Description Caranthir offered to Men his lands to live in protected, but Haleth refused, for now she was chosen a Chieftain, being of great heart and no less in valour than her kinsmen. Next year she led her people to Estolad; and after a time again urged them to move further westward.

In Celtic lore females fought alongside male warriors.

Those who had a strong spirit - deserve it, I suppose.

More likely: those who had a strong spirit and physical abilities were too useful in times of war to be shooed away, but wouldn't have been allowed if the men of these times really had the choice.

Β Most excellent work, Steamey and please forgive me for placing my delusions of Humour under it.Β

She really looks the part of chieftain (chieftan-ess?) in this picture. Nicely done.

I've always thought of the three houses of the edain (the first men to come into the west); Beor, Haleth, and Marach/Hador, as corresponding in their physical and societal descriptions to the three major "types" of western european peoples (as reckoned by the academic community of tolkien's time) respectively the "mediterrenian, alpine(celtic), and nordic/teutonic types" which would make the woodsmen of brethil (and certainly their descendants in dunland, who share a very british/english history of conflict with the very anglo-saxon-like, hador-descended rohirrim) a kind of celtic people, with a tough matriarch like Haleth fulfilling a Boudicca-type role. You've caught that perfectly here.

really superb piece of work.

Wow.Sometimes i forget how detailed and historicalΒ the world of Middle-earth.

Above all i like strong female characters.Stieg Larsson says about it in epigraphs to his books, thatΒ the importance of women in the real history greatly underestimated. They went into battle on a par with any man.Long beforeΒ the Middle Ages.

She was one tough cookie, it could not have been easy convincing them to follow her or denying an Elf-lord. Go Haleth!

Another brave woman created by Tolkien. That is exactly why I love his books.

This is an amazing scene! And one that I love especially xD She's like the epitome of Tolkien's badass girls. And how you've drawn the scene is just beautiful! ^^
