Starting something new, I give you the first map in a new map/AH series: A Hen Watching the Wolf Pack. Partly inspired by the Leviathan series of alternate history novels, it is a post-1900 timeline that follows the exploits of a France that is determined not to be left in the dust on the world stage. Here is a map before the First Great War between the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente.

The day is December 25, and the year 1913. Christmas Day has dawned across Europe as millions wake from their beds to behold snowy mornings full of presents and warm food. For now, Europe is at rest, despite the recent troubles in the Balkans and the failed Young Turk Uprising 5 years before in Turkey. War looms on the horizon between the mighty Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy against the powerful Triple Entente of France, Britain, and Russia with their vast empires behind them. It is a war that is, for sure, to be terrible, but Europeans by and large have other matters on their minds and pay little attention to the dire news that surrounds them.

In France, the citizens are confident in their politicians, their army, and the spirit of their soldiers to protect them from any incursion, and Britain boasts that its economic policies and world trade have made war all but impossible. Indeed, Britain could almost be called as isolationist as the United States, who lazily slumbers across the sea. In Germany, the confidence is still in peace, but more of the citizens and politicians grow agitated for war. With Russia's modernization program moving ahead of schedule due to a much friendlier sultan in Turkey, it is feared that if war does not come soon, Russia will be impossible to defeat. Meanwhile, in Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand and Franz Joseph butt heads over how the nation should be ruled and whether or not they should serve as Germany's lapdogs.

Christmas 1913 is a day of peace and goodwill, but it will be, alas, the last Christmas in a world without wars that span across the globe, wars that will engulf entire generations of men in the years to come. Few men, on this day, could have imagined that they may not live to see the next Christmas, or even the next fall, when war would come at last to Europe.

The only hope that Europe will have, once the great conflict begins, is for the victor to establish itself so firmly that a war as vast and terrible as the one about to explode into being will be the last of them. Unfortunately, wars and men do so rarely change.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War!

This war marked the beginning of the decline of imperialism and colonialism; some people viewed this as the perfect opportunity to regain independence, thus they supported whoever promised to give them that.
At the same time, minorities living in the collapsing empires could no longer be silenced by force, in fact, it made everything worse for the rulers!
Thus when this war finally ended after 4 bloody years in trenches and on the battlefield, most people regained freedom as a result of the peace treaties. The costs and length of the Great War were the highest at that time, but in the end all multiethnic authoritarian empires of Europe collapsed and were replaced with new democracies that would later find the new status quo of Europe difficult!

Awesome map! A question though: why is Serbia spelled "Servia"?

Because back around the time the map is set in, 1914, the English-speaking word spelled Serbia as "Servia" same with how they spelled Romania as "Roumania" or "Rumania".

Alright! I didn't know that. Thank you for explaining! It's a good thing, it adds a slight touch to immersion

Very eloquent my friend, but is this meant to celebrate or
condemn the 100th anniversary of the great war?

Well, I actually kind of forgot about the whole 100th anniversary thing, but if you want to read into it, I would say neither. World War I was a war that saw equal amounts of carnage and bravery, or heroics and death. The choices that were made then created the world we live in today, and I prefer to look at it in that way, as simply a part of history that I am thankful to have not been a part of.

Well we Canadians take pride in how we established ourselves
as a nation and not a measly colony in the battles of Vimy Ridge,
Paschendale, and Somme.

Which I am aware of, of course. I simply speak as an observer of both sides that played in the war, rather than be partial to one nation or one alliance. Though the map, naturally, favours France as it is a France-focused map series.

True enough.
But for me the greatest irony lies in the fact that both world wars were about preventing
germany from dominating Europe, yet today they have the strongest economy out of all the EU nations

this War has nothing great .. only a mixture of blood, mud and steel. I just would have called it WWI .
Alltrough great map... ( well besidethe litle Detail with Strasboug )   .. also interesting, didn't knew Georgia was a part of Russia that time

Well, it was called The Great War for quite a long time during and after the conflict, so I'm not exactly original. And yes, Georgia was part of Russia since the late 19th century until the end of World War I, then part of the USSR from the 1920s until 1991.

A very pretty map. I'll go ahead and admit that, since the map is currently of OTL pre-Great War conditions (visually speaking), my favorite part is the description. With the majority of DA cartographers being from other parts of the world, but still typing their descriptions in English, it is refreshing to read a scenario that is both aesthetically and logically pleasing. All to often the descriptions are just to hard to read due to the fact that the writer lacks the knowledge and experience required to master the English language. Thank you.

Well I do hope that my descriptions are up to par, seeing as mapmaking is a side hobby while I currently work toward my degree in English Education. Glad you enjoyed the description, however. I usually have to edit them down a bit as I tend to ramble.

Its just that I'm so used to the constant grammar errors of German DA members, so stumbling across a description which is melodious to the ears is a pleasant surprise.

Too bad Italy was silly and naive enough to betray Central Powers. A-H agreed with plebiscite in italian-speaking areas, and from defeated France, they could get Savoy and Corsica

They could expect that words of English gentlemen has no real value

It's on the map, right next to Nancy. You need to use the Download option to see it, though.

Huh, well that's where the basemap put it. I suppose the basemap was just wrong, then. Or wanted to make it seem like they were closer together to make the Franco-German rivalry seem more intense.
