Description
Adopted from , here
(The head monster's still open, but keep in mind that these aren't UT monsters by nature and I asked specific permission to make him an Undertale OC, but if you like the head, it's open!)
I accidentally saw a beautiful monster adopt and had to buy it and make it an Undertale character of my own, oops DX. So, um... yeah. This is my OC (though obviously all design credit should go to ), Haberdashing. I tried to stay true to Undertale and its tendency to name characters after puns of some kind, so Haberdashing here is a combination of 'Dashing' as in a handsome and fashionable, and Haberdasher; A haberdasher is a person who sells small articles for sewing, such as buttons, ribbons, zips, or a men's outfitter.
His design in terms of what I extrapolated from the adopt itself was to make him more overtly resemble a mannequin and also give him scissor-like legs to continue the trend of sewing theme, along with his button eyes. I mostly did button eyes because I feel uncomfortable designing characters without pupils for the most part.
Haberdashing actually has battle data and a battle style in my head, I conceived of it for fun. I don't have attack, defense, or HP set for him, because I don't really understand those mechanics well, as I've only ever attacked Asgore, and hell if I know what his stats mean, but I know Haberdashing would have around Mad Dummy's stats, slightly higher as he would be encountered farther in to Waterfall, as a similar miniboss to Muffet, using purple magic. This again, fits with the sewing theme with the strings on the Purple Magic Bullet Board. His attacks would be:
- Buttons moving across the strings, like Muffet's spiders
- Sewing needles that wave between the three strings so you have to move in time with them to avoid getting hit
- A pair of scissors will come onto the screen and cut one of the three strings, damaging you if you fail to move from the string being cut in time.
I even made a really silly dumb sprite of him that's far too small for Undertale, but was fun to make anyway, you can see here.
The ACT button would come with four options:
*Check:
- Likes to tip his hat.
- Smells like fabric.
- Constantly adjusting his bow-tie.
- How does he smile with his mouth stitched up?
- Waving his arm about for fun. Seems like it's the only thing that's moving.
- Haberdashing winks at you.
- Seems like he's a bit out of place here.
- [GENOCIDE] Looks extremely foppish.
- [GENOCIDE] Thinks his bowtie makes him look handsome. It's not working.
- [GENOCIDE] Missing an arm.
- [GENOCIDE] How does he keep smiling?
- [GENOCIDE] Waving his arm around pointlessly.
- [GENOCIDE] Haberdashing glares at you.
- [GENOCIDE] Doesn't belong here.
*Flirt (Blocked on a Genocide Route):
- Haberdashing tips his hat to you. Damage is reduced this turn. [Damage reduced in half]
- Haberdashing grins, but only a little. Damage is reduced this turn [NOTE: Damage is only reduced by 1/4th, works twice]
- Haberdashing winks, but says nothing. Seems he's done with flattery [No change]
- [GENOCIDE] Haberdashing doesn't want your compliments. [No change]
*Insult:
- You laugh mockingly at Haberdashing's bowtie. He frowns. Attack speed increases this turn. [NOTE: Attacks move twice as fast]
- You snicker at Haberdashing's hat. He huffs in annoyance. Attack speed increases this turn. [NOTE: Attacks move 1.5 times faster]
- You laugh at Haberdashing's bowtie. He frowns, but says nothing. Seems he's no longer bothered by insults. [Attacks return to normal]
*Sweater (The Spare option, only works after exhausting *Flirt):
- You motion towards your sweater in an attempt to communicate with fashion. Seems he doesn't understand. Maybe being more direct could have resulted in a better result. [Nothing, continues until you complete 'Flirt']
- You ask Haberdashing to fix your sweater. He smiles and nods. This should have been your first option. [Green magic buttons appear this turn]
- Your sweater is patched up nicely, and you grin. Once again, communication issues seem to be your main problem here. [Nothing]
- You decide to tell Haberdashing that he did a good job. Why didn't you just say it the first time? Seems he is satisfied. [SPARE is now an option]
- It seems as though Haberdashing feels no need to fight you and ruin his hard work. Maybe you should quit while you're ahead.
He can be defeated in 8 turns, minimum. His dialogue for the required 8/Other:
#1st turn, SPARE attempted: 'I'm really rather sorry, but I believe Captain Undyne would have my head if I didn't kill you now.'
#2nd turn, SPARE attempted: 'Honestly, I'd rather be fixing up that poor sweater of yours, but I don't know if I should trust you.'
#3rd turn and on, SPARE attempted: 'You're not making a case for yourself either way.'
#1st time Flirting: 'Well that's flattering! I didn't know humans were so good with words!'
#2nd time Flirting: 'Again with the kind words? You humans certainly know how to compliment a monster, don't you?'
#3rd time Flirting: 'Well, how can I say no to such a compliment? You keep surprising me!'
#4th time Flirting: 'Now, dear, you're just piling it on a little too thick.'
#5th time Flirting and on: 'Flattery has lost its charm.'
#1st time Insulting: 'Laughing at a gentleman's outfit is very rude, you know.'
#2nd time Insulting: 'Now you're just being petty, dear.'
#3rd time Insulting: 'It's unbecoming to keep this up.'
#4th time Insulting and on: 'Really, human, it's lost all effect.'
#1st time using your Sweater: 'Is flapping your arms a sign in human culture? If so, I'm afraid you've lost me.'
#2nd time using your Sweater: 'Oh, why didn't you say so? I would be happy to fix such a polite human's clothing!'
#3rd time using your Sweater: '.... I'm afraid once again, I'm lost. Are all humans this confusing?'
#4th time using your Sweater: 'Oh, thank you, dear! I'm happy to know you're pleased by my work!'
#5th time using your Sweater and on: 'I would hate to ruin your newly fixed sweater, dear.'
#1st turn, ATTACKing: 'I suppose I'll just have to ruin your poor clothing either way. Such a shame.'
#2nd turn, ATTACKing: 'I so wanted to just have a good day working on my sewing, but you had to ruin that.'
#3rd turn, ATTACKing: 'But I guess there's no getting around it.'
#4th turn, ATTACKing and on; '...'
#1st turn, SPARE attempted [GENOCIDE] : 'I'm fairly certain that Captain Undyne would prefer it if I simply killed you now, I'm dreadfully sorry.'
#2nd turn, SPARE attempted [GENOCIDE] : 'Honestly, I'd rather be fixing up that poor sweater of yours, but I feel like you don't deserve it.'
#3rd turn and on, SPARE attempted [GENOCIDE] : 'You won't make your case any better, dear.'
#1st time Flirting [GENOCIDE] : 'I would consider a compliment from one such as you an insult.'
Ok, now that I've exhausted his battle data, have his ACTUAL story, personality and such. Haberdashing is a Mannequin Monster, native to Waterfall. Ever wondered who patches up Undyne's jeans when she inevitably scrapes them up? This is your guy; ever wondered where Tsunderplane got her nice hat? Custom made for the cute little ghost possessed remote control airplane! Who made those Temmies their non-Tem Armor sweaters? This guy! If you need fashion in the Underground, he's one of the many non-trash options for your clothing, especially in Waterfall, and he's incredibly cheap, considering he doesn't need to eat, and can manifest clothing with his magic, he only charges out of obligation, honestly. He does it all for the love of the craft. He's famous for that, though most richer or high class monsters would prefer to be tailored by someone who charges more, if only because only the peasants would buy from someone who barely charges. Elitism is strange; refusing to use something cheaper because it's cheaper and therefore holds less 'value' in social circles, despite being just as good. People, and monsters, can be strange sometimes.
His tentacle/arm is stretchy and barely attached to his body, stuck on magic, since he's a Mannequin, he has to manually manifest his own arms, rather than having them naturally. He only has one arm, now.. but he used to have the other, and now the last shreds of his tentacle magic blobs stay semi-attached by magic to his body, just floating there. He lost his arm... well... he doesn't really want to talk about it.. can we just drop it? He's not comfortable with the story. It was ripped off by... somebody. But he won't talk about it, so nobody knows. Everyone's just learned to not ask. He charges more when agitated, whether he realizes it or not.
Personality-wise, he's the perfect gentleman, almost ridiculously so, chivalrous to the extreme, as if he read too many fairy tales about handsome princes when he was a child and decided to emulate them, until it became his actual personality. He opens the door for others, tips his hat to strangers, smiles and winks at anyone who smiles at him, compliments others as often as he can... He's just a giant chivalrous loser. He's especially kind to children, who he tends to give them pats on the head and bowties or ribbons, just because they were so kind. Of course, he has little tolerance for rudeness, but he refuses to stoop to that level. An arm for an arm leaves everybody... wait, that was an eye for an eye, do-over. But the point being that he's a relative pacifist, but like all other monsters, it's well known that humans are to be dealt with or report them. And at 80+, (Monsters who aren't animals or are object based live for much longer than most) Haberdashing's met two humans. He likes Frisk the best.
He's canon to my Undertale HC, and Frisk encountered him in the Waterfall caverns, and... he's probably the reason that Frisk's sweater remained intact for the rest of their time Underground, even after being grazed by spears, burned, bitten, all that nasty stuff, because Haberdashing takes pride in his work, and that care is part of why his clothing lasts so long.
He doesn't know Frisk that well, only as much as the other monsters that fought them, but they thanked him again after it was all over for fixing their sweater, and he offered to make them another. Later on, Frisk asked him to tailor for Sans and Toriel's wedding, since the two were unsure of how to find a good tailor, since human tailors wouldn't really be very good at getting Toriel a dress, and Frisk figured 'hey, I know a monster who does clothes'... Haberdashing insisted on doing it free, even though Toriel protested. After all, she's the queen, and he'd never worked with very rich monsters. He got recommended for another skeletal wedding and another Boss Monster wedding later on, entirely on reccomendation, but he's still only 'the tailor that Frisk insists on going to instead of a human tailor' rather than particularly close to the cast.

I... kind of want Etta Toriel to be unique... I mean, she's already not that unique, I worry, anyway, so I would be willing to make a soriel character, but not one like her. Plus, with hybrids, randomness is a factor in my designs.

Oh I really really do, but I understand if you don't want to do it. I was thinking something like a brother of Etta, called Eddy, or Lazy. With blue eyes instead of gold.

Oh my
oh my gosh
I'm so glad you like him! I was unnecessarily fretting over that, but then again, that's kind of what I do ;-_-;
I would highly reccomend it. It's obviously very very popular, which can obviously be intimidating, and a turn off, hell, I only decided to play it after my friend bought it and I decided I couldn't be left in the dark, previously I'd been avoiding it entirely out of the hype.
Literally after finishing it I suddenly went 'where has this been all my life?' all dramatic-like like I do.

Tbh I didn't like it because of the hype, and I don't think I'll ever like it enough to join the "fanbase" of the game.

StarryOak In reply to Aberash-Mono [2017-01-19 03:30:34 +0000 UTC]
Ehehheh, well, that's what I said, but I'm easily hyped. If I like a thing, I dive headfirst into it and LOVE IT FOREVER, so I'm not the best person to ask about the 'will it live up to hype' because I'm always hyped. But it's a relatively cheap game and generally, hype happens for a reason, worst case scenario, you waste 10 bucks. Best case, you enjoy a game or even change your mind, not that that's necessary. If you don't like something, you don't like it. ^-^ but if you like strange monster designs and bullet board gameplay, and also fabulous rectangles, you might like it.

Ah, sorry. I'm a gamer by nature (and nurture; if your dad programs video games for a living, you're bound to love them) so usually my experiences with a game come from diving head first into it. I just assumed.Β

Honestly, same, mostly. Undertale just turned out to be a happy exception. That and Pokemon. But that was a lifelong thing too. I also like some click and pointers (Blame the fact that my dad helped make most of Humongous Entertainment's games, like Putt Putt and Pajama Sam) but generally I love exploring, like Fallout

He's so cute! I love the little details you added to his design, and he's really well thought-out! His name is probably the best Undertale OC name I've seen. Most of the ones I've seen are just human names or fonts.

Everything about him is so balanced. He could fit right in the game.

Awww, well, I mean, again, the base design was an adopt, so please credit them for the ingenuity ^-^
But what do you mean about him being balanced?
π: 0 β©: 1
Megan1289 In reply to StarryOak [2017-01-20 03:24:36 +0000 UTC]
Like he's not too overpowered, he's not clichΓ©, he doesn't alter the canon in ridiculous ways, etc.
π: 0 β©: 1
StarryOak In reply to Megan1289 [2017-01-20 03:32:17 +0000 UTC]
The only problem I know he has as altering the canon is more of a meta situation; Muffet's the only one to ever use Purple Magic, and her battle introduces it. I just honestly assumed that others could useit, we just never see another Purple Magic user, and secondly; Haberdashing would appear before her, making her introduction strange, but I couldn't alter the battle structure of Purple Magic, since it's part of his character theme.

Megan1289 In reply to StarryOak [2017-01-20 04:38:10 +0000 UTC]

StarryOak In reply to Megan1289 [2017-01-20 06:06:20 +0000 UTC]
I guess if it's that good...maybe technically in an actual game situation he'd only be unlockable in a second playthrough, since you definitely know how Purple Magic works, and since my Overtale headcanon has the world having been reset... many times.... it would make sense.
