Description This is Julia Verrucia, the heroine from a novel set in first century Rome that I wrote in high school. I've drawn her a lot, but this time I spent more time on folds and drape of the tunic, which definitely has something of a a "come hither" look to it. (Personally, I always get annoyed when people put Greek or Roman women in fitted dresses with décolleté; sexiness wasn't approached that way back then. Filmy- often gauzy- fabrics were used to reveal the body, not immense amounts of cleavage.)

It really does kind of fit, though I don't think Herrick was imagining 1rst century Roman/Hellenistic woman's dress.

The details are great. I particularly love her face - she certainly has the Roman/classically beautiful look. Nice work on the stola/drapery, too.

I saw a link to Judith and Holofernes down there in another comment... I MUST check out your gallery!

Thank you! Although I don't think what she's wearing is technically a stola-- to the best of my understanding, a stola was a formal overtunic with shoulder straps. She's wearing an undertunic-- hubba hubba!

What did you think of my Judith and Holofernes pics?

I'd forgotten entirely about the semi-transparent look much classical clothing had to it... that's definitely a different way of showing off the body, as you said. Very nicely done, no matter what it's called!

I liked the one I saw! It's a neat interpretation. I'm sure you've seen Caravaggio and Gentileschi's interpretations as well? Now that I've seen multiple versions of the story, it's nice to see a pencil take that's a little more straightforward.

Thanks!

To be honest, I'm not crazy about Gentileschi's work (her women look kind of weird to me), and while Caravaggio is fine he's not really to my taste. My favorite take on the Judith story is from the symbolist school, like Klimt, Moreau and Von Stuck.

Have you seen Von Stuck's Judith paintings? He was really into her as a subject.

They have a great primitive energy to them. I also have a weakness for guys who can paint hot evil women (and the men entrapped in their snares)!

Wow, the second painting you linked is neat. I'm not a fan of the first. When it comes to art I have to study, or art that has entered the canon, I suppose, I'm all for realistic work (like Caravaggio or Gentileschi). My whole life I've been practically crusading against art that doesn't have any semblance of realism - not to say it's not legitimate, it's just not my thing. It's interesting to look at those after having seen so many other interpretations.

Thanks for sharing!

No problem! Different strokes for different folks, as they say. I'm not crazy about Caravaggio, but I'm sure other artists (like von Stuck) that I really dig aren't the cup of tea of other people.

I love the drapery and the attention to historical sexiness. I mean beauty. She's absolutely gorgeous, she is, and with all her jewelery and everything, it flows together really nicely.

She looks beautiful to put it bluntly. I like the detail, I for one don't have the patience most of the time, I can't get myself to just stay still and add every detail. But the look in her face fascinates me.

You really are a master at making historical fashion look so beautiful and seducing!

I love all the little curls of the fabric, it's just amazing!

I would love to know more about this character. She is after all the woman who manages to make your male character succumbto her charms. But looking at her it really can't surprise enyone that she will be able to turn the heads of many men, even the more stern ones!

Thanks! As you probably know, if the sterotypical hero of a Roman novel is a butch guy named Marcus, the sterotypical heroine is a virtuous but feisty Christian maiden. I thought it would cool to have a sexy heroine who's been around the block a few times, in contrast to the more straitlaced hero. Glad you like the pic!

Where do you get resources for figure/fabric studies?

I haven't uploaded anything new up yet. Too much business related stuff to do... I must say I'm impressed by your fanhood you have on here

Hey, thanks! But compared to some established dA people, my fandom is yet a fledgling thing.... but then I've only been on for three weeks or so.

As for fabric studies, I googled a lot of old statues, like this one right here... [link] I remember, back in the old days, when I would have to go to the library and look at books! Man, I sure love the internets!

Thank you! I'm so used to drawing corsets and fitted clothes, it was a good challenge to make myself do the classical thing and draw the draped figure.
