Even when I was twelve and still making fan characters... I made my own without tracing. I designed them from the ground up and I didn't need to trace over some poor animator's work.

I use to when I was younger (Young and stupid, that was me) I use to use lots of bases when drawing my Naruto oc because my art was sucky. But then I realized "Well if I don't try to draw, then it will remain sucky!" About 99% of the oc are just Sakura recolors. When they get confronted they use the excuse "Well I'm not a good artist! Once I am I won't need to use these anymore ^^"
Well the only way to get good is to stop tracing and actually do it! But I've seen people who can draw and still trace! (Like that Aome girl) I mean if you want to do a fun little crossover that's fine. I mean who doesn't like crossovers. But using her as a serious oc, calling her "just a crossover", Β and pairing her with nearly all the men from Naruto is just... No...

i do my own characters and i came up with one out of nothing. i traced a lot, and i mean A LOT, even from Sakura and Karin, mostly. but now i trace for lineart and color practicing, i don't even upload it to dA, because it's not my own original creation. i've learned from my mistakes and i won't do it again.
and it's pretty annoying. seeing bunch of pictures which have been traced from Sakura and even they are proud of it. i mean wtf dude, that's not right!
it's okay for tracing as long as they are not on the internet and kept in a personal folder on the computer. (at least this is what i do)

I don't get why people throw fits over pairings. Sure I dislike many but won't say anything unless people are bashing. I don't get the big deal about that. That goes for both canon characters and or OCs.
But I do agree that tracing and recoloring is basically stealing. Sure you can make a sketch and trace over your own art to line it, but don't take someone else's pic and do so and recoloring doesn't make it original or any better.

Uh? Are you talking about tracing their own picture? Nobody cares if you trace your own picture as it belongs to you, thus it isn't stealing. But unless you know how to draw and you are just cleaning the picture up, you aren't learning anything really anything so it isn't any learning value though as you are just copying, but not really understanding how the anatomy, drawing the wrinkles on the clothing and perspective really works. Better to use it as a reference instead.

What I meant is I didn't copy any clothes or hair or whatever. What I meant is the pose like.. a mannequin doll as a guildline.

You me a reference, which is different from tracing. Referencing is still your own art, style and you are still learning instead of blindly copying. As long as the rest of the concept is different and not identical, there is no problem with that.

its super annoying when they put real characters with their characters and make it a pairing! and ppl actually like it!
i don't think it's REALLY a problem when they (DON'T YELL AT ME FOR SAYING THIS!) recoloring and drawing but you draw more. if you're trying to make a character but your making it over something you have to at least TRY

Okay! I admit it! I used to trace when I was like 5, and I couldn't draw that good (but that didn't stop me from using my magnet doodle all the time) but I still used to trace. I like put a piece of paper up the TV when it was paused and trace over the characters, and I did it a little when I was like 10. And when I was 8 I went on youtube and I found videos recolored screenshots and I was like "Ooh! I think I'll do that too!" I even stole peoples ideas through ages 8 and 11 (I think) and upload my recolors on Youtube. But my account got deleted and now I have a new, recolor free one. But all throught those years I drew too, and nowadays, I don't post a bunch of recolors on the internet, I learned that's not a good way to get popular, I decided that recoloring and tracing is not all that fun, plus it's easy to just draw, you just make a bunch of shapey lines and use the paint can to color in. (well, that's how I do it), but I hardly ever color on paper.
I draw ALOT nowadays, and I mean DRAW! I bet if I taped all of my untraced drawings to my bedroom wall I wouldn't be able the see the wall anymore.

Sometimes is a good way to learn to draw though if theres a picture you see that you wanna draw you ccan trace over it a bunch to get your hand used to the shapes and curves and then draw it free hand
