Description Stage 1 [marked 2062]: The United Nations Space Counsel ratifies the Mars Terraformation Proposal, resulting in the formation of the multi-nation Martian Terraformation Counsel. Probes are set to begin preliminary data-finding.

Stage 2 [marked 2118]: Greenhouse gas production has reached critical levels for widespread melting of the polar icecaps. Polar seas begin to form.

Stage 3 [marked 2137]: CO2 levels rise dramatically as subsurface ice sublimates. The atmosphere is thick enough to begin extensive seeding with genetically modified algae.

Stage 4 [marked 2201]: Oxygen levels have risen substantially, all available water has been liquified. Project declared completed and successful.

this is an awesome step by step look at how it would look and its a good reference for me cuz im making a story as well as some art about a futuristic earth and mars that are at war.

But what about its basically non-existent magnetic field? wouldn't the atmposhere be destroyed in a few thousand years?

Nice work! What 3d software did you use?

StAugustus In reply to DarinK [2011-10-14 04:33:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! I used a combination of 3Ds Max and Photoshop. I basically just created a base lighted sphere at 50% grey in 3Ds and then applied the texture over it in Photoshop.

You did an awesome job, did the texture take long to make?

Very cool video. I was tempted to try and turn this into an animation, but the task was a bit too daunting...

Mars has so much frozen water on it's north and south poles that if we were to try to terraform it, not that the technology will exist anytime soon, we'd need to heat up the planet, stabilize the core to get it's magnetic field back up, and stabilize the atmosphere, but the planet has so much ice that were that all to melt, it would drown the entire planet in a 3 meter deep later of water. You could melt some of it to get some oceans, but it hard to stabilize temperatures. Look at us.

lol i hope i get to see that in my life time, but as things go man will set foot on mars early 2030, so maybe by the end of the century mars gets a little hotter. great work too man appreciate the comment

StAugustus In reply to thaOman [2011-10-14 04:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, I don't think the technology will exist for true terraformation for a really, really long time. We can only hope though
