Welcome my friends to Enemy Files, where I try to expand the lore of the well known and sometimes forgotten Video game creatures that went unexplored. This entry’s subject, the Flame Chomps.

Flame Chomps are a sub-species of Chain Chomps that are first seen in the game Super Mario Bros. 3. Flame Chomps are usually found in area where they have enough room to fly around and hover due to their light weight.

The biology of the species seems to consist of a weird body plan of a black round sphere with two white eyes and a mouth with sharp teeth, which is emphasized to be how they chew their food so they can digest it. Flame Chomps usually hunt in packs and are armed with a trail of fiery wisps that they use to burn their prey to a crisp before they can eat the charred remains in order to gain energy to produce the fire that follows behind them. When a Flame Chomp uses up its own trail, it either has to hunt for more food to eat in order to stock up on more flame trails or sacrifice itself by blowing up their bodies at their attackers. Many Flame Chomps have met this fate. To reproduce, Flame Chomps build their nest on lava pools as the females dip into the lava where they will fill themselves with the lava and then fly back to their next to regurgitate a metal pod which will hatch into the newborn Flame Chomps.

Life for a Flame Chomp is always a cycle of sacrifice, so they only leave the nest on hunting seasons in the early-summer to avoid mere extinction and hibernate during the rainy days and in the fall and winter. They do so by digging themselves into the ground and forge hibernation holes to keep themselves warm during hibernation.
