Description A piece I did for my agent when she requested religious art for a younger market. I tried to keep Eve ambiguously ethnic, although she turned out looking like a 13 year old Hawaiian (not that that's a bad thing).

Note that the animals in the background are a unicorn, with the body of a mesohippus--[link] -- and a miacid. [link] I wanted to add some animals with prehistoric/fantastic flavor, since most Garden of Eden pics are depressingly literal. (This is what I'm trying to avoid-- [link] . Sheesh!)

That's utterly stunning ❀️😍
I hope someday I'm able to come up with pieces of that level of detail and sophistication ❀️❀️❀️✏

Ah, thank you! I painted this in my Moleskine sketchbook. I always try to carry a sketchbook with me, if I ever get any ideas.Β

neato! pretty sweet, I've tried to illustrate in the Garden of Eden without Adam and Eve being naked which is tough XD, this looks nice.

Yes, it is tough, isn't it? I had to give some thought to come up with something appropriately G-rated. But I think it worked out pretty well, all in all...

Thanks, I'm glad you like it

I don't know what else to say except I like it. But you already knew that. I like all your stuff.

Well, it's not the most original idea... I've seen religious paintings before showing unicorns in the Garden of Eden (I used to be a big unicorn fan when I was a kid), but my twist on it was to make it a mesohippus.

Anyway, I'm glad you like it. Thanks!

(I saw your other links in other comments too )

But this is is beautiful. I love your idea of a mesohipic unicorn. I'm fond of those fusions between myth and reality...

Thank you! I was quite pleased with my prehistoric unicorn.

Have you ever done anything biblical in theme?

Oh, let's see... The nativity, perhaps? Though not published.

I'm sure it's beautiful. Had you any thoughts of posting it soon?

Himmapaan In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2008-07-09 00:59:10 +0000 UTC]

Um... Possibly at some point, if you insist. It's a large, unfinished drawing I began a few years ago which is rather too big for even my newly acquired A3 scanner (see latest journal entry ). But it is rather interesting, so perhaps I may. However, there is a Christmas card I did which has a much smaller treatment of the scene which I DO intend to post.

Well, for my larger artwork, I scan it in sections and piece them together in Photoshop, usually airbrushing out the seams with the stamp tool. Yes, it's as big as a pain in the ass as it sounds. But sometimes it's worth it: "Tangerine" here- [link] - was HUGE, and I had to scan it in 10 sections. Good times!

I don't paint that large anymore, but sometimes I still have to do larger paintings for a client.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your versions of the Nativity! I expect authentic first century Judaean costume from you, of course.

Himmapaan In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2008-07-09 11:30:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh, my, that's beautiful! Ten sections?
Alas, I know absolutely nothing about stitching sections of images together digitally (or digital, full stop/period. Technophobe, as you know )... Just as well I don't usually do large pieces...

Haha! I'm afraid you will be disappointed then.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

suburbanbeatnik In reply to Himmapaan [2008-07-09 11:53:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was 10 sections. The tedium of piecing "Tangerine" together is best left undescribed. But I can look at it and admire it, and put the digital process well out of my mind...

Do you have Photoshop on your computer, out of curiosity? It's a good program to have...

Okay, I'll keep in mind that you probably haven't been studying first century costume as long as I have. But just tell me that Joseph isn't wearing a kaffiyeh... (That's the traditional Arab headdress worn by Yasser Arafat and Lawrence of Arabia. [link] That particular style didn't become prevalent until the middle ages.) I can't tell you how annoyed I get when I see bible movies dress 1rst century Jews like contemporary Palestinians...

Oh, no, he isn't.

In fact, mine has tended towards the medieval and Renaissance depictions (no surprises there ) - with a few surprises thrown in, but that's for the big unfinished one. In the small Christmas card one (illustrated with silhouettes), that's different altogether.

suburbanbeatnik In reply to Himmapaan [2008-07-09 12:23:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm curious now- what are they wearing in the Christmas card?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Himmapaan In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2008-07-09 14:31:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, nothing extraordinary. Just some indeterminate kind of period clothes. I thought it suited the timelessness well, whilst looking obviously as though it wasn't modern day. That's the Holy Family though. The other figures are in things from all different periods. I'll be uploading that in a few days for sure, so you'll see (Squee, scanner! )

As for the big unfinished one now... In fact, I'll link you to my LJ post for that one. It was photographed, so you'll have to forgive its woeful quality. [link]

Thank you so much! I may post that one up here at some point. It had to be scanned in halves and stitched together (the horror), but I asked *slightlytriangle to do that for me.

And I don't mind at all. I've taken a break from there too for a long while, in fact, so there haven't been any updates recently...

wow this is something different and still (of course) very nice and all your style, I like!
I just finished half a year of Christian Iconograpy, and indeed (and of course, can't avoid it in medieval art) it looks all the same I like your interpretation very much and iconographically speaken it's still excellently recognizable so wouldn't look bad in a bible ^^

She's very pretty- I think it's a cool piece and not like SHAAAZZZZAAAAAM RELIGION, which is nice because it kind of balances things and lets people who aren't religious not feel struck in the head with a religious rock, ahaha.

It's kind of horrifying, isn't it? Sarah at the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog had this take on it: [link] Because the whole "nubile whiteys makin' it in a swamp" is so very 1980s romance novel-ly, it ain't funny...

It does make sense for Eve to be a really young teenager, doesn't it? I'd never really thought about it before, but I think it's more logical than making her some twenty-thirtysomething woman like here, where she's an Ute Lemper type blonde: [link]
