Its a spell from Harry Potter
It is the third of the Three Unforgivable Curses.
Avada Kederva is "The Killing Curse" a spell intended to instantly kill whoever it hits.

I have to admit that I haven't read the books, and I've only seen 2 Harry Potter movies: The one with the griffon in it, and the two part final.

I don't remember that spell being used in either movie, but I do remember one that he used as a kind of light repelling thing(Expecto Petronum).

In the context of our dear friend Queen Chrysalis, yeah, if she used it to kill Celestia, we'd probably be looking at a totally different Equestria right now.

it wasn't used in either of those. The one with the Griffon was "
The Prisoner of Azkaban" which also had the Petronus charm. Avada Kerdavra was mentioned in the first one though only as "voldemort tried to kill you"
In "Harry potter and the goblet of fire" We actually see Wormtail use the spell, then Voldermort use it when he forces Harry to duel him. Its also used by "Mad eye Moody" when he is explaining the curses.

btw there was no griffon; a griffon is part lion and part eagle, in the prisoner of azkaban, Harry rides a hippogriff which is half horse, half eagle
