Description These are the final spreads now for my book "deaths in happy places". Ive opted for a design style that is bold, colourful and simplistic. The reason for this is that from first glance the reader will not realise what the genre of the book is, it is only as the start to read the type that they realise its a book on death. The whole book is my original photography and own hand made balloons (Ive had a crash course in balloon modelling to get up to speed) each death is illustrated using balloons, for the purpose that balloons seem safe and cheerful, but can surprise you when popped. Bit like this book. Also the idea of inflation suggests the idea of protection from death and how we all try to caccoon ourselves away from it, the term "protective bubble".
The illustration in this spread is simple, a blown up balloon, bleeding from the side of the page representing the bubblegum. I considered filming the balloon as it actually exploded and taking a frame from the film, but I like the pristeeness of the whole balloon, bit like the clarity or death.

LOL I do like this spread, and how you have used the balloon in place of what you had before... I know when I first saw the spread I could not see what you had changed (from the thumb nails) but on opening it up it all becomes clear.

I must admit I would have loved to have seen the balloon on the point of popping, whether you would be able to capture it properly would be interesting, but as it stand's it resembles the point at which it will pop. Giving the reader too much might have been spoon-feeding them too much, letting their imagination fill in the gaps works well. People have a brain and imagination, we don’t always need to give them all the answers, just the possibilities of being able to find them on there own.

Like I said before pink isn't really my colour (bar hair, but don’t go there lol), but I really think this page is fun and colourful... a happy place, a place where you would least expect to find the harsher realities of the world.

LOL, depends on how the pink hair is done... saw one person who had pink hair, blond highlights and pink eye brows... sounds odd but worked so well.

Black and red works but black and pink unsure of lol, though i do have a friend that does alot of black and pink (even has pink shoelaces in her trainers and a set of pink new rocks... still unsure on them myself LOL. Its suits some people not others. I.e. you will never see me in pink lol.

This is much much better in every sense.
panel design with the abstract shapes is great, very good use of the technique. The type is working beautifully, although I'm still quite interested in the text that you have on them, so load up larger versions of them someday so I can read!

I could also see your idea of the exploding balloon on the page, that would have been cool as well, but this wholeness works much better as the idea.

Well done

thx for your wonderful comments i'll upload the text when I have time, I'll put it in with this explanation, you'll piss yourself laughing at some of them, you really cant help but laugh. Though, it does bring home the fact that when your times up, thats it, no point arguing.
