Description Sketched May ‎21, ‎2017, this was the last of the Psychonauts art I did for this set! There's still other shit I did that may or may not ever see the light of day, but it's here nonetheless!

I never posted these because I hadn't finished the full cast before my ADHD shat out on me and I couldn't motivate myself to draw them, lol!

Anyway, you guys need to play Psychonauts. 1 or 2, they're just. Fucking perfect games. I love them so fucking much and I need more people to play them. My dad's old friends made it and the games are just. They're cult classics for a reason.

If you're a modern gamer who's never played games from the PS2 era, don't worry! The second game, having come out in 2021, over 15 years from the original, has a quick summary of the first game at the start for anyone who didn't play it! But you should also consider playing the first one, it's so damn good. I cannot stress this enough.

My dad's friends made it, so I am legally obligated to shill it at every turn and also defend it to the death against any and all criticism. Honestly, I'd like to be joking, because I believe everything has flaws and that there's nothing wrong with disliking things I like, but like. I can't help it. My dad's friends made this game and therefore if you are mean to it you are being mean to my dad's friends and by extension my dad, so I must kill you. I'm joking, but emotionally, that's how my brain feels about it, lol.

Psychonauts is about a world set in a bizarro version of the 80's where people with psychic powers are a real thing, and are often a discriminated against minority. The main character is a psychic child named Razputin Aquato, who runs away to Whispering Rocks Psychic Summer Camp, a summer camp for psychic kids that's also a recruitment camp for an organization called, you guessed it, the Psychonauts. An organization of psychic individuals called upon by the government for covert secret ops, using to their abilities to go into the minds of their enemies and muck about in them. Razputin arrives at camp just in time to accidentally get involved in stopping a plot to take over the world, and all of the levels in the game take place inside various character's minds.

I will say, if you decide to play the original, it is very 2005 in both its gameplay and its depiction of mental illness, but I don't say that to mean that it's meanspirited, but more that there's a lot more resources available for people in knowing how to depict things properly, and how we depict mental illness in media has changed massively in the 15 years between then and now; a lot of the game, if you were to be uncharitable, would seem like it was intentionally mocking the mentally ill, but while it's true that the game did laugh at them in some ways, as official statements throughout the years by Doublefine has revealed, they were making deliberate choices about how to portray the characters; they’ve talked about the fact that one of the reasons they went the way they did with the asylum patients that feature in the game was that they wanted to make it clear that the asylum patients weren’t meant to be ‘real’ people. They wanted to make it so it didn’t feel like they were making fun of real people with these mental illnesses, so they made them seem more extreme than reality, and the game still offers these characters sympathy and tries to treat them as people deserving of better treatment than they received despite this being the case.
So it actually ties into the point that how we treat mental illness in media has changed. They were doing their best to be respectful of real people in their own ways as well, while now we have more knowledge and experience in how portraying these things works.

Kitty Bubai and Franke Athens are those mean little bitches that I think every group of children has, where they form a small little clique and spend all their time being mean to the other campers, but much more importantly, they're girlfriends! This isn't fully explicit in the game itself, which, 2005, makes sense, but their Campster profiles make this much more explicitly obvious; their relationship status both have been set to 'open marriage' (god, 10 year olds with internet access), and more 'subtle' references include that most of their favorite media is either directly lesbian oriented or famous for having homoerotic subtext. For example, Kitty's favorite TV show is Xena: Warrior Princess, and Franke's favorite band is t.A.T.u.

They're just your average catty little bitches, but, well, that's their charm, I suppose!
