Description Ever since *alecan posted her reference sheet of Nauca, I've been looking for an excuse to draw her She's such an awesome-looking dragon character. So I decided to make that excuse her birthday, which judging by her journal last year is today

On the sketch I drew contour lines on the dragon's body so that I could ink the scales properly. By the time I had finished with inking the main body, I realized that if I took much longer due to the time zone difference, the day would end before I got a chance to post it! So I just put the sketch in on overlay and shaded on top... I think it came out well.

Happy birthday, Alecan!

I'm not afraid of scales
Normally I don't put very much detail into my work because I go for a more cartoon style, you know? A lot of people seem to omit them, but when you think about it 90% of dragons do have scales on their body somewhere...
Anyway, I'm glad you like it!

Wow, amazing! The scales along the wings and arms add a wonderful amount of texture, and the smooth, flowing shape complements the character quite well.

Thank you!

I tend to reuse this particular pose fairly frequently since I always seem to get good results with it, hehe

Niiiice job I like the way the gold scales, in particular, have come out - they've got that nice burnished sheen to them The right-hand eye (her left) looks a bit squidged up, but the background is woinderful. The contours really make it!

Shading metallic things is so much funnnn

Yea I can see what you mean about the eyes... as I'm trying to improve my ability to render things as 3D objects, my old cartooning/anime-derived bad habits seem to continually crop up to get in my way Thanks for pointing that out.

I always forget the damn highlight...

I think actually you could get away with just the one eye on this pic... erase that bit of the head, up until the nearest line on the nose... see what I mean?

No problem

Heh. Well, I'm trying to start thinking of metal objects as 3D-shaped mirrors, think about everything in the scene that would be reflected in them, and shade them accordingly. That takes a lot of time and mental strain, though, so you can do the lazy thing and cheat by alternating the normal tone for the metal with a few dark, desaturated areas, a highlight, a highly saturated area (if the metal has a color), etc. The lazy thing was obviously what I did here, since I admitted that this was a speedpaint! But I really want to try to do metals properly. If you want to see a gallery with amazingly rendered metallic dragons, go watch =mariecannabis

No, that wouldn't work. It's supposed to be a 7/8 view of the head from above, and trying to make it into a profile view would make it look WAY weirder than it does right now, even though the head fin and chin spikes are a little too upright for the angle I tried to be believable.

I'm primarily a cartoonist, so expressions tend to be my strong point

Thanks
