

I often absentmindedly correct people. I was applying for a volunteer position at a local library not too long ago, and one of my friends was on his facebook, so I was sitting next to him filling out my form, while he was talking to people, and every minute or so I would glance up and notice a mistake he had made, and correct him. I wasn't even really thinking about it, because his errors are just so obvious to me, but he got really mad at me.

There are other sorts of happy endings than getting married, I'm sure! I should know, being an asexual means I probably won't be getting married anytime soon...

That's me, too, pretty much! I've a friend who's not really good at grammar. She sits next to me in Finnish class. I correct her mistakes all the time - seems to annoy her, but maybe if she learns something eventually it's for the greater good. Maybe.

I either want to get married or die young. But wait, what does that even mean? What are you saying, man? Not that what you say will ever change what I think of you. I love in a totally unconditional way, remember that.

In my school, all of the grades are in one big room, and we do our work online, and one day I was sitting next to a 5th grader- I'm in 8th grade, by the way- and I had finished my work so I was reading, and he was working on a book report for one of the Harry Potter books. As it is, my knowledge of both the English language and Harry Potter is far superior to his, so I was constantly correcting him on not just commas and periods, but also on the characters and such. Eventually he just opted to move across the room, so I would leave him alone.

Noo, don't die young! That'd be horrible!
Being asexual means, quite simply, not feeling sexual attraction towards any gender. There are a lot of different people who identify as asexual, and everybody's different, but that's the most general definition. It doesn't mean you can't be in love, for example - many asexuals have relationships, some without sex and some with it. Not me though, or at least not so far - but I don't know what future has in store for me...

He must've felt, hmm... Pretty grateful? Haha, that's great! Though you mustn't correct 5th graders too much - the teacher won't believe they've written their texts themselves anymore...
You go to a pretty small school, then? Also, kind of sweet - we hardly touch a computer during the school year in my school!

I'm pretty freaking morbid when it comes down to it. When talking to friends when I have to leave, sometimes I say "Bye!" and sometimes I say something vaguely along the lines of "I have to go do (insert whatever I'm doing here) now. I don't know when I can come back. It may be a matter of minutes, hours, weeks or years. In fact, we may never meet again throughout the course of our natural lives. Should it be the the latter, I want you to know that you have been a wonderful friend to me throughout our time together, and as long as I live, I will not forget what you've done for me. Farewell."
I also spend a lot of time thinking about death and what comes next after death. I also have a morbid fascination with last words.
...
Yep, totally normal 13 year old right here.

I can't help it, he was making blatant and almost embarrassing errors! I felt pain for the English language!
My school has less than 45 students, and so it's really small. Next year I'm going to a little bigger but still kind of small high school. It's really well known and well praised. I'm really, really excited.

At least you won't regret not telling your friends what you think of them - though some may be the tiniest bit freaked out when hearing that?
Last words are interesting, though. Too bad I've a hard time believing half of the last words found on famous last words lists and such have ever been said...

Heh, I go to a high school with 600 kids and zero spirit... Glad it's not that for you!

I think everyone's used to it by now. I don't know. Even when I was six, though, after my dad had to go back to work after dinner, I would always just hug him really tight, because I was always totally terrified that he would die in a car accident and I would never see him alive again.

The problem with last words, witnesses get emotional, and the original speaker isn't around to clear up any confusion. I still like knowing all of the possibilities. Though really, I would kill just to know what Einstein might have said when he was dying.

No! Man, my school has like, the most spirit! That may be because our teacher lets us play Minecraft during lunch, but at any rate, we're always in a good mood.

I recognise a bit of myself there again - I used to be terribly afraid something would happen to my parents when they were working, too. Especially those night shifts my dad did at the newspaper he worked in... If he wasn't home by the time he said he would be I was pretty much convinced he was not going to be home ever again... Paranoid kid, I was...

I think I'll cry of envy soon. You get to play Minecraft in school. Totally. Not. FAIR!!!
I like Minecraft quite a lot. Except for that I'm terribly afraid of going to the caves.

Dude. I think we're like, long lost sisters, or something. My dad's the night shift guy, and so I barely saw him when I was a kid, and so of course I was scared, knowing that he'd be out there at night. I think another thing which can be attributed to my paranoia and fascination with death is that I'm not actually the youngest of three like I usually say I am, I'm the second youngest of four. My little brother John was born when I was six, but he only lived two weeks. I think dealing with a death of a family member at such a young age has /totally/ screwed me over emotionally.

Haha, yes. We play Minecraft at school. My friend Carter, the idiot who mocked Les Mis, actually is the one who got us all into it. He had a premium account, so he let us all use his, until we got around to buying our own- I finally have gotten my own, my name is InspectorJavert and my dude is Enjolras.
Ahaha, the caves. I actually play Minecraft on Peaceful, so I don't have to worry about monsters hiding in the caves and whatnot. All I have to do is worry about accidently going into lava. Which I seem to do pretty often.

Oh, that is really sad, I'm very sorry. Can't imagine what's it like, but it must've been horrible - and I'm sure you're a really strong person, having come through something like that.
(Luckily) I don't have any such memories to blame with my weird paranoias. I'm just a real wuss.

Now why didn't I think of a Les Mis related nick? I'm just Starlene, or StarleneD, can't remember right now...
I can't play on peaceful, I figure that would be cheating (even though no one'd know, so my opinion is actually quite silly)... So I play on easy and scream like a madwoman every time there's a creeper behind me. Though, if you play at school, maybe it's for the better you use peaceful. It would scare others if you screamed all the time.

I barely remember most of the experience now. I only saw him once when he was alive, the rest of the time was spent jumping from friends house to friends house, while my mom was in a hospital two hours away and my dad was on the night shift. But I'm still blaming my morbidness on it.

I play on Peaceful anyway. Drives Carter crazy, since it's for beginners, but I don't like fighting the monsters. I like mining in peace, and sometimes going out on crazy adventures, without having to worry about whether or not I can find adequate shelter for the night.
